Saturday, 18 February 2017, SGVR Membership Breakfast Meeting

The breakfast meeting’s the same time as always, 9:00 AM, the same Third Saturday of the Month as always, at the new same place as always:

Mimi’s Café click here for a map. 500 W. Huntington Drive Monrovia, CA 91016

Come on out and enjoy a hearty breakfast with your Porsche friends. Catch up on a little news and maybe even win a prize! We’ll have two special menus—the Café Breakfast—where everything’s ~$ 17.00 and the Bistro Breakfast menu—where everything’s ~$ 18.00. We’ll have separate checks.

One lucky person attending the breakfast will win a free meal at our next quarterly dinner!

January 2017 Trivia Question Winner Joe Beerer won a free quarterly dinner by “knowing” that one of the Porsche 919’s energy recovery systems was a motor-generator on the front axle. To be more precise, previous incorrect answers had established that one of the Porsche 919’s energy recovery systems was a motor-generator on an axle that was not the rear axle so what Joe knew was that front axle was the axle that was not the rear axle. You had to be there.

sgvr.pca.org 5 of 45 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 31 January 2017

Greg Hwang of House Automotive donated a second free meal at a quarterly dinner and Zone 8 Representative emeritus Mike Dolphin held the winning ticket.

Saturday, 15 April 2017, After Breakfast Tour to Mt. Baldy

After the April Monthly Breakfast Meeting at Mimi’s, join your Porsche friends on a scenic drive through Azusa Canyon, Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road to Lunch at Mt. Baldy Lodge for good food, friendly service, and an atmosphere like you’re a thousand miles from LA.

POSTPONED: Special Destination Breakfast at Newcomb’s Ranch

This had been planned for Saturday, 21 May 2017, but that’s the day before our Concours d’Élégance. Sometime AFTER the May Membership Breakfast Meeting we’ll have a special destination breakfast meeting: we’ll head up Angles Crest to breakfast at Newcomb’s Ranch. We’ll have details on the timing and starting point soon.

From the Planning Meeting

A number of ideas came up at the planning meeting on Saturday, 5 November 2016, including (but not limited to):

Open Houses--Visits • Tour of Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood, probably in February to see—among other things—the 356SL that took Porsche’s 1st class win at Le Mans in 19512 • Nethercutt Museum • Norton Simon/Rusnak • Getty Museum/Getty Villa • Griffith Observatory • USS Midway, San Diego • USS Iowa, San Pedro • JPL • Automobile Driving Museum, El Segundo • Porsche Experience Center, Carson Driving Tours

• Mulholland (Mullin Museum?) • Poppy Fields (Spring) • San Diego • San Juan Capistrano via Ortega Highway • Reagan Library • Santa Paula Airport • Santa Ynez Winery • Taco Truck Tour—probably late Spring of 2017. • After Breakfast Meeting Tour to Mt. Baldy (15 April 2017) • A breakfast trip up Angeles Crest Highway to Newcomb’s Ranch instead of Mimi’s (after May 2017) • Big Bear-Oak Glen, probably 23 September 2017 • Overnight Tour to Monterey, possibly 30 September-1 October 2017 to go through Cholame on the anniversary of James Dean’s crash. • Tour of Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood—Grizzly Café (date and details TBD—could be after breakfast).

Dinners • Zone 8 Awards Banquet at the Queen Mary, 21 January 2016 • March: Walters/La Paloma/Sycamore Inn • June (41st Anniversary): Progressive Dinner

2 This is not just wishful thinking—Rod Emory has offered to host us. We just need to work out the logistics.

The bad news: the original engine’s gone but the seller claims to have most of the parts to build a correct engine (including the hard-to-find Solex carburetors). It’s missing a few other small items including the windshield washer bag (reservoir) and a radio antenna—both are much harder to find than you might think. FS: 1967 911S Soft Window Targa

Another offering at the early 911S Registry is this Targa which won 1st in class among long hoods, (1965 – 1973 Porsche 911s), at the 2016 Carmel Concours on the Avenue.. It’s asking price is $ 299,000. Porsche built just 483 911S Targas in 1967—the first year of the 911S and the Targa.. 2-6 March 2017, LitMeet Weekend

The Weekend LA becomes the Center of the Porsche Universe!

sgvr.pca.org 10 of 45 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 31 January 2017

For 2017, Stoddard has taken over the LitMeet from Prescott Kelley, Wayne Callaway, and Jim Perrin who built a little swap meet into one of the world’s most important Classic Porsche events. The website www.lalitandtoyshow.com has been live for some time. They can be contacted at [email protected].

