Challenging hip-hop historiographers that narrate the movement as the materialization of a “phantom aesthetic”, or a sociological, cultural, technological, and musical innovation of the last forty years, this dissertation asserts that hip-hop artists deploy distinctly literary techniques in their attempts to animate, write, rewrite, rupture, or reclaim the past for the present. Through an analysis of 20th and 21st century African-American literary engagements with black music, musical figures, scenes of musical performance, and what I call ‘musical-oral’, I hope to demonstrate how prose representations of music disrupt the linear narratives of

1 m a p s • v o l u m e X I n u m b e r 1 • s p r i n g 2 0 0 1 Bulletin of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies “A Tidal Wave of Ecstasy!” On March 21, 2001, this evocative phrase washed over me as I watched C-SPAN for all three hours of a U.S. Senate hearing on “The Use of the Drug Ecstasy.” I imagined a gentle tidal wave of warm, wet water, with myself tumbling over and over joyously in the midst of it, finally landing, laughing and unbruised, in the arms of a lifeguard on a sunny, sandy beach. Unfortunately, the tidal wave of ecstasy carried totally different connotations for the Senators. In the fall of 2000, Congress had passed a bill asking the U.S. Sentencing Commission to recommend an increase in the penalties for MDMA. Two days before the Senate hearing, several MDMA researchers, drug policy activists and I had fruitlessly testified before the Sentencing Commission about MDMA’s risks and benefits, opposing the increase in penalties on scientific grounds (http://www.maps.org/news). The day before the Senate hearing, the Commission announced its decision. Dose for dose, Ecstasy would now be more heavily punished than heroin! In testimony presented to the Senators, ecstasy was linked with poison, abuse, death, brain damage, addiction, violence, damage to dopamine and serotonin brain cells, rotting flesh falling off the side of a user’s face, holes in the brain, a high school cheerleader unable to make it to practice since she was in thrall to ecstasy and would “lie, cheat and steal” to buy more, and a generation of young people who thought MDMA was harmless even as it insidiously robbed them of their mental abilities and moral sensibilities.

  • DJ Krush Toshinori Kondo Ki Oku Album Download Ki-Oku
DJ Krush Toshinori Kondo ki oku album download Ki-Oku. Anyone who remembers trumpeter Toshinori Kondo's work with such thorny avant-gardists as John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, and Peter Brotzmann's Die Like a Dog Quartet may be a bit taken aback by the extreme accessibility of his collaboration with pioneering turntablist DJ Krush. Much of the music on Ki-Oku flirts with smooth-groove jazz -- Kondo's muted trumpet line on "Mu-Getsu" sounds an awful lot like something Chris Botti would play, while the duo's instrumental take on the Bob Marley classic "Sun Is Shining" comes off just a little bit muzak-y. On the other hand, "Ki-Gen" and "Ko-Ku" both find Kondo using synthesized treatments in a way that evokes Jon Hassell's work with Brian Eno, while on the latter DJ Krush layers slightly menacing keyboard washes beneath Kondo's unassuming trumpet lines. This is one of those albums that reveals more with repeated listens; if it sounds too easy at first, listen again -- there's lots of interesting stuff going on beneath what sometimes sounds like a merely pleasant surface. DJ Krush Toshinori Kondo ki oku album download. "Pairing DJ Krush, known throughout the beat underground for his subdued, trippy soundscapes, with Japanese avant trumpeter Toshinori Kondo may seem an odd pairing. This record, however, is instantly knowable and intuitively easy to grasp. DJ Krush is not only able to drive the direction and tempo, but he's also quite adept at creating mood--often mixing up somber, downtempo collages that glide with an underwater grace.

ABSTRACT: The practice of appropriating a sign, icon or trope with an already-established meaning and investing it with a new meaning to produce a sign that retains both original and revised meanings is one example of what scholar Henry Louis Gates calls ―Signifyin(g)‖. I argue herein that musician George Clinton and his band P-Funk encode a subversive political program and a philosophy of life – a radically hybrid vision of cosmic liberation which I will call ―heteroglossic utopia‖ – in their music, lyrics, visual iconography, stage performances and indeed their entire underlying social formation through the practice of Signifyin(g).
