  • Streamside Habitat Assessment
    Streamside Habitat Assessment During rain storms forests, wetlands and meadows function like giant sponges soaking and infiltrating water slowly into the ground. When these areas are developed, water can’t soak through roads, parking lots, or building and instead quickly runs into our streams. This results in flooding, pollution, and destruction of the stream habitat. Volunteers have helped monitor these physical stream changes through a Riparian (streamside) Habitat Assessment. Macroinvertebrate Survey The Riparian Habitat Assessment was supplemented with a quick macroinvertebrate survey. Commonly found macroinvertebrates include aquatic insects, clams, mussels, snails, worms, amphipods, and crayfish. Healthy Delaware streams contain a wide variety of macroinvertebrates, each with its own unique requirements for survival. Pollution sensitive organisms require high levels of oxygen and are sensitive to toxic substances and habitat degradation. Organisms that can withstand very low oxygen levels, high toxicity and/or poor habitat are known as pollution-tolerant species. Differences in macroinvertebrate pollution sensitivity can be used to assess water quality. Pollution sensitive macro’s include: Ephemeroptera (Mayflies), Plecoptera (Stoneflies), and Trichoptera (Caddisflies). However, families within each of these Orders can vary widely in tolerance. The caddisfly family Hydropsychidae, for example, is relatively pollution tolerant. Therefore, identification to family level, or lower, provides a more accurate determination of stream health but is more resource intensive. The Riparian Habitat Assessment study used a rapid screening approach to characterize the macroinvertebrate community which, combined with the visual observations, provides a more comprehensive picture of the stream health and helps to determine sites in need of more in-depth study.

    Chapter 4 Natural Resources Inventory Natural resources greatly influence land use in New Garden. This chapter provides an overview of the major natural resources, their importance to the Township, and a summary of municipal regulations currently in place for their protection. A major goal of this chapter is to inventory these resources and examine potential gaps in existing protection measures to determine the best course of action for their protection. Natural resources should serve as a primary determinant in what types and intensities of land uses are appropriate in each area of the Township. As such, they will provide important guidance for the development of the land use plan. LAND RESOURCES New Garden Township lies entirely within the Piedmont Province of the Appalachian Highlands, a band of rolling topography that stretches from New York to Georgia. The "fall line" marking the transition between the Piedmont Province and the Coastal Plain Province to the east passes just to the south of New Garden through northern Delaware. Within the Piedmont, most topographic features (ridgelines, rock outcrops) tend to be oriented in a northeast to southwest pattern while the slope of the land and drainage patterns generally dip in a southeasterly direction toward the Coastal Plain. This pattern is evident within Chester County and within the Township. Within Chester County, New Garden is part of the southern Chester County Lowland, a large band of the Piedmont that is characterized by lower elevations and less alignment of topographic features due to the more complete weathering of the area geology. Climate Climate can be defined as the aggregate of day-to-day weather such as precipitation, temperature, humidity, and wind over an extended period of time.

TITLE 7 NATURAL RESOURCES & ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL 1 DELAWARE ADMINISTRATIVE CODE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL DIVISION OF WATERSHED STEWARDSHIP 7401 Surface Water Quality Standards 1.0 Intent 1.1 It is the policy of the Department to maintain within its jurisdiction surface waters of the State of satisfactory quality consistent with public health and public recreation purposes, the propagation and protection of fish and aquatic life, and other beneficial uses of the water. 1.2 Where conflicts develop between stated surface water uses, stream criteria, or discharge criteria, designated uses for each segment shall be paramount in determining the required stream criteria, which, in turn, shall be the basis of specific discharge limits or other necessary controls. 1.3 Where existing facilities operating under a permit from this Department are required to reduce pollution concentrations or loadings due to the implementation of these surface water quality standards, a reasonable schedule for compliance may be granted in accordance with standards or requirements established in applicable statutes and regulations. 1.4 The Department intends to develop an agency-wide program to assess, manage, and communicate human health cancer risks from the major categories of environmental pollution under its jurisdiction.

Settlement patterns, including locations of roads, utilities, and other infrastructure, are influenced by geologic formations. Soil, drainage, difficulty of excavation, soundness of foundations, and groundwater supplies are all determined to at least some degree by underlying geologic properties. South of the rail line, the Township is mostly underlain by a Wissahickon (oligoclase mica schist) formation, a moderately hard rock metamorphosed from soft clay shales originally present, which forms rolling uplands.

Please register for the field trip of your choice when you register for the conference. Field trips require some walking on hilly and uneven terrain, unpaved surfaces and possibly wet ground. Sturdy, water-resistant shoes and weather-appropriate apparel are recommended. Participants may want to bring binoculars, cameras, and note-taking supplies. Boxed lunches are provided. Vegetarian options are available upon request at registration. Field Trip# 1- Three Restoration Projects in the White Clay Creek Watershed at Delaware Park, Newark, DE This field trip will begin at the U Delaware Clayton Conference Center and proceed to a classroom for a short presentation. A bus/van will take participant just a few miles to the field trip location at Delaware Park. The Delaware Park facility encompasses a country club and golf course, horse racing track and facilities, and a casino. The White Clay Creek, part of a National Wild and Scenic Watershed, and Mill Creek flow through portions of the facility. During the original construction of the facility and golf course, restoration took place along the streams, some of it compensatory and some to protect the new infrastructure.

    State of Delaware 2006 Combined Watershed Assessment Report (305(b)) and Determination for the Clean Water Act Section 303(d) List of Waters Needing TMDLs Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control February 13, 2007 Preface The State of Delaware 2006 Combined Watershed Assessment Report (305(b)) and Determination for the Clean Water Act Section 303(d) List of Waters Needing TMDLs provides a statewide assessment of surface water and ground water resources, highlights Delaware’s initiatives in water resources management and pollution control and provides a list of waters that need TMDLs to meet water quality standards. The document fulfills the reporting requirements set forth under Sections 305(b) and 303(d) of the Federal Clean water Act of 1977, as amended in 1981 and 1987, and is organized in accordance with federal Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) guidance documents. This document summarizes statewide water quality assessments, provides an overview of major initiatives and concerns on a statewide basis, and lists waters needing TMDLs. Tables are provided which show the result of water quality analysis and designated use support findings for data from the period of September 2000 through August 2005. There are two appendices to the report. Appendix A is the data provided by citizen monitoring programs. Appendix B contains comments and responses to the Tentative Determination for the State of Delaware 2006 Clean Water Act Section 303(d) List of Waters Needing TMDLs.
