Winchester College Job Description – Assistant Rowing Coach General Winchester College was founded in 1382. It is one of the world's most prestigious and famous schools. The school buildings were opened in 1394 and have been in use ever since. Nine additional boarding houses were opened between 1859 and 1869 and a tenth in 1905. The total number of pupils is now 690. All are boys aged 13-18 and all are boarders. Winchester is hugely fortunate in having extensive grounds of approximately 250 acres which include; the Fallodon Nature Reserve with its permissive public paths (50 acres), St Catherine's Hill and Twyford Down (137 acres) which are both Public Access Areas. Additionally, the College maintains some 52 acres of playing fields and 11 acres of formal gardens. A further 400 acres, including a golf course, on the far side of the M3 are also owned by the school. The school is staffed by over 500 employees which includes the Boarding Houses, Works Department, Grounds, Riverkeepers, Central Cleaners, Administration, Laundry, PE Centre, Medical Centre and many more departments. Admission is based on the combined criteria of academic strength, and the ability to contribute in other ways to the cultural, sporting and social life of the school. It remains the school's ambition, consistent with the Foundation Charter and charitable purpose, to broaden the school's intake to include pupils whose parents cannot meet the full fee. The Boat Club Winchester College Boat Club is one of the oldest school boat clubs in the country, founded officially in 1867. It is a small (less than 70 boys) but nationally competitive club that has an excellent coach to athlete ratio and is well supported by the College. Most rowing takes place on the Itchen Navigation, part of the network of rivers and streams running through Winchester, and there is a very well-equipped boathouse within walking distance of the College. Long-distance training takes place on the tidal waters in Southampton from the University's boat hard. The club has a high quality fleet of boats and will be making substantial additions to it next year. In the first year, all rowing is in sculling boats and most racing is in coxed quads and octuples. At the start of the second year the transition is made to sweep boats and the main racing boat from then on is the VIII. Winchester crews race at all levels at head races during the winter season and regattas during the summer. The Assistant Coach will be responsible for coaching one of the three sweep squads (J15, J16 or J17- 18). They will work closely with the Head Coach to deliver high quality rowing coaching which will involve coaching other squads as required. Role and Responsibilities To work closely with the Head Coach to deliver high quality rowing coaching to boys aged 13 – 18. To work the training hours as determined by the Head Coach, Rowing, and be available at other times, as required. Assist with boat handling and putting rowers on and off the water Teach sound rowing technique Monitor performance and recording training data on a regular (weekly) basis Monitor technique of athletes to ensure that rowing is safe and standards of technical ability are high. Work successfully and communicate effectively as part of a large sports coaching team Assist the Head Coach and Master in Charge of Rowing with the administration of the club, trips and tours Provide support to the coaching team at rowing fixtures and events Promote the values of fair play, teamwork and competition and respect for officials and British Rowing rules. Promote an ethos of good practice among student rowers with regard to the use and care of boat house equipment. To assist the Head of Rowing with boat related tasks such as gearing oars, rigging boats and fitting telemetry. To assist in capsize drill training at the start of each new academic year, or at desired times throughout the year Help with driving the trailer to events and the training camp. Any other duties that the Head Coach and Master in Charge of rowing sees fit, providing that such duties are appropriate to the role. Person Specification A sound knowledge of rowing and a sporting background of relevance. Capable of planning and delivering against identified goals. Excellent communication skills with the confidence and ability to give clear instructions. A strong team player, leading their own team and integrating it with those in a broader organisational environment. Good time management skills; superb organisation. Reliable and enthusiastic. Coaching qualifications for rowing are desirable. It is desirable for applicants to have at least one of the following qualifications; B+E Driving License (towing license), UKSCA level 2, RYA level 2 powerboat licence. Terms of Service Start date The College is looking to make an appointment to start on the 27th August 2018. Salary Salary will be circa £17,000 depending on experience. Accommodation may be available but this cannot be guaranteed. Hours of Work Up to 25 hours per week split over Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday and Saturdays, during term time only. Some Sundays, to attend races will be required. Attendance at the Winter and Easter training camps required. Some overtime may be required which will be paid at the hourly rate. Holidays The College leave year runs from 1 September to 31 August. This position will be entitled to the statutory holiday requirements. These are presently 28 days and this will be pro-rated for those who work part time. Any Public Bank Holiday occurring during term time is deemed to be a normal working day. All leave must be taken outside of term time. Pension and Life Cover After three months’ employment, employees will be auto-enrolled into the College’s pension scheme according to legislative thresholds. Those who are not eligible for auto-enrolment may still elect to join the College’s pension scheme. Initially, when joining the College’s pension scheme, employees will become a member of the College’s Group Personal Pension Plan (GPP). For this Plan, known as Tier 1, the employee contributes 1% and the employer 1%. After nine months’ membership of the Tier 1 plan employees may opt to join Tier 2, which is also a Group Personal Pension Plan and the contributions are 5% from the employee and a 9% contribution from the College. Employees in Tier 1 automatically qualify for a Life Cover of 2 times salary. On entry to Tier 2 Life Cover changes to 4 times salary.
