INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For illustrations that cannot be satisfactorily reproduced by xerographic means, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and inserted into your xerographic copy. These prints are available upon request from the Dissertations Customer Services Department. 5. Some pages in any document may have indistinct print. In all cases the best available copy has been filmed. University Microfilms International 300 N. Falwell has risen in recent years from near obscurity as a Baptist pastor in Lynchburg, Virginia, to national celebrity as the founder and President of Moral Majority, Inc., the front-line political action organization of the new Religious Right. Limited to an analysis of his political preaching the study specifically discusses 1) Falwell1s background and speaker preparation, 2) the historical setting surrounding the recent resurgence of Fundamentalism and its political involvement, 3) Falwell's audiences and occasions, 4) his use of evidence and lines of argument, 5) his style and delivery, and 6) his effectiveness. The study is based on a series of sermons delivered on five consecutive Sundays beginning July 1, 1979. Bach sermon announced the formation of a new political action group, Moral Majority, Inc., and contained lengthy appeals promoting membership in the new organization. Original transcriptions of these speeches were used in this study. v For the first thirty-five years of his life Falwell was a separatist. He viewed involvement in social or political movements as secular and improper distractions for a man of God. The Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion brought Falwell out of spiritual separatism and into the political arena. His nationally syndicated television program, "The Old-Time Gospel Hour," has provided him media visibility and enabled him to coalesce a substantial and financially supportive national audience. Falwell's audiences were primarily blue-collar, middle and lower-middle class, and both religiously and politically conservative. They were sympathetic to Falwell's views, and considered his attacks on secular humanism and liberal politics to be biblically based. Consequently, Falwell spent more time asserting his conclusions than he did justifying them. Falwell relied heavily upon emotional appeals in his sermons. He gave heaviest treatment to those appeals classified as fear appeals. In addition, he employed logical proof in his sermons, but his sources of evidence were few. He relied heavily upon the Bible as an evidential source and as an absolute authority. He often employed quantitative supporting materials, but rarely substantiated them. His reasoning, almost without exception, was cast in syllogistic terms. vi Falwell employed several rhetorical strategies, including that of the rhetorical demagogue. He employed this demagogic strategy by 1) intensifying a popular crisis psychology, namely that America is on a disastrous downhill trend, 2) defining the cause of the crisis as a single abstract evil, namely secular humanism, and 3) providing an equally simple escape from the crisis, a new faith, a new belief, with himself at the helm, namely Moral Majority, Inc. This study reveals that Falwell's speeches were effective in mobilizing

THE PRESIDENT visited the site early this afternoon. “Think about your life just prior to the plague," he told the crowd. This week’s schedule and speakers THIS MORNING WAS YET ANOTHER PIECE OF EVIDENCE for the legion of political observers who believe some high-profile congressional hearings turn out to be a waste of time. MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE spent the morning lecturing Postmaster General LOUIS DEJOY about the USPS -- oftentimes without asking a single question. When they asked questions, they sometimes sounded like this: Do you believe you need to follow the law? Is your backup plan to be pardoned like Roger Stone, Rep. JIM COOPER (D-Tenn.) asked? Why are the Democrats out to get you, Rep. JIM JORDAN (R-Ohio) queried? Why doesn’t this hearing about the USPS include debate about the PPP -- it’s a “waste of time,” Rep. CHIP ROY (R-Texas) said. In addition, the hearing was riddled with technical difficulties. REP. STEPHEN LYNCH (D-Mass.) asked if DEJOY would replace removed sorting machines -- DEJOY said no, but they couldn’t get around to figuring out why, because LYNCH had used up all of his time. MEANWHILE, millions of Americans are wondering if their prescription drugs are going to get delivered, if their mail-in votes will actually be counted and what elected officials are actually doing to make their lives better in the middle of a pandemic and economic recession.

  • 79 Pastor's Marital Relationship One of the Most Significant Reasons
79 CHAPTER 3 THE CAUSES AND CURE OF THE MORAL FAILURE OF PASTORS Pastor’s Marital Relationship One of the most significant reasons behind pastoral attrition is the increasing number of clergy who violate their marital vows and commit adultery. This has become so commonplace in the United States that an alarm about this grave danger must be sounded to young pastors entering the ministry. Here we will examine how prevalent the problem is quantitatively, and then look for causes and cures. All of my research and interviews with pastors who have failed morally indicate an interesting common denominator—almost every pastor admitted to me that his marriage was not vibrant, romantic, sexually passionate, or spiritually intimate when he began the affair. The fallen pastors remarked that their marital relationship(s) had corroded to that of a “roommate” coexistence instead of that of two lovers achieving new levels of spiritual, emotional, and sexual intimacy. Sexual activity and intimacy was stale, unplanned, and infrequent. These marriages resembled more of a brother/sister relationship than that of lovers—they were simply two people coexisting. Similarly, the couples’ spiritual bond was disconnected, as evidenced by infrequent prayer time together and less sharing of spiritual needs. I interviewed a number of successful, young, cutting-edge pastors who built large churches and who each committed adultery at around their five-year church anniversaries, just as their congregations showed signs of permanent influence and establishment, several with 1,000 or more people attending. 80 Why the five-year mark of moral decline? Why in the midst of becoming established and showing outward signs of success? According to a report published by the Francis Schaeffer Institute of Church Leadership, 77 percent of pastors responding to a survey indicated that they did not have a good marriage.83 Several of the pastors I interviewed indicated their poor marriages were a reality for years prior to the start of their churches and their illicit affairs.

MARZEN* MICHAEL CONKLIN** ABSTRACT The coronavirus pandemic has drastically affected nearly every aspect of American life. Unfortunately, it has also created an op- portunity for those willing to exploit vulnerable citizens by selling fake “cures.” This Article analyzes a lawsuit against televangelist Jim Bakker for doing just that. This Article also calls for increased protection for individuals when a global health pandemic and na- tional emergency have been declared. This Article advocates a novel proposal—the enacting of a federal statute making it a felony for an individual to knowingly sell a fraudulent cure for any disease that has been designated a pandemic by the World Health Organization and in which the President of the United States has designated a national emergency. The following federal criminal statute is proposed: Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, for the express knowing purpose of obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, rep- resentations, or promises of a cure for a disease designated by the World Health Organization as a global pandemic and designated by the President of the United States as a national emergency pursuant to the provisions of the National Emergencies Act, shall be fined not more than $2,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 50 years, or both.

Starting from The Fellowship Foundation founded in the USA in the 1930s and looking at similar and interconnected developments in various countries from South America, Africa, and Europe, the article explores theological foundations of today's world- wide ascend of fascism. Using the example of Anders Behring Breivik’sfamous terrorist attack in Norway, it explores theoretical background for Alt-Right attacks on political correctness and ‘cultural Marxism’. Looking into the 'end of the world' theology and its morality, the article explains deep relationships between Christian fundamentalist prosperity theology and Israel. The article connects Christianity’s forward-looking, linear view of history with ‘end of the world’ theology and capitalism.
