LEWANDOWSKI SAID HE COULD BEST HELP TRUMP “OUTSIDE THE FORMAL STRUCTURE OF GOVERNMENT” & FOUNDED A DC-BASED CONSULTING FIRM THAT SPECIALIZED IN ADVANCING THE TRUMP AGENDA…

December 2016: Lewandowski Said He Could Best Help Trump “Outside The Formal Structure Of The Government” In Statement Released Following Opening Of Consulting Firm. “’I will always be President-elect Trump's biggest supporter,’ Lewandowski said in a statement. ‘After considering multiple opportunities within the administration, I informed him and his team I think I can best help him outside the formal structure of the government. I very much look forward to doing that every day.’ The website of the new government affairs and political consulting firm, called Avenue Strategies, advertised Lewandowski's and Bennett's close ties to Trump and even their office's physical proximity to the White House, at 1717 Pennsylvania Avenue (the same building that currently houses Trump's transition team).” [Politico, 12/21/16]

 Lewandowski Said Goal Of His Consulting Firm Was To Ensure “Individuals Who Want To Support Trump’s Agenda Will Have The Opportunity To Do That.” “While Bennett said he has never been registered before as a lobbyist, Lewandowski was previously a registered lobbyist between 2005 and 2011, with clients including Passport Systems and Borrego Solar. Lewandowski did not commit to registering as a lobbyist. ‘I've never said I'm going to be a registered lobbyist,’ he said. ‘What we're going to do is make sure individuals who want to support Trump's agenda will have the opportunity to do that.’" [Politico, 12/21/16]

Politico: Lewandowski Made It Seem That Entire Purpose Of His Consulting Firm Was “To Help Advance Trump’s Agenda”. “Lewandowski's statement made it sound like the firm's purpose was to help advance Trump's agenda: ‘It is necessary to have strong, organized outside groups who can help ensure the president-elect's agenda is achieved. My goal is to make sure the priorities of the Trump administration become a reality.’ But the firm's website makes clear it's in business for its clients: ‘Our firm provides client-tailored strategy and guidance carefully designed to help our clients navigate our government.’ Lewandowski had openly jockeyed for a top job in Trump's White House, at one point telling people that he wanted to be chief of staff. But a number of Trump's close allies objected to the prospect of hiring Lewandowski for an influential job, citing his penchant for bitter infighting and allegations of aggressive behavior.” [Politico, 12/21/16]

Lewandowski Claimed His Lobbying Effort Did Not Conflict With The “Drain The Swamp” Message Of Trump

December 2016: Lewandowski Said His Lobbying Efforts Didn’t Conflict With Trump’s “Drain The Swamp” Message Because That Pertained To Bureaucrats Not Government Contractors. “Lewandowski himself has railed against lobbyists and consultants to colleagues on the Trump campaign, at one point advocating the idea of a ‘blacklist’ of consultants who opposed Trump and who he hinted would be barred from lucrative political work under Trump. In an interview, Lewandowski said his firm didn't conflict with Trump's message, suggesting that ‘drain the swamp’ referred to bureaucracy, not people profiting on government contacts. (In fact, all five points of Trump's plan to "drain the swamp" involved lobbying, and none involved bureaucracy.) ‘The message he has talked about is bureaucracy that has ran amok is a problem,’ he said. ‘I think most companies would prefer to have a fast 'no' than a long 'maybe.' We are going to help companies get a faster answer.’" [Politico, 12/21/16]

Washington Post: Lewandowski’s Firm’s Affiliate Solicited Business In Eastern Europe By “Offering Access To Trump, Vice President Mike Pence”. “Last week, Politico reported that an affiliate of Avenue — Washington East West Political Strategies — had been soliciting business in Eastern Europe by offering clients access to Trump, Vice President Pence and other top administration officials.” [Washington Post, 5/4/17]

Washington Post: Other Lobbyist Raised Concerns Over Lewandowski’s Firm Because He Was “Boasting Of His Ability To Reach Trump Personally” To Potential Clients. “Other Trump advisers have formed consulting and lobbying firms after the election. Lewandowski, who served as campaign manager until June of last year, had been among the most high profile. His refusal to register became controversial among other lobbyists who circulated reports that Lewandowski was pitching potential clients by boasting of his ability to reach Trump personally.” [Washington Post, 5/4/17]

