Recreation, Sport and the Arts
374 Chapter 19 Recreation, Sport and the Arts Hong Kong people are hard working by nature but they also know how to relax and enjoy themselves through many different sports, cultural and recreational activities. A growing array of programmes and facilities enables people of all ages and abilities to participate and improve their quality of life. Government policies on matters concerning sports, recreation, culture and heritage are co-ordinated by the Home Affairs Bureau. Organisations that help to draw up these policies include the Sports Commission, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Antiquities Advisory Board. The Hong Kong Sports Institute Limited helps develop sports in Hong Kong with special emphasis on training athletes for high performance sports, while in January 2005 the Government established the Sports Commission to advise on all matters related to sports development. The commission oversees the Elite Sports, the Major Sports Events, and the Community Sports Committees which give advice on different aspects of sporting activities. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), an executive arm of the Home Affairs Bureau, provides the community with services to preserve its cultural heritage, enhance its physical environment, and foster co-operative interaction between sports, cultural and community organisations. During 2009, the LCSD organised several large-scale exhibitions, some of which were in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China. It also organised cultural performances, ranging from music and dance to opera and sporting events. The LCSD co-ordinates the provision of high quality recreational and sports facilities and supports and organises training programmes and activities to promote community sports, identify sporting talent and raise sporting standards. -
Over 100 Opera Makers
#OPERAHARMONY CREATING OPERAS IN ISOLATION 1 3 WELCOME TO #OPERA HARMONY FROM FOUNDER – ELLA MARCHMENT Welcome to #OperaHarmony. #Opera Harmony is a collection of opera makers from across the world who, during this time of crisis, formed an online community to create new operas. I started this initiative when the show that I was rehearsing at Dutch National Opera was cancelled because of the lockdown. Using social media and online platforms I invited colleagues worldwide to join me in the immense technical and logistical challenge of creating new works online. I set the themes of ‘distance’ and ‘community’, organised artist teams, and since March have been overseeing the creation of twenty new operas. All the artists involved in #OperaHarmony are highly skilled professionals who typically apply their talents in creating live theatre performances. Through this project, they have had to adapt to working in a new medium, as well as embracing new technologies and novel ways of creating, producing, and sharing work. #OperaHarmony’s goal was to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable prior to Covid-19. Over 100 artists from all the opera disciplines have collaborated to write, stage, record, and produce the new operas. The pieces encapsulate an incredibly dark period for the arts, and they are a symbol of the unstoppable determination, and community that exists to perform and continue to create operatic works. This has been my saving grace throughout lockdown, and it has given all involved a sense of purpose. When we started building these works we had no idea how they would eventually be realised, and it is with great thanks that we acknowledge the support of Opera Vision in helping to both distribute and disseminate these pieces, and also for establishing a means in which audiences can be invited into the heart of the process too . -

Press Release The 2018/2019 Season of the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier Hamburg, March 27, 2018 - Georges Delnon, Artistic Director of the Hamburg State Opera, and Professor John Neumeier, Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet, presented the 2018/2019 season of the Hamburg State Opera at today’s press conference. The Hamburg State Opera opens the fourth season under the artistic directorship of Georges Delnon on September 8, 2018 with Mozart’s Così fan tutte in a new production by Herbert Fritsch conducted by Sébastien Rouland. “During our fourth season, we continue our aesthetic line, examine great, important works of opera literature and create new musical theatre works. As we are intent on continuity, this season will be marked by the explicit desire to give the artistic profile of our theatre an unmistakable outline and notable sharpening. We renew our encounter with the theatrical magician Achim Freyer, who directs Robert Schumann’s fragment Szenen aus Goethes Faust. John Neumeier presents his perspective of Gluck’s opera Orphée et Eurydice. We look forward eagerly to the world premiere of Lessons in Love and Violence – the new opera by George Benjamin, directed by Katie Mitchell and keenly anticipated on the international opera scene. The Italian Opera Weeks, a format we successfully established last season, will be continued. For its opening, the Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov will present a new staged interpretation of Verdi’s liberation opera Nabucco,” thus Artistic Director Georges Delnon describes the programmatic design of the 2018/2019 season. For his 46th season at the helm of the Hamburg Ballet, John Neumeier has put together a personally meaningful programme. -
