The heritage of these centers survives in their physical structures and instruments; in the scientific data recorded in their observing logs, photographic plates, and instrumental records of various kinds; and more commonly in the published and unpublished records of astronomers and of the observatories at which they worked. These records have continuing value for both historical and scientific research. In January 2007 the American Astronomical Society (AAS) formed a working group to develop and disseminate procedures, criteria, and priorities for identifying, designating, and preserving structures, instruments, and records so that they will continue to be available for astronomical and historical research, for the teaching of astronomy, and for outreach to the general public. The scope of this charge is quite broad, encompassing astronomical structures ranging from archaeoastronomical sites to modern observatories; papers of individual astronomers, observatories and professional journals; observing records; and astronomical instruments themselves. Reflecting this wide scope, the members of the working group include historians of astronomy, practicing astronomers and observatory directors, and specialists Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Santa encounters tight security during in astronomical instruments, archives, and archaeology. a wartime visit to Oak Ridge. A brief report on the Bureau meeting can be found elsewhere in this Newsletter. The XCCC worked hard with the President and Secretary-General of ICTAM2012, Professor Yilong Bai and Professor Jianxiang Wang, to iron out the last remaining difficulties in the run-up to the Congress. However, our memory of the meeting has been tragically coloured by the sudden death on 9 September, at home in Illinois, of Hassan Aref, the Secretary of the Congress Committee. Hassan was a leading figure in fluid dynamics, having pioneered the application of dynamical systems theory to fluid flows – he was the first to develop the concept of chaotic advection in the 1980s and 1990s – and was at the time of his death at the forefront of vortex dynamics, mixing, and topological fluid dynamics. He was also a major exponent of the use of supercomputers in fluid dynamics, starting when he was on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego in 1985-1992.

    FOREWORD This annual report about the year 2002 contains information on publications, seminars and guests. A list of DCAMM reports number 1-612 including the final references and also a list of the DCAMM S-reports number S1-S84 is available on request. The report serves mainly as reference and documentation for accomplished activities. Information on the actual activities are available on our homepage: www.mek.dtu.dk and on the homepages of the cooperating departments of the center. In the year 2002 the DCAMM Graduate Research School gave 3 advanced courses: 1) Stability of Ships, 10-18 June 2) Optimal designs- Size, Shape and Topology, 20-28 June 3) Machine Acoustics, 20-24 August The school was visited by 3 guestprofessors, 8 guestlecturers, 3 gueststudents and 63 course participants. With very limited financiel support, the school continues its activities in year 2003.