Lewandowski’s Firm Landed Wealthy Corporate Clients That Supported Trump’s Campaign

CNBC: Lewandowski’s Consulting Firm Clients Included “Mostly Foreign Clients” That Included “Venezuelan Petroleum Giants ”, “Altria”. “The firm, which was founded by former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and senior campaign advisor Barry Bennett, put together a list of mainly foreign clients starting shortly after the 2016 presidential election. The lobbying registration filing, which is a formal announcement describing the agreement between a lobbying firm and a separate company, was signed in May.” [CNBC, 5/14/18]

CNBC: Trump’s Economic Sanctions Against Venezuela “Excluded Citgo”. “In August 2017, Trump signed financial sanctions against Venezuela but excluded Citgo. LEWANDOWSKI THREATENED TO USE HIS “POLITICAL CLOUT” TO MAKE HIS NEIGHBOR’S LIVES “A NIGHTMARE” FOLLOWING LEGAL DISPUTE 5

July 2017: Lewandowski Filed $5 Million Lawsuit Against Neighbors Over Access To A Waterfront Property He Owned In Windham, NH; Claimed Neighbors Intentionally Blocked Easement To Property. “Lewandowski, who lives at 21 Emerson Road, filed a $5 million lawsuit against his neighbors Glenn and Irene Schwartz in July 2017 over access to a waterfront property he owns at nearby 15 Emerson Road. He claims the Schwartzes purposefully blocked an easement that runs through their property, hindering construction of a now-completed 2,152 square foot garage on his land that cannot be accessed any other way.” [Derry News, 9/28/18]

August 2017: Lewandowski’s Neighbors Filed Countersuit Claiming He Harassed Them In Land Dispute, Threatened To Use “Political Clout” To Make Their Lives “A Nightmare”. “Glenn and Irene Schwartz countersued Lewandowski this month after he filed a $5 million lawsuit in July over access to a pond-front property in Windham, New Hampshire. Lewandowski accused the couple of blocking an easement granted to him so he could reach the tract. Court documents indicate Lewandowski is building a garage at the property. In the countersuit, the Schwartzes accuse Lewandowski of repeatedly intimidating them, once coming out of his house with a baseball bat and another time yelling on the phone that he would ‘use his political connections and clout to shut down all building and work and make your life a nightmare with an expensive and extended lawsuit.’” [AP, 8/15/17]

 Defendants In Lewandowski Lawsuit Claimed He Told Them He Would Buy Their House “For 10 Cents On The Dollar” After Financially Ruining The Couple. “The dispute involves an easement on the Schwartz property that Lewandowski has been using to access the property where he was building the garage, which is located near his residence. Lewandowski is allowed to use the easement, but the Schwartzes claim he used it beyond what was intended. They filed a counter suit. In their latest motion, the Schwartzes allege Lewandowski threatened them with an expensive and extended lawsuit in 2015 and that in May 2017 told them during a phone call that ‘if they did not cooperate with him, he would sue and become the defendants' worst nightmare and eventually break them and tie them up in court indefinitely at great cost and harm.’ They also claim that Irene Schwartz heard Lewandowski make a comment on June 15 that ‘he was going to buy her house for 10 cents on the dollar when they cannot afford to stay in court anymore.’" [Union Leader, 8/10/18]

 October 2018: Lewandowski’s Lawsuit Was Dismissed; Neighbors Agreed To Settle Countersuit Without Trial. “Glenn and Irene Schwartz countersued Lewandowski after he filed a $5 million lawsuit over access to a pond- front property in Windham, New Hampshire. Lewandowski accused the couple of blocking an easement granted to him so he could reach the tract while the couple said he threatened them. Court documents indicate Lewandowski is building a garage at the property alongside a cottage. Lewandowski's lawsuit has been dismissed while the Schwartz's have agreed to settle most of their claims except a running dispute over the use of a small easement that allows Lewandowski to access the property. A jury trial set for Tuesday was canceled. ‘I think the settlement was in the interest of both parties,’ said Lewandowski's attorney William Sullivan, adding that the details remained confidential.” [AP, 10/17/18]