Porsche and Vintage VW Literature, Toy/Model, & Memorabilia Swap Meet Yes, the full name is a mouthful. The centerpiece of LitMeet weekend will fill the ballrooms at the LAX Hilton: you need to spring for the “early bird” admission just to have time to see [almost] everything.

Years ago, there was table after table filled with old Porsche literature. You’d find a brochure or something you wanted then walk around looking to buy it at the best value. The literatures become rare now and the LitMeet has evolved into something of a trade show where you can meet the folks you’d normally deal with over the Internet.

Parking There may be a small discount on parking at the Hilton. The Hilton garage has ceilings too low for minivans or SUVs and it can fill up early. This is LAX so there’s lots of parking nearby.

So Cal All-Porsche Swap and Car Display There’s more of a traditional swap meet at the Phoenix Club as well as lots and lots of nice cars to ogle. You aren’t shuffling through crowded aisles so it’s easy to meet your Porsche friends. And! The Phoenix Club has excellent food and German beer.

There are now TWENTY3 Open Houses to choose from (see Related Events): People will come from all over the world. Nearly every one of those folks will see and be seen at Willhoit’s on Friday and European Collectibles on Saturday.

Sierra Madre Collection's first Warehouse Open House in 2016 also drew a big crowd—it’s Thursday.

Twofers • FRIDAY: Hunziker and Klasse 356 are in the same building, and Callas Rennsport is a couple blocks North. You can only turn into Callas Rennsport from the northbound side of Hawthorne Blvd—if parking’s full it can be hard to circle back. Consider parking in the lot South of Callas.

• SATURDAY: Jim Liberty & European Collectibles are on opposite sides of the street. California 4 Porsches is in-between and Carparc USA LLC is a short drive (and their open house starts earlier).

Hot Food • John Willhoit’s Open House • European Collectibles, Inc. 10th Annual “OPEN HOUSE”

3 And there are more that aren’t even listed on the Related Events webpage. 4 California Porsches is a small outfit and has never been listed in Related Events, but they figured out about the Porsche traffic.

San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 31 January 2017

• Sierra Madre Collection's Warehouse Open House • Auto Kennel’s Open House (pizza) • The Phoenix Club (excellent German fare if the dining room’s open—always good eats in the courtyard, not to mention German beer)

Upscale Food • Hunziker Open House (Heather Norwood serves the good stuff) • Callas Rennsport Open House (Corner Bakery)

Rare Cars • Pelican Parts Open House (Wayne Dempsey’s collection has several race cars: not hot rodded 914s either: 956 & 962 le Mans Racers) • Callas Rennsport Open House (911Rs5, Carrera GTs, 959s) • John Willhoit’s Open House (rare 356s) • European Collectibles, Inc. (Ferraris, Aston Martins, 300SLs, Spyders…)

356 Specialists • John Willhoit’s Open House • Klasse 356 • GTwerk/Bob Kann’s Open House (Outlaws) • Jim Liberty’s Open House6

Early 911 Specialists • TRE Motorsports • John Esposito Restorations • Carparc USA LLC

Panelbeater • Steve Hogue Enterprises Open House. Steve is one of those rare folks who takes sheet steel and turns it into cars.

Rocky & Bullwinkle and Adult Beverages • Jim Liberty’s Open House. Tiffany Liberty’s father Jay Ward created Rocky & Bullwinkle.

New for 2017 • Pelican Parts Open House • John Esposito Restorations

5 Porsche only built 25 911Rs and Tony often has two of them at his open house. 6 Jim Liberty is noted for “semi-outlaw” 356s, usually with optically perfect black paint and red leather. His “shop truck” is one of the most original custom VW transporters: a Binz double-cab with a 356 pre-A dashboard and Speedster seats. And yes, it has optically perfect black paint and red upholstery.

