She earned numerous titles with her small pony, Swan Song, before she went on to much success in the Ljunior hunters and equitation divisions. As a junior jumper, Lauren rode on the 1993 gold medal Zone 10 team. The next year, at age 15, she won the USET Show Jumping Talent Search Finals East and secured the title of Pacific Coast Horseman’s Association Grand Prix Rookie of the Year. Partnered with Clasiko, Lauren fir t rode for the U.S. Equestrian Team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. From there, she went on to a string of successes with the American flag on her saddle pad. In 2003, Lauren represented the United States on the gold medal Pan American Games squad in the Dominican Republic. And from 2004 through 2006, Lauren was a member of successful U.S contingents competing in the Samsung Super League, with the U.S. finis - ing fir t in 2005. Lauren was also a member of the 2007 Pan American Games bronze-medal-winning team in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After stints on the winning Nations Cup teams in Rome, Italy, in 2009 and in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the following year, the Wellington, Florida, res- ident also competed on the U.S. squad at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. At the Toronto Pan American Games in 2015, Lauren earned team and individual bronze medals with Ohlala. In 2017, Lauren contributed to the Hermès U.S. show jumping teams that clinched Nations Cup gold in Sopot, Poland, Spruce Meadows, Canada, and Dublin, Ireland. In Ireland, an all-female squad earned the victory, forever mark- ing a historic moment in equestrian sport. Lauren also earned the Leading Lady Rider Award for the 2014 Win- ter Equestrian Festival. A highlight of Lauren’s 2016 season was her victory in the $130,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping for the President’s Cup at the Wash- ington International Horse Show, where she was leading rider. In 2017, she and Ohlala won the Great American $1 Million at HITS Ocala. hen I was a child and someone asked me what I wanted to do with Wmy life, I always said the same thing, “I’m going to ride in the Olympics.” I was fortunate that my father, Champ Hough, competed in the Helsinki Games in 1952 and won a team bronze medal in eventing. That was quite an inspiration for me.     A retrospective case-control study to investigate horse and jockey level risk factors associated with horse falls in Irish Point-to-Point races L. J. Smith, G. Tabor and J. Williams Abstract Horse racing as a high-risk sport can pose a significant risk to equine welfare. To date there have been limited epidemiological reviews of fall risk specific to point-to-point racing. This study aimed to identify horse and jockey level risk factors associated with horse falls and to compare these to published findings for Hurdle and Steeplechase racing. The study used a retrospective matched case-control design. Relevant variables were identified and information was collated for all races in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. Cases and controls were matched with a 1:3 ratio. Controls (n=2,547) were selected at random from all horses that completed in the same race (n=849). Horse and jockey level variables were analysed through univariable analysis to inform multivariable model building. A final matched case- control multivariable logistic regression model was refined, using fall/no fall as the dependent variable, through a backward stepwise process. Horse age was associated with an increased risk of horse falls. For every 1 unit increase in age there was a 1.2 times increased risk of falling. The overall number of races ran within 12 months was associated with a decreased risk of falling. The jockeys previous seasons percentage wins was associated with the risk of horse falls with jockeys who had 0-4% wins and 5-9% wins having an increase in risk compared to those who had over 20% wins/runs.

    Horsing Around IN THE HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS OF POLO IN ASIA We all meet up during the six-hour stopover in the Beijing Airport. The invitation comes from the Genghis Khan Polo Club to play in Mongolia and then to head back to China for a university tournament at the Metropolitan Polo Club in Tianjin. Say, what? Yes, polo! Both countries are resurrecting the ancient sport—a tale of two cultures—and the Harvard players are to be emissaries to help generate a new ballgame in Asia. In a cavernous airport restaurant, I survey the Harvard Polo Team: Jane is captain of the women’s team; Shawn, captain of the men’s team; George, the quiet one, is a physicist; Danielle, a senior is a German major; Sarah, a biology major; Aemilia writes for the Harvard Crimson. Marina, a mathematician, will join us later. Neil and Johann are incoming freshmen; Merrall, still in high school, is a protégé of the actor Tommy Lee Jones—the godfather of Harvard polo. And where are the grownups? Moon Lai, a friend of Neil’s parents, is the photographer from Minnesota. Crocker Snow, Harvard alum and head of the Edward R. Murrow Center at Tufts, is tour director and coach. I am along as cheer leader and chronicler. We stagger onto the late-night plane to Ulan Bator (UB), the capital of Mongolia, pile into a van and drive into the darkness—always in the constant traffic of trucks. Our first camp of log cabins is near an official site of Naadam—Mongolia’s traditional summer festival of horse racing, wrestling and archery.

Over the course of the last ten to fifteen years I have had the amazing good fortune to get to know and study with one our current Master Horsemen, Ms. Bettina Drummond. As a student of Nuno Oliveria, a scholar in the subject of Classical Dressage, and a perpetual seeker of a deep relationship with her horses, Bettina’s knowledge is unequalled. In 2012 she came out West with her Quarterhorse stallion to acquaint him with his “Western” heritage and to further her study of the comparisons between Classical Dressage and true Vaquero traditions and training. I had a marvelous time riding the mountains of eastern Oregon, playing with cows, and having long discussions with Bettina in comparing our western horsemanship jobs and relationships with our horses with her background in true Classical Dressage. One of my over-arching goals was to seek an answer to the question of whether or not I could bring along my horses to accomplish the jobs necessary on the ranch, but still adhere to the principles of the Classical Dressage training scale. (i.e. Note these aspects vary slightly in order and have different interpretations given differences in languages: Rhythm, Suppleness/Relaxation, Contact, Straightness, Engagement/Impulsion, and Collection) See articles regarding use of the Training Scale at: www.tnthorsemanship.com/articles Now I am by no means a scholar regarding the bio-mechanics required of the horse/human team to accomplish any job on the ranch or on the dressage court.

    USET Foundation NEWS UNITED STATES EQUESTRIAN TEAM FOUNDATION • VOLUME 14, ISSUE 3 • WINTER 2015 FOUNDATION SUPPORT Grants Athletes’ Team Dreams Competing at the top of equestrian sport and bringing home medals takes more than just drive and dedication in the modern era of show jumping, dressage and eventing. The financial commitment of competition has become prohibitive for some athletes, but thanks to the generous donors at the USET Foundation, riders like Callan Solem, Laura Graves and Matthew Brown have been able to reach their goals through grants and funding, bring- ing home top honors for the United States. SHOW JUMPING Callan Solem In equestrian sport, all junior riders dream of making it to the top of the sport and competing at the Grand Prix level, but the say- ing “it takes a village,” truly applies for the nation’s top show jump- ers. Callan Solem began her riding career as a working student for Carol Thompson, who recognized Solem’s talent and passion for the sport right away. With a dedication to her job and a love for the horses, Solem became the professional rider for Thompson in 1997, and in 2010 began riding for Virginia and Collin McNeil. Over the years, Solem has earned multiple top placings at some of the country’s biggest events, and has represented the United States at Nations Cup competitions in Europe and Mexico. But to be a part of the U.S. Show Jumping Team, it has taken more than just talent and dedication; it has taken the support of organi- zations like the USET Foundation.