BuzzFeed: Lewandowski Was Accused Of Making “Sexual Comments About Female Journalists”, Calling Women In Campaign Press Corps “To Make Unwanted Romantic Advances”. “In recent interviews with more than half a dozen sources who have worked with Trump’s top aide, Corey Lewandowski, the strategist was accused of pushing a CNN reporter who tried to ask the candidate a question; physically confronting an aide for a rival campaign in a post-debate spin room; publicly shouting threats over the phone at a restaurant; making sexual comments about female journalists; and calling up women in the campaign press corps late at night to make unwanted romantic advances.” [Buzzfeed, 3/21/16]

Buzzfeed: Lewandowski made “Sexually Suggestive” Comments To Female Journalists. “There is also talk among Trump’s traveling press corps about his behavior toward women. Politico first reported that Lewandowski has made ‘sexually suggestive’ comments to female journalists that one recipient described as ‘completely inappropriate in a professional setting.’ 6

In conversations with reporters, he has expressed frustration with female journalists covering the campaign while also voicing a wish to have sex with them.” [Buzzfeed, 3/21/16]

Buzzfeed: Sources Said Lewandowski Called Female Reporters Late At Night To Come On To Them “Not Sounding Entirely Sober”. “In conversations with reporters, he has expressed frustration with female journalists covering the campaign while also voicing a wish to have sex with them. Some in the press corps joke that if Lewandowski is calling after a certain hour, women are better off not answering.” [Buzzfeed, 3/21/16]

Lewandowski Contemplated Suing BuzzFeed Over The Article

Trump’s Campaign Manager, Corey Lewandowski, Contemplating Suing Buzzfeed Over Article On His Potential Sexual Advances On Female Reporters. According to New York Magazine, “Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, is considering suing BuzzFeed over an article alleging that he made unwanted sexual advances toward female journalists covering the candidate — perhaps doing so under the influence of alcohol. ‘That’s a question for the attorneys,’ Lewandowski told me. ‘I’m not a public person. I told [BuzzFeed reporter] McKay Coppins that his story was inaccurate. I told him not to publish. And he chose to run the story anyway.’” [New York Magazine, 3/22/16]

Lewandowski Criticized BuzzFeed For Trusting An Anonymous Source Who Claimed He Made Sexual Advances While Under The Influence On Female Reporters. According to New York Magazine, “Coppins, whose story is co- bylined with BuzzFeed reporter Rosie Gray, reported that Lewandowski made ‘sexual comments about female journalists’ and that he called ‘women in the campaign press corps late at night to make unwanted romantic advances.’ ‘It’s all conjecture,’ Lewandowski said. ‘Oh, an anonymous source said I did X? Does that mean I can tweet out ‘Mr. Y has had inappropriate relationships with little boys’? Where is the line?’ BuzzFeed declined to comment on Lewandowski’s remarks.” [New York Magazine, 3/22/16]

 Trump Was Likely To Support His Campaign Manager’s Lawsuit Against BuzzFeed, As He Is A Frequent Critic Of Journalists. According to New York Magazine, “If Lewandowski chooses to move forward with a suit, he’s working for a candidate who likely won’t object. Trump has a history of suing journalists and likes to call reporters ‘disgusting.’ At a press conference in February, Trump said his administration would look into ‘opening up libel laws’ to punish unfriendly news organizations. ‘When they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles we can sue them and win lots of money,’ he said. ‘We’re going to have people sue you like you’ve never got sued before.’” [New York Magazine, 3/22/16]

In the video, posted by a CBS News reporter, a man who is identified as campaign manager Corey Lewandowski grabs a young protester by the collar. Trump's campaign pointed to another man in the video as having tugged the protester hard enough to jar him; the video is inconclusive on that point, though it clearly shows Lewandowski grabbing hold of the man's shirt. ” [Los Angeles Times, 3/19/16]

Reince Priebus: Lewandowski’s Actions Were “Certainly Not Something We Condone”. “Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday campaign officials should avoid ‘getting involved in confrontations.’ ‘Getting involved is not the answer. I think you leave these things up to the professionals. You've got professional police; you've got Secret Service,’ Priebus told CNN's Dana Bash on ‘State of the Union.’ ‘It's certainly not something that we would condone as far as the continuation of violence -- and it goes to both sides,’ he said. ‘It starts with agitators, and then people take matters into their own hands. We should be proud of our country, proud of our heritage and continue to be the greatest country in the world.’ Like his boss, Lewandowski isn’t subtle. His dog-whistle about ‘heritage’ and being ‘proud’ was heard loud and clear by the white supremacist underworld, which is rallying behind Trump.” [Poughkeepsie Journal, 9/4/15]

