Graves brought her mount Verdades, up the levels herself with the guidance of trainers after her mother picked him out in a video as a foal. Their standout performances on U.S. soil in 2012 and 2013 earned them a spot on the Short List for the U.S. Dressage Team for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, enabling them to compete in Europe for the first time. Since then, she has been ranked as high as the number two dressage athlete in the world. Graves has been a valuable member of The Dutta. Corp. U.S. Dressage Team, competing on numerous nations cup teams. In 2018, she was named to her second WEG team having earned a team silver in the FEI Dressage Nations Cup Germany with Verdades. Throughout 2018, Graves and Verdades have earned eight first-place finishes both in the U.S. and abroad. This accomplishment included wins in the Grand Prix CDI-W and Grand Prix Freestyle CDI-W during week three of the 2018 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF); the Grand Prix CDI5* and Grand Prix Freestyle CDI5* during week five of the 2018 AGDF; the Grand Prix CDI-W and Grand Prix Freestyle CDI-W during week eight of the 2018 AGDF; the Grand Prix at the 2018 FEI World Cup™ Dressage Finals; and the Grand Prix CDIO5* at the 2018 CHIO Aachen. .

The financial commitment of competition has become prohibitive for some athletes, but thanks to the generous donors at the USET Foundation, riders like Callan Solem, Laura Graves and Matthew Brown have been able to reach their goals through grants and funding, bring- ing home top honors for the United States. SHOW JUMPING Callan Solem In equestrian sport, all junior riders dream of making it to the top of the sport and competing at the Grand Prix level, but the say- ing “it takes a village,” truly applies for the nation’s top show jump- ers. Callan Solem began her riding career as a working student for Carol Thompson, who recognized Solem’s talent and passion for the sport right away. With a dedication to her job and a love for the horses, Solem became the professional rider for Thompson in 1997, and in 2010 began riding for Virginia and Collin McNeil. Over the years, Solem has earned multiple top placings at some of the country’s biggest events, and has represented the United States at Nations Cup competitions in Europe and Mexico. But to be a part of the U.S. Show Jumping Team, it has taken more than just talent and dedication; it has taken the support of organi- zations like the USET Foundation.

As a sport, we started the year strong with team gold in dressage and a first-place finish in show jumping at the Nations Cup competitions in Wellington, Florida, as well as strong performances from our para dressage riders. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, competition paused, and the Tokyo Olympic Games were postponed. We had to pivot and be resourceful in ways we never could have expected. I commend our coaches, athletes, and those supporting the US Equestrian (USEF) High Performance programs for their resilience over the last year. Training continued—virtually and in person—despite a break in competition, and it’s clear that the dogged determination for which our U.S. teams are known did not wane. We have overcome very significant challenges, and it showed in our athletes’ preparedness once competition resumed late last year and early this year. At the Buckeye Nutrition USEF CCI4*-L Eventing National Championship, veteran riders Boyd Martin and Phillip Dutton claimed first and second places, respectively, while rising star Woods Baughman took third. In show jumping, Bliss Heers, Lillie Keenan, Brian Moggre, and Jessica Springsteen secured a first-place finish for the U.S. at the Nations Cup CSIO4* in Wellington. In para dressage, world number one Roxanne Trunnell set a world record by earning the highest-ever score in the individual para dressage test before leading the U.S.

Not only did the United States have its best World Equestrian Games in history, winning 12 medals - 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze - there were many personal bests illustrating the progression along the pathway, and podium finishes within reach for many more. There is much to celebrate and look forward to from all eight disciplines in the coming year. There were over 250 athletes involved in US Equestrian’s emerging, development and elite high performance programs who benefited from the generous support you provided this year. Additionally, your contributions and commitment to our teams make it possible to assemble the most skilled and professional veterinarians, farriers, physiotherapists, team managers and grooms, the “team behind the team”, allowing the athletes to remain focused on their job which is critical to their success, thank you. The extraordinary generosity of the USET Foundation’s closest friends, supporters and stakeholders has accelerated advancement for our United States Equestrian Teams. This has allowed US Equestrian to increase support for high performance athletes and expand development programs, strengthening the pipeline of talented and experienced riders, drivers and vaulters for future championships. Ensuring the future means affording elite and developing athletes the opportunity and financial resources to train and compete globally throughout the quadrennial. We extend our steadfast gratitude to you, our friends and supporters who love the sport and are helping our athletes and teams achieve greatness on the world stage.
