fter the Jayhawks faced one of the nation’s most difficult schedules in A 2008, they look ahead to face six more of the country’s top opponents in 2009. Head Coach Mark Mangino, who has led KU to four bowl games in a six-year span, is work- ing to lead the 2009 Jayhawks to yet another tremendous season. Coming off an Insight Bowl championship, Mangino enters his eighth season with 42 letter- men, including 18 starters. Among those starters is one of the country’s best , , Kerry Meier, running back Jake Sharp and seven defensive starters led by First Team All-Big 12 safety, Darrell Stuckey. The valuable experience and skill of the 2009 Kansas Jayhawks should position this year’s team to emerge as one of the nation’s best. Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium

ansas will initiate its 89th season of foot- ball at Memorial Stadium this fall with Kan overall home record of 235-208-16. The first stadium built on a college campus west of the Mississippi River, historic Memorial Stadium is the seventh-oldest collegiate stadium in the nation. Located at the north base of Mt. Oread at 11th and Maine streets in Lawrence, it has a capacity of 50,071. In recent years the stadium complex has been the focus of major renovations, with more than $30 million in improvements com- pleted. Memorial Stadium is dedicated to the students who fought and died in World War I. The playing field was named in 2006 to honor KU alumnus Tom Kivisto, his wife Julie and their family for their generosity to Kansas Athletics in general and to KU football in particular.

Facilities

Anderson Family Football Complex

he Anderson Family Football Complex is the newest addition to our Kansas Football program. The football complex, completed in the Summer of 2008, is adjacent to Memorial Stadium Tnext to the southwest corner of the stadium. The building includes offices, academic areas, a weight room, locker rooms, an audio-visual room, meeting rooms, a cardio room, a hydro-therapy room, a nutrition area and a display area. The 80,000 square-foot football facility is the state-of-the-art centerpiece of a $31 million football complex project, which also includes two new practice fields and additional parking. The football facility consists of two levels, with only the upper level above ground. The lower, underground level houses the football training area, locker rooms and related facilities. The upper level houses athletics administrative offices and support services. The two 100-yard practice fields are located southeast of the stadium, between it and the Kansas Union. Funding for this project was provided largely through the generosity of two University of Kansas alumni families — the Kivistos (former basketball team captain Tom Kivisto and his wife Julie), and the Andersons (Dana, Sue, Justin and Jean) — as well as several other families, including Charles and Sharon Lynch Kimbell (Hutchinson, Kan.), Frank Sabatini and family (Topeka, Kan.), and Ken Wagnon (Wichita, Kan.). The entire Kansas Athletics family is indebted to these families for their generosity, and to all those who donated to this project. This facility better positions KU Football to compete with national pow- ers in the Big 12 Conference and around the country. Also, by consolidating all football activities into one area, other sports benefit as well.