BORREGO SOLAR RELIED ON FEDERAL AND STATE TAX CREDITS TO GROW THEIR COMPANY

2008: Borrego Solar’s COO And Co-Owner Stated That The Company Relied On Federal And State Tax Credits To Offset The Costs Of Their Solar Electric Systems And Promote Company Growth. According to Lowell Sun, “Borrego Solar Systems Inc., a fast-growing designer and installer of solar electric power systems for commercial, residential and public sector clients, welcomed about 50 area dignitaries and others to its grand opening on 205 Industrial Ave. East yesterday. […] ‘We expect to double our growth every year through 2012,’ said Chief Operations Officer and co-owner Chris Anderson. […] Anderson explained that federal and state tax credits can go a long way toward offsetting the cost of installation, roughly $35,000 for a typical three-bedroom home in Massachusetts. Massachusetts offers a $2.25 tax rebate for each watt of power installed, with the typical system being for 4,000 watts (4 megawatts). That $9,000 in savings increases further with a $1,000 state tax credit and $2,000 federal tax incentives are included. Efforts to double the federal incentive have so far stalled, however.” [Lowell Sun, 6/24/08]

The Senate Finance Committee questioned why the director of the agency’s device division overruled ‘the comprehensive scientific evaluation of more than 20 FDA scientists, medical officers and management staff who reviewed Cyberonics’ application.’ An FDA spokesman defended the reversal, saying the agency weighed scientific data, staff concerns, the panel’s recommendation, the impact the therapy would have on people with no other options, and data tied to the device’s use for epilepsy.” [Star Tribune, 4/3/06]

Senator Grassley Investigated The FDA’s Decision To Approve Cyberonics Inc.’s VNS Therapy Device For Depression. According to Health Medical News, “Lawmakers should give the Food and Drug Administration the power to require additional studies from drug-makers after their products hit the market, according to a report released on Monday that found lingering safety problems at the agency. The Government Accountability Office said there is no clear process for the FDA to monitor already ap-proved products. ‘[…] The findings were released by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, who requested the report in late 2004 after Merck & Co. Inc. recalled arthritis pill Vioxx that was linked to heart problems. […] Grassley, an Iowa Republican, has investigated several agency decisions, including FDA’s approval of Cyberonics Inc.’s VNS Therapy device for depression as well as a controversial trial of Northfield Laboratories Inc.’s experimental blood product.” [Reuters Health Medical News, 4/24/06]

Grassley’s Investigation Revealed That The FDA Had Approved Cyberonic’s Device For Depression, Despite Its Own Internal Investigators Objections That It Lacked Scientific Standing

July 2005: FDA Officials Overruled The Objections Of their Own Staff Investigators To Approve Cyberonics Implants To Treat Depression. According to USA TODAY, “In July 1997, the FDA approved Cyberonics’ implants to treat a form of epilepsy. To date, that product has been implanted in more than 40,000 epilepsy patients. In July 2005, agency administrators overruled the objections of their own staff investigators to approve the implants to treat depression, as well. The device has been implanted in about 1,600 depression patients, many of them during company-paid clinical trials. Cyberonics estimates as many as 4 million severely depressed Americans could benefit from the product, a U.S. patient base 20 times larger than its potential U.S. epilepsy patient base. First, the company must persuade Medicare to pay for the procedure for depression, as it does for epilepsy.” [USA TODAY, 11/21/06]

The FDA Medical Officer That Approved Cyberonics Device For Depression Had Overruled The “Unanimous Opinion” Of His Scientific Staff. According to Medical Device Week, “A top federal medical official overruled the unanimous opinion of his scientific staff when he decided last year to approve a pacemaker-like device to treat persistent depression, a Senate committee report charged last week. The report charged that the device, the surgically implanted Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) system made by Cyberonics (Houston), had not proved effective against depression in its only clinical trial for treatment of that illness. As a result, scientists at the FDA repeatedly and unanimously recommended rejecting the application of the company to sell it as such a treatment, said the report, written by the staff of the Senate Finance Committee.” [Medical Device Week, 2/21/06]

