2019 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - OCT. 7

Gardner-Webb ................................. Marc Rabb

[email protected]
704-406-4355

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - JAYLN CAGLE, GARDNER-WEBB, RB, SR (KANNAPOLIS, N.C.)

Cagle rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Gardner-Webb’s 24-21 victory at Western Carolina. Eight of his carries resulted in first downs -- including a 14-yard gain on 3rd-and-13 that set up GWU’s game-winning field goal attempt. Cagle’s first score was a 46-yard sprint that evened the game at 7-7, and he tied the game a second time with a 2-yard plunge in the second quarter.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - BREVIN ALLEN, CAMPBELL, DL, SOPH (GREENSBORO, N.C.)

Allen finished with eight tackles (three solo, five assisted), plus 3.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack and a quarterback hurry in the Camels’ 28-14 Big South-opening win over Presbyterian. His quarterback pressure forced an interception on the play, four of his stops forced third downs, another two forced fourth downs, and a fifth was on a 4th-and-7 situation that resulted in a turnover on downs.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK - KURT EVERETT, GARDNER-WEBB, K, R-SOPH (MEDINA, OHIO)

Everett made all three PAT attempts in addition to the game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired to lift GardnerWebb to its first non-conference FCS road victory since 2016. The 33-yarder was a career-best distance, and he also posted a pair of touchbacks on his kickoffs.

Well, here you go. The national crisis is over. The annual post-Super Bowl football withdrawal, a seemingly incurable malady that impacts millions every year the second weekend in February and lasts weeks and months, is now in the past thanks to The Alliance of American Football, the creation of Charlie Ebersol, a television and film producer, and Bill Polian, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They have the football game plan, the business model with multiple big-money investors and a national television contract with CBS to succeed where other spring leagues have failed. The idea is not to compete with the National Football League. That’s a failed concept. The Alliance will complement the NFL and satisfy the insatiable appetite of football fans who otherwise would be suffering from a long period of depression.
