The Mclaughlin Daughters
Parkwood National Historic Site The McLaughlin Daughters Over the course of their lifetime together Sam and Adelaide had the pleasure and good fortune to raise five daughters. Please meet their children – Eileen, Mildred, Isabel, Hilda and Eleanor (affectionately called Billie) Eileen (born Mary Eileen) was born in 1898 and was an avid golfer, equestrian champion and dog lover. Her horse equestrian skills saw Eileen compete throughout Canada and the United States, including at the Chicago World’s Fair. Between 1924 and 1933, Eileen participated in sixty-five exhibitions and competitions. During her first marriage (1918 to 1945) Eileen and her family resided at Adelaide House, now used as the YWCA Durham, in Oshawa. During and after her second marriage, Eileen spent most of the year at her home in British Columbia, raising “Scottie dogs”. Mildred was born in 1900 and through her late teens and early twenties, Mildred attended many teas, dances, art exhibitions, theatre performances, etc. Mildred also enjoyed throwing lavish parties and performances at Parkwood. Together with her first husband, Cord Taylor they moved to the United States in the mid -1920s. Raising her family in America, Mildred returned to Parkwood for numerous visits, especially with her young children. After her second marriage, Mildred, spent her final days in Coral Gables, Florida. Hodgson* Université du Québec à Montréal Sociologists, psychologists and economists have studied many aspects of the effects on human creativity, especially that of artists, of the social setting in which creative activity takes place. In the last hundred and fifty years or so, the field of advanced creation in visual art has been heavily characterized by the existence of artistic movements, small groupings of artists having aesthetic or programmatic similarities and using the group to further their collective programme, and, one would suppose, their individual careers and creative trajectories. -

PEOPLE PROGRESS OUTREACH SERVICE Annual Report 2016 The Alpine Club of Canada | Le Club Alpin du Canada Message from the President With the 2016 fiscal year behind us, it is time to celebrate our Club’s progress and milestones. I invite you to read these pages and reflect on our proud achievements. It is also a time to look to the future. For me, that means putting more boots in the mountains and growing our members’ pride in being part of this amazing organization. Many of our members join for the Club’s great range of activities. They soon learn the ACC provides so much more—a sense of history and shared passion for mountain culture, responsible access and preserving the environment. How can we continue to do better for our members? I believe it starts with enhancing connections with our Sections. In October, I had my first official meeting with our Section leaders in Lake Louise. It marked the initial step in a process of reaching out to determine their highest priorities so we can develop an effective nationwide strategy. In 2017, we will conduct a survey of all members, building on last year’s survey of Sections, asking you about your club experiences and expectations, for your ideas and input. There is a lot to be done, but with so many sensational volunteers committing their time, energy and support to projects across the country, our organization is uniquely positioned to thrive. It has been completely humbling to have been elected your President for the next three years. I will undoubtedly make mistakes. -

Canadian Magazine Illustrators at Home and in the United States, 1880-1960 by Shannon Jaleen Grove Doctor of Philosophy in Art History and Criticism Stony Brook University 2014 This dissertation analyzes nationalisms in the work of Canadian magazine illustrators in Toronto and New York, 1880 to 1960. Using a continentalist approach—rather than the nationalist lens often employed by historians of Canadian art—I show the existence of an integrated, joint North American visual culture. Drawing from primary sources and biography, I document the social, political, corporate, and communication networks that illustrators traded in. I focus on two common visual tropes of the day—that of the pretty girl and that of wilderness imagery. -

PHOTO BY COURTESY MCMICHAEL CANADIAN ART COLLECTION As this summer began, the Twitter account @CanadaPaintings got hundreds of “likes” when it posted In The Woods, a 1939 painting by Paraskeva Clark, who came to Canada from Russia via Paris in the early 1930s, and who was unusually famous for a 20th-century Canadian woman artist. The painting does exactly what it says on the tin. A keen eye might pick out the influence of Paul Cézanne, but to the casual viewer, it shows the view from behind a rock into a bunch of trees. As a work of art, it is as Canadian as possible under the circumstances, and there is a subtle irony in the fact it is by a woman. Canada is artistically “metrophobic,” says Sarah Milroy, chief curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, which has a lot of paintings set in the woods. Canadians do not think of themselves as an urban nation, although they mostly are, and Canadian fine art has perpetuated this distortion. The received wisdom is that Canadian art is about wilderness, and Canadian artists are basically lumberjacks, epitomized in the all-male Group of Seven, the standard against which all else is judged. -

John Weinzweig and the Canadian Mediascape, 1941-1948 by Erin Elizabeth Scheffer A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Erin Elizabeth Scheffer 2019 John Weinzweig and the Canadian Mediascape Erin Elizabeth Scheffer Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto 2019 Abstract This dissertation explores John Weinzweig’s incidental music for radio and film and its context in Canadian cultural life. Between 1941 and 1948, Weinzweig composed music for nearly one hundred CBC radio docudrama episodes and for four National Film Board documentaries. Weinzweig’s time at the CBC and NFB was his first large scale success as a working composer, following his graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. Weinzweig’s incidental music was publicly broadcast across Canada, and can be interpreted in light of how it represents Canada during an anxious and difficult yet significant time in the nation’s history through the Second World War and the immediate post-war era. These works, featuring new music broadcast by organizations in their infancy, helped to shape audience perceptions of a rapidly changing country. I begin by situating Weinzweig’s documentary music both temporally and philosophically. The opening chapter explores his biography, the musical context of the 1940s in Canada, and the creation of the CBC and NFB, and it closes by discussing significant themes in the works: indigeneity, northernness, dominion over the landscape, and nation and national affect. The subsequent three chapters divide Weinzweig’s docudramas and documentaries by topic: World War Two propaganda and postwar reconstruction, Canada’s north, and finally a discussion of Weinzweig’s only radio drama The Great Flood , which premiered on CBC’s ii cultural program Wednesday Night in 1948. -