Cyberonics’ Device Had Been Approved For Epilepsy In 1997, But 2004 Clinical Trial Data The FDA Considered In 2004, Did Not Show That It Worked For Depression. According to , “Cyberonics’ implant, a battery-powered, pacemakerlike device that stimulates the vagus nerve just below the neck, has been used widely since 1997 as an F.D.A.-approved treatment for epilepsy. But the clinical trial data the F.D.A. considered in 2004 did not show conclusively that VNS Therapy, as the treatment is called, was effective for severe depression when compared with patients who had a device implanted but no power turned on. [Cyberonics Chairman and Chief Executive] Mr. Cummins bitterly criticized the agency at the time. Through a combination of lobbying and additional data, Cyberonics got the F.D.A. to reverse its stance, with conditions, in February 2005. It received final approval last July to market VNS Therapy for depression, but not before the controversy led to an inquiry by the Senate Finance Committee into the tangled process. Since then, Mr. Cummins has spent much of his time battling insurers who label the therapy experimental and who are hesitant to pay for it as a depression treatment.” [New York Times, 6/9/06]

Senator Grassley Questioned Whether Medicaid And Medicare Dollars Were Being Put To Good Use On Purchasing The Device For Depression

February 2006: Senator Grassley Called Into Question The FDA’s Approval Of Cyberonic’s VNS Therapy System For Depression, And Questioned Whether Medicare And Medicaid Dollars Were Being Properly Spent On The $25,000 Device. According to Medical Device Week, “Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), the Senate Finance Committee chairman and an outspoken critic of the FDA, questioned the product’s approval Thursday during a speech on the Senate floor. ‘I am greatly concerned the FDA standard for approval may not have been met here, and if that’s the case it raises further difficult questions about whether Medicare or Medicaid dollars should be used to pay for this device now,’ he said. Grassley, whose committee oversees the Medicaid and Medicare healthcare programs, said he worried the device may not meet the usual FDA criteria for safety and effectiveness. He also said that the agency should have made the internal dissent public. ‘The FDA has limited the kind and quality of information publicly available to patients and their doctors and deprived them of information that may be relevant to their own risk-benefit analysis,’ the report said. In its conclusion, the report also said that the level of scientific dissent within the FDA regarding the effec-tiveness of the VNS therapy system raises concerns about the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for a $25,000 device.” [Medical Device Week, 2/21/06]

Senator Grassley On The FDA’s Approval Of Cyberonic’s Device: “I Am Greatly Concerned That The Food And Drug Administration Standard For Approval May Not Have Been Met Here.” According to The Houston Chronicle, “Cyberonics shares dropped Friday after a Senate panel questioned the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the Houston firm’s implantable device for treating severe depression. The Senate Finance Committee issued a report Thursday challenging the FDA’s decision last July to ap-prove use of Cyberonics’ Vagus Nerve Stimulator for patients suffering chronic or ‘treatment-resistant’ depression. ‘I am greatly concerned that the Food and Drug Administration standard for approval may not have been met here,’ Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said on the Senate floor Thursday. Cyberonics Chief Executive Officer Robert ‘Skip’ Cummins quickly fired back, saying the committee ‘issued a report without having interviewed world renowned experts’ on treatment-resistant depression.” [Houston Chronicle, 2/18/06]

A WATCHDOG GROUP PUBLIC CITIZEN ALSO CALLED FOR U.S. REGULATORS TO PULL CYBERONICS VNS REGULATOR FROM THE MARKETS AND STOP MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PAYMENTS FOR IT.

Public Citizen Called For U.S. Regulators To Pull Cyberonic’s Electronic Stimulator Device From The Market And Called On The Centers For Medicare And Medicaid Services To Not Reimburse For The VNS System. According to Medical Device Week, “Watchdog group Public Citizen (Washington) has called for U.S. regulators to pull Cyberonics’ (Houston) depression treatment from the U.S. market, claiming the company has not proven that the electronic stimulator device is effective. The group urged the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS;Baltimore) not to reimburse for the surgically implanted Vagus NerveStimulation (VNS) electronic device in the treatment of severe depression because it charges that the therapy is ‘ineffective.’ Public Citizen said it is apparently the first to seek a National Coverage Determination denying reimbursement under Medicare. The consumer group also is filing a petition with the FDA urging the reversal of its July 2005 approval of VNS for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) (Medical Device Daily, July 19, 2005).” [Medical Device Week, 9/8/06]

