TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2018 WILL THE CURSE OF EQUINE FATALITY RATE SHOWS MINOR INCREASE IN 2017, DOWN 20% FROM 2009 APOLLO FINALLY FALL? While the rate of fatal equine injuries remains 20% lower than the rate in 2009, an analysis of data from The Jockey Club=s Equine Injury Database (EID) has shown a modest increase in the figures for 2017 (1.61 per 1,000 starts) compared to 2016 (1.54 per 1,000 starts). The analysis, which was performed by Professor Tim Parkin, veterinarian and epidemiologist from the University of Georgia, also confirmed a 17% drop in risk of fatal injury on dirt and a 30% drop in risk of fatal injury on turf when compared to 2009, when the EID began collecting data. AAlthough fatality rates increased this year from last year, the increase in rates is not statistically significant,@ said Parkin. AHowever, the overall decline in the rate in fatalities since the creation of the EID is statistically significant and reflects a continuously improving safety record for North American racing.@ (Click to continue to p6) Justify | Benoit photo The Week in Review, by Bill Finley IN TDN EUROPE TODAY On the hardwood, and not the racetrack, we learned this week PARISLONGCHAMP BACK IN THE LIMELIGHT that there is no such thing as an irrefutable truth in sports. • Mise En Page 1
BEAUMEC DE HOUELLE 2015 grey Martaline-Zandalee by Trempolino By leading NH stallion Martaline out of a black type mare at Auteuil, impressive winner of Prix Cambacérès G1 at 3, BEAUMEC DE HOUELLE combines the bloodlines of most influential sires such as Linamix , Sadler’s Wells , Mill Reef , Sharpen Up , Nijinsky II and Raise a Native as well as Elite Mares Lunadix , Bahamian et Green Valley . This very high profile bloodline has indeed been confirmed by Grande Steeplechase d’Europa G1 winnner, Styline who comes from the same Martaline x Trempolino x Green Dancer cross! Martaline sired many top-class jumpers. His progeny gives a lot of interesting and useful indications to cross his son BEAUMEC DE HOUELLE . Of course, let’s start with CADOUDAL who is present in the pedigrees of 5 G1 winners by Martaline , 3 of which through KADALKO . This option creates an inbreeding to GREEN DANCER present in the pedigrees of 3 NH Group winners. Priority will be given to SAINT DES SAINTS , a son of Cadoudal who brings in the blood of Lyphard and Tanerko , who both appear in the pedigree of Linamix . SADLER’S WELLS’s position in the pedigree of BEAUMEC DE HOUELLE does prompt to try and double this chef-de-race who carries the best genes. Indeed, this formula is currently found in 8 NH G1 (in 4×4 or below). MONTJEU in particular springs to mind for the blood of Top Ville and his references with Linamix (Montmartre , Ectot , etc). Priority will be given to daughters of AUTHORIZED , to create a classic doubling on Elite Mare GREEN VALLEY as observed in the pedigree of champion Tiger Roll ! Any other source of Sadler’s Wells’s blood shall be welcome, particularly through GALILEO (brings in Mr Prospector ), HIGH CHAPARRAL (brings in Darshaan ), GREAT PRETENDER (ditto) or KING’S THEATRE , who sired the winner of Kauto Star Novices’ Chase G1 Royal Vacation from a mare from BEAUMEC DE HOUELLE’s female line.
