    Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association (SPLKA) Volunteer Keepers’ Handbook Mission: The purpose of SPLKA is to restore and preserve Big and Little Sable Lighthouses and the Ludington North Breakwater Light, provide educa- tion to the public about the lights, and to allow the public the opportunity to climb the towers. Volun- teers are our strength and are encouraged to play active roles in our program. In 2012, SPLKA will partner with Fruitland Township and Friends of White River Light Station to operate White River Light Station in Whitehall, as well. Introduction SPLKA links the interpretive history of our three light stations: Big Sable Point Lighthouse, Ludington North Breakwater Light, and Little Sable Point Lighthouse. Together, these lights span a forty mile stretch of Lake Michigan coastline. Both Big Sable and Little Sable are operated by SPLKA under concession agreements (similar to a lease) with the State of Michigan. After receiving the board’s consent, we began negotiations with Fruitland Township and the Friends of the White River Light Station to take over day-to-day operations at the light. Our Annual Meeting Details 7 potential partnership would include gaining the asset of the long-time Curator of White River Light Station, Karen McDonnell, and her expertise of 29 years. Little Sable Point 7 Built by Captain William Robinson in 1875, this charming light will make Events at the Light our fourth lighthouse charge within a fifty-five mile stretch of Lake Michigan Recreation Passport 7 shoreline. An exquisite example of its nautical history, this light also serves as one of the finest maritime museums on the eastern shore, featuring a highly impressive U.S.L.S. collection that some say is, ―the finest in the Midwest!‖ Keeper’s Log 8 All three parties involved have come to an initial agreement, and SPLKA has retained an attorney to represent its interests in this merger. SPLKA has also offered to fund the WRLS gift shop and to retain its revenues this year, creating Big Sable Point 8 a transitional partnership with the Township.

    MAY • JUNE, 1997 Volume XLV; Number 3 TELESCOPE Page 58 MEMBERSHIP NOTES- There are two new videos produced by Mark Howell now available in the museum gift shop. Building, the Mighty Mac details the construction of the Mackinac Bridge in the mid-1950's. Many people doubted that a bridge could be built across the Straits of Mackinac to connect the two peninsulas. In a little over 3-1/2 years the five-mile suspension bridge was completed. The documentary includes rare archival 16mm color footage with interviews with Dr. Steinman and others that made the bridge a reality. There is a short story on the carferries that once sailed across the Straits. When the Mackinac Bridge was opened in 1957, the ferries discontinued service shortly afterwards and were sold. The other video The Milwaukee Clipper: Should We Scrap A Great Lakes Legend? details the history of the passenger ship S.S. Juniata, which was later converted to the Milwaukee Clipper. As a bonus, a short promotional clip is included titled "Clipper Holiday", which shows the Clipper underway to Lake Michigan ports. Both videos retail for $29.95 each and those ordering by mail should include $3.50 for postage and handling.     Sable Point Lighthouses Big Sable Point Lighthouse Big Sable Point Lighthouse is located nine miles north of Ludington in Ludington State Park. It is a 1.8 mile walk to the lighthouse from the state park. In 1855 twelve ships wrecked between Big Sable Point and the city of Ludington, and forty-eight lives were lost. Charles Mears, a senator from Ludington, Michigan, began to ask Congress for money to build a lighthouse at Big Sable Point so ships on Lake Michigan could navigate around the point as they traveled. Finally, on July 28, 1866, Congress budgeted $35,000 to build a lighthouse at Big Sable Point. The 112-foot tower was built with Milwaukee cream brick and had walls that were five feet thick at the base of the tower and two feet thick at the top. A Third Order Fresnel lens was installed in the tower. It wasn’t long after the tower was built that the brick began to crumble. It was decided to install steel cladding or plates around the light tower. The plates were made at the Milwaukee Lighthouse Depot and brought across the lake on lighthouse tenders, or flat boats. When the steel cladding was installed around the brick tower, cement was poured between the bricks and the steel cladding adding to the thickness of the walls. One of the characteristics of a lighthouse is its visual appearance in the daytime, which is known as its “day-mark.” Mariners had complained they could not see the Big Sable Point tower during the daylight hours because the cream-colored brick looked too much like sand.

    Michigan 2019 by John Kennington In January 2019 I had a great trip to Michigan. I first hit Chicago, then many of the light houses on the eastern shore of Lake Michagan. Unfortunately, I was a few weeks too early for the famous "ice lights" which appeared a few weeks lat- er due to the Polar Vortex! Next up were railroad shoots in Owosso and Flint, and finally a Rosie the Riveter shoot at the Yankee Air Museum near Ann Arbor. In January 2019 I had a great trip to Michigan. I first hit Chicago, then many of the light houses on the eastern shore of Lake Michagan. Unfortunately, I was a few weeks too early for the famous "ice lights" which appears a few weeks later due to the Polar Vortex! Next up were railroad shoots in Owosso and Flint, and finally a Rosie the Riveter shoot near Ann Arbor. Dawn at Chicago's North Avenue Beach I was planning on a sunrise shot in Chicago, and it just happened to be the Sunday of the Bears' playoff game. My first choice of location, near Soldier Field, was closed off for security, even at 5:00 a.m. But North Avenue Beach turned out okay! The Bears losing after the "double doinks" were karma for them keeping me away! Sunrise From Chicago's North Avenue Pier I next walked out the North Avenue Pier at sunrise, and had about 3 minutes of the sun hitting the buildings, then it was gone behind the clouds for rest of the day.