2012: LEWANDOWSKI RAN FAILED INCENDIARY SLASH-AND-BURN TREASURER CAMPAIGN FOR NON-PARTISAN LOCAL ELECTION FOR WINDHAM TOWN TREASURER

New York Times: Windham’s Local Ballots Did Not Include Party Affiliations; “Town Meetings Tended To Be Genteel”. “His style was also jarring to some in Windham, where town meetings tended to be genteel. Local ballots do not include party affiliations, and the most debated issues over the last several years included building a new $50 million high school and which roads should be plowed at the town’s expense. ‘Most of us just don’t really bring things forward in such a partisan manner,’ said Kathleen DiFruscia, a Democrat and a former selectman, adding, ‘It’s still a small town in many ways, where we know each other.’” [New York Times, 4/14/16]

 New York Times: Windham Voters “Did Not Embrace” Lewandowski’s Style. “Voters did not embrace his style, either. The incumbent treasurer, who was planning to retire, ran again to stop Mr. Lewandowski from winning the post and soundly defeated him, 1,941 votes to 714.” [New York Times, 4/14/16]

2012: Lewandowski “Scolded” Elected Officials For Cost Incurred During 2012 Campaign Visit By President Obama. “But it was in Windham, a well-off suburb of 13,800 people north of Boston, that Mr. Lewandowski honed his insurgent style of politics, making himself the town’s most outspoken watchdog and agitator. He scolded elected officials who he believed had lost their way, once reading some of their tax bills aloud as he criticized the costs of a 2012 campaign visit by President Obama. He used open records laws to unearth the emails of Mr. McLeod, a Democrat. He conducted his own audit of Windham’s finances going back five years.” [New York Times, 4/14/16]

2012: Lewandowski Announced Run For Windham Town Treasurer Against Incumbent Saying If People Of Windham Understood Where Their Money Was Going, “There Would Be A Revolt”. “Last year, he was also the first to initiate and execute a town-wide audit. After assessing a decade worth of spending, he presented recommendations to the town. ‘I started to look some more at it and said jeez, where's the town treasurer in all of this?,’ said Lewandowski. He went on to say that if people fully understood where their money was going, ‘there would be a revolt in town.’ […] The position is one of 14 elected official openings in 2012. Bob Skinner, who currently serves as treasurer, has finished his three-year term. There is no word yet whether Skinner will run for reelection, but Lewandowski said that should Skinner contest, he would gladly welcome a debate at town hall.” [Patch, Windham, 1/19/12]

The Retiring Town Treasurer Decided To Come Out Of Retirement Successfully Prevent Lewandowski From Winning The Position

New York Times: Retiring Town Treasurer Decided To Run Again “To Stop Mr. Lewandowski From Winning The Post”; Won Election 1,941 Votes To 714. “Voters did not embrace his style, either. While Working As Bob Ney’s Chief Of Staff, Lewandowski Brought A Gun Into The House Office Building; Then Later Sued, Claiming That He Had Been Denied Due Process When His Gun Was Taken Away. According to The New York Times, “After the election, Mr. Lewandowski went to work in Washington as Mr. Ney’s chief of staff, and made headlines when he brought an unloaded gun into a House office building in the bottom of his laundry bag. He was charged with a misdemeanor. He said it was an accident, and his lawsuit, charging that he had been denied due process when his gun was taken away, was thrown out by a judge.” [New York Times, 9/4/15]

1999: Lewandowski Brought A Gun And Ammunition Into The Longworth House Office Building. According to Politico.com, “But Lewandowski has already evaded jail once, after being arrested in 1999 for carrying an unloaded gun and

Racist Attacks

LEWANDOWSKI ENGAGED IN RACIST ATTACKS WHILE MANAGING BOB SMITH’S CAMPAIGN FOR RE-ELECTION

2002: Lewandowski Worked For New Hampshire Senator Bob Smith’s Campaign. According to Politico, “In February 1999, New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith launched a long-shot bid for the Republican nomination, irking the local GOP, which worried he could catch on in his home state and make the first-in-the-nation primary irrelevant by discouraging other candidates from campaigning there. As it turned out, Smith didn’t catch on anywhere, so he left the party in July to seek the nomination of the Taxpayers’ Party, before disavowing that party, too, and running as an independent. That lasted until Rhode Island Sen. John Chafee died in October, when Smith dropped out of the race and repledged his fealty to the Republican Party so that he could inherit Chafee’s chairmanship of the Environment and Public Works Committee. The Republican Party was ready for Smith to retire at the end of his term, but he sought reelection in 2002, recruiting Lewandowski from the RNC to manage his campaign. Several of Smith’s GOP Senate colleagues took the unusual step of endorsing his primary opponent, then-Rep. John E. Sununu, the son of the state’s former governor, who won the primary and the seat, putting it safely back in the hands of the country club Republicans. By his association with the ousted senator, Lewandowski had burned bridges with the party, said Cullen.” [Politico, 7/22/15]