The busses will leave the LAX Hilton at 9:00 AM and return about 4:00 PM. Book tours at (440) 869-9890.

Mr. Newmark got the car as a gift when he graduated college. In October, the car’s odometer hit 1 million miles. JOSEPH PHILIPSON FOR THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

The Long-Awaited ‘Phil Hill Book’

After more than ten years of painstaking dedication, deliberation, preparation (and perspiration), the long-awaited ‘Phil Hill book’ – so long regarded as a mythical beast by classic car and motor racing enthusiasts worldwide – is at last poised for publication. Through all his racing up until 1962, Phil Hill used his favoured Leica cameras “… to show the folks back home” the motor racing scene he so loved. This long-private personal photo collection plus racing autobiography – a superb record of a bygone motor racing age – is now in final production, due for publication early in the New Year.

Tech Tactics used to be a Zone 1 late winter event in Springfield, MA. One year, Phil Hill was a speaker and he showed some of his Kodachrome slides. He prefaced it with the hope that it wouldn’t be like going down to your uncle’s basement to see his slides. Well, it was sort of like going down to your uncle’s basement to see his slides—but if your uncle wants to show you his slides from back when he was World Driving Champion, don’t miss the chance!

‘Inside Track‘ will be available in a variety of editions: • BOOKSHOP EDITION – a single volume of 480 pages, covering some 70 events with over 650 photographs, every one annotated with Phil’s rich and detailed captions. • COLLECTOR’S EDITION – two volumes, each of 480-pages, covering all 90 events that Phil photographed between 1950 and 1962 and including his entire archive of over 1250 photographs.

sgvr.pca.org 25 of 45 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 31 January 2017

• AUTOBIOGRAPHY – the full story of Phil’s formative years and racing life, from his Californian childhood during the 1930s to the start of his later years as a much loved elder statesman of the American vintage and classic car movement. • CONNOISSEUR’S EDITION – limited to just 200 signed and numbered copies, combining the two Collector’s volumes and the Autobiography.

You can preorder The Inside Track at www.philhillbook.com

Cops: Teens steal Porsches, brag about it on Instagram

Raisa Habersham The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 9:47 PM Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017:

Police are looking for at least two teens they say stole two Porsche SUVs from the company’s North America headquarters in Hapeville.

The teens entered the headquarters Jan. 16 and stole the cars just as a delivery driver was unloading them onto the lot, Channel 2 Action News reported. The SUVs were reportedly worth $200,000.

As the driver unloaded the cars, one of the teens got inside of the truck, grabbed keys to a few of the unloaded cars before he and a few others took off in a black Porsche Cayenne Turbo, police said.

Not long after the teens left the scene in the stolen car, police say they drove back and stole another one – this time a white Porsche Macan Turbo, Channel 2 reported.

East Point police chased after the cars, but ended it shortly after for safety reasons, Channel 2 reported. The alleged thieves got up to 100 mph during the chase.

sgvr.pca.org 26 of 45 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 31 January 2017

Police say the teen captured on security video, later posted cellphone video of himself driving one of the stolen SUVs on Instagram.

Days later, Atlanta police found the cars abandoned on a street. The Cayenne had damages to it, Channel 2 reported. Stolen knives, a gun holster and marijuana cigarette burns were found inside.

One of the teens filmed himself inside one of the cars bragging about stealing it and posted it onto Instagram, according to Channel 2.

“He was also boasting on social media that everyone was stealing Fords, and he's got a Porsche,” Boyes said.

Police took out arrest warrants on the suspect, whose name has not yet been released. They are still looking for at least two others connected to the crime.

Police aren’t yet sure if this was a planned car theft.

VW overtakes Toyota as top car company despite 'dieselgate' troubles

From www.telegraph.co.uk Alan Tovey, 30 JANUARY 2017 • 9:55AM

Volkswagen is once again the world’s biggest car-maker after Toyota announced a slowdown in its annual sales growth, handing the title to the troubled German giant.

The Japanese car company said 2016 sales, including its Daihatsu and Hino subsidiaries, rose by 0.2pc to 10.2m, meaning that it was beaten over the line by VW, which had sales of 10.3m vehicles including its Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Porsche marques, a rise of 3.8pc on the previous year.