With Lewandowski’s Help, Smith’s Campaign Played Off Of Opponents Sununu’s Arab-American Heritage To Suggest He Was Anti-Semitic

In A GOP Primary Race Between John Sununu And Bob Smith, Rumors Circulated That Sununu, An Arab- American, Was Anti-Israel. According to , “The Arab card has been thrown down on the table in the race for Senate in New Hampshire. Rep. John E. Sununu has been the subject of accusations - some of them made anonymously, some of them made openly by his GOP rival’s campaign - that the Arab-American congressman is anti-Israel and soft on terrorism. The allegations could be just the start of a dirty, expensive and high-stakes campaign for the historically Republican Senate seat, now held by Bob Smith.” [Associated Press, 3/4/02]

Bob Smith Never Openly Questioned Sununu’s Race, But Reportedly Circulated Rumors About His “Pro-Arab” Stances. According to Associated Press, “Smith has never been quoted referring to Sununu’s ethnicity, but questions about terrorism and the con-gressman’s Lebanese and Palestinian heritage surfaced last fall in a flurry of news reports. Among them was a New Republic story that identified Sununu as the only ethnic Palestinian in Congress and quoted an unidentified Smith adviser as saying of Sununu: ‘People are just beginning to focus on how pro-Arab he is and how naive his positions are on the terrorism issue.’ Smith spokeswoman Lisa Harrison said the senator’s staff was never contacted about the story and would never make an issue of a candidate’s ethnic background -” [Associated Press, 3/4/02]

Lewandowski Circulated Rumors And A Fact Sheet That Painted Smith’s Primary Opponent John Sununu As Anti- Semitic. According to The Guardian, “He followed that attack by touting a visit that the then former Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu made to New Hampshire, telling the Boston Globe ‘Mr Netanyahu knows that Senator Smith has been a supporter of Israel and Congressman Sununu has never been a supporter of Israel. He’s consistently voted against Israel. I think that was part of the impetus for Mr Netanyahu wanting to come up and campaign for Bob Smith.’ Lewandowski later backtracked and said that Netanyahu’s 2001 speech was not intended to be a campaign event. Smith supporters also circulated fact sheets painting Sununu as ‘anti-Israel’.” [Guardian, 8/20/15]

Lewandowski Attacked Sununu For Having Ties To Muslim And Arab Advocate Groups.

Lewandowski Attacked Sununu For Attending A Fundraiser Attended By Ziad Asali, President Of The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. According to Associated Press, “In December, Sununu went to a fund-raiser attended by Ziad Asali, president of the American-Arab An-ti-Discrimination Committee. Following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Asali said Osama bin Laden may be posing as a champion to some Muslims because he had seized on ‘legitimate grievances deeply felt in the Arab and Islamic world.’ Asali also contributed $1,000 to Sununu in December. ‘If that is the type of person Congressman Sununu feels should be contributing to his campaign, then I think that may call into question his views on terrorism,’ Lewandowski told the AP.” [Associated Press, 3/4/02]

Lewandowski Lead An Attack Against Smith’s Primary Opponent John Sununu, An Arab-American, In Which He Suggested Sununu Was Anti-Semitic Because One Of His Donors Previously Worked For The Holy Land Foundation, A Group With Ties To . According to The Guardian, “Sununu immediately became the favorite in the GOP primary when he entered the race and his strength immediately led to what Cullen called ‘the Arab incident’ in a campaign he described as a ‘burn the boats, blow up the bridges kind of primary’. Lewandowski, who was not available to comment to the Guardian, attacked Sununu, an Arab-American, for accepting a contribution from a Republican donor who had previously served as a lawyer for the Holy Land Foundation, a group with ties to Hamas. He told reporters: ‘The people of New Hampshire want someone in the US Senate with clear, concise views on terrorism. They’ll judge a congressman based on the people he associates with, his voting record and his campaign contributions.’ The statement was viewed as a dog whistle for accusations of and drew condemnations from Abe Foxman of the Anti Defamation League as well as from the former New Hampshire Republican senator , who described it as ‘character assassination and guilt by association’.” [Guardian, 8/20/15]

Lewandowski Falsely Claimed That Israel’s Prime Minister Campaigned For Bob Smith

Lewandowski Falsely Claimed That Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Campaigned For Bob Smith Because He Knew That Congressman Sununu Was Not A Supporter Of Israel. According to Associated Press, “Still, Smith’s campaign director, Corey Lewandowski, has repeatedly questioned Sununu’s commitment to Israel and the fight against terrorism. In November, former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited New Hampshire at Smith’s invitation. Lewandowski told The Boston Globe last month: ‘Mr. Netanyahu knows that Senator Smith has been a supporter of Israel and Congressman Sununu has never been a supporter of Israel. He’s consistently voted against Israel. I think that was part of the impetus for Mr. Netanyahu wanting to come up and campaign for Bob Smith.’ Later, Lewandowski told The Associated Press the Globe misquoted him, then said he misspoke in the interview. He said Netanyahu’s visit was not a campaign event or intended to highlight differences be-tween Smith and Sununu on Israel.” [Associated Press, 3/4/02]

Defender Of Corruption

2006: LEWANDOWSKI WROTE A LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR CORRUPT FORMER BOSS BOB NEY WHO WAS CONVICTED ON CORRUPTION CHARGES IN THE ABRAMOFF SCANDAL

Lewandowski Wrote Letter Defending Ney Of Corruption Charges, Called Him “Surrogate Father”

After Bob Ney Was Convicted Of Corruption Charges In The Abramoff Scandal In 2006, Lewandowski Wrote A Letter To The Court Defending Him. According to The New York Times, “After Mr. Ney was convicted of corruption charges in the Abramoff scandal and forced to resign in 2006, Mr. Lewandowski wrote a letter to the court defending him. ‘I know the true Bob Ney,’ Mr. Lewandowski wrote. Years later, Mr. Ney said, his parents still ask about Mr. Lewandowski, who was seen as a member of their family.” [New York Times, 9/4/15]

Lewandowski Referred To Ney As A “Surrogate Father” In His Letter To The Court. According to Politico.com, “Lewandowski’s charges were dismissed (which is more than can be said for Ney, who went to prison on federal corruption charges in 2007 over his entanglement with the disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, despite a letter to the judge from Lewandowski calling Ney a ‘surrogate father’).” [Politico.com, 8/17/15] 14

Lewandowski Noted That He “Spent 20 Hours A Day With Bob, Seven Days A Week For Over Three Years.” According to , “Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s campaign manager, launched his career in Washington politics as an aide to Representative Bob Ney, best known for his involvement with Abramoff. And just weeks before Ney was sentenced to prison on federal corruption charges in 2007, Lewandowski was pleading for leniency for his old boss, praising him as a ‘consummate professional.’ ‘I had the privilege of spending 20 hours a day with Bob seven days a week for over three years,’ Lewandowski wrote in a letter to Judge Ellen S. Huvelle, who presided over Ney’s trial. ‘In that time, I learned more about life, people, politics, friendships [sic] and the importance of family than I ever could have imagined. Bob served as a mentor to me, as a surrogate father, and as a best friend [sic] all in one.” [Daily Beast, 8/3/15]

Lewandowski Previously Served As Ney’s Deputy Chief Of Staff In The House

1998: Corey Lewandowski Served As Representative Bob Ney’s Deputy Chief Of Staff. According to CNN, “HINOJOSA: And Congressman Bob Ney is already reaching out to constituents in whatever ways he can. CALLER: And if President Clinton didn’t do the things that he did, we wouldn’t be in this position right now. HINOJOSA: A moderate Republican in a majority Democratic district, Ney is known to be a quick decision maker, but not when it comes to deciding the presidents fate. REP. ROBERT NEY, (R) OHIO: This is one issue that I just couldn’t in good conscience take a quick expedient political route out of it. COREY LEWANDOWSKI, NEY’S DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF: Nothing, since I’ve known him, has he contemplated more than this decision. He has asked everyone he’s run into what they think. HINOJOSA: Including these future voters.” [CNN, 12/12/98]
