Introduction Kakatiyas- an indigenous Telugu dynasty ruled over the Andhradesa consisting of modern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh from 10th century AD to the first quarter of 14th century AD. The name ‘Kakatiya’ is derived from goddess Kakati- a mother goddess Durga, venerated by the dynasty. Gunadya Rashtrakuta was the first known personality of the Kakatiya clan. Kakatiyas then became the feudatories or samanthas of Kalyana Chalukyans. The Kakatiya rulers Beta I (AD 996–1051), Prola I (AD 1052–1076), Beta II (AD 1076–1108), Durgaraja (AD 1108–1116) and Prola II (AD 1116– 1157) served the Kalyana Chalukyas until the collapse of Chalukya empire during Tailapa III’s reign.

    Historical Places near Warangal Warangal is recognized as one of the best heritage cities of India. It is 145 km away from the state capital Hyderabad. It is also the second largest city in the state of Telangana. The city's name is derived from the Telugu word Orugallu; 'Oru' which means one and the word 'gallu' meaning stone. The city was the capital of the great Kakatiya rulers who reigned between 12th and 14th centuries. Thousand Pillar Temple: Many Hindu temples were developed under the patronage of Ganapati Deva, Rudrama Devi and Prataparudra who were of Kakatiya dynasty. The Thousand Pillar Temple was believed to be constructed during the period between 1175-1324 CE by order of the king, Rudra Deva. It stands out to be a masterpiece and achieved major heights in terms of architectural skills by the ancient Kakatiya vishwakarma sthapathis. Bhadrakali Temple: The temple is believed to be built in 625 A.D by the King Pulakeshin II of Chalukya dynasty to commemorate his victory over Vengi region of Andhra Desham, as per the writings on the temple wall. Kakatiya kings later have adopted the temple and considered Goddess Bhadrakali as their "Kula Devatha". A lake was also built by Ganapatideva adjacent to the temple. Due to the fall of Kakatiya dynasty to the Muslim rulers of Delhi, the temple lost its prominence. In 1950, the temple was renovated by Sri Ganapathi Sastri a devi upasaka along with the help of a local merchant and other affluent locals.     Kakatiya Ramappa Temple declared a World Heritage site July 26, 2021 In news- Telangana’s Kakatiya Rudreswara Temple (also known as the Ramalingeshwara or Ramappa Temple) has been given a world heritage site tag by UNESCO. The decision was taken at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, held in Fuzhou, China. Key updates- The temple is located in Palmapet in Mulugu. The temple was constructed in 1213 AD during the reign of the Kakatiya Empire by Recharla Rudra, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. The presiding deity here is Ramalingeswara Swamy. It is also known as the Ramappa temple, after the sculptor who executed the work in the temple for 40 years. It is the only temple that has been named after its sculptor. The temple stands on a 6 feet high star-shaped platform with walls, pillars and ceilings adorned with intricate carvings that attest to the unique skill of the Kakatiyan sculptors. The distinct style of Kakatiyas for the gateways to temple complexes, unique only to this region, confirm the highly evolved proportions of aesthetics in temple and town gateways in South India.     Genealogies of the Citizen-Devotee: Popular Cinema, Religion and Politics in South India Uma Maheswari Bhrugubanda Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree Of Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Uma Maheswari Bhrugubanda All Rights Reserved Abstract Genealogies of the Citizen-Devotee: Popular Cinema, Religion and Politics in South India Uma Maheswari Bhrugubanda This dissertation is a genealogical study of the intersections between popular cinema, popular religion and politics in South India. It proceeds with a particular focus on the discursive field of Telugu cinema as well as religion and politics in the state of Andhra Pradesh from roughly the 1950s to the 2000s. Telugu cinema continued to produce mythological and devotional films based mostly on Hindu myths and legends many decades after they ceased to be major genres in Hindi and many other Indian languages. This was initially seen simply as an example of the insufficiently modernized and secularized nature of the South Indian public, and of the enduring nature of Indian religiosity. However, these films acquired an even greater notoriety later. In 1982, N.T. Rama Rao, a film star who starred in the roles of Hindu gods like Rama and Krishna in many mythologicals set up a political party, contested and won elections, and became the Chief Minister of the state, all in the space of a year. For many political and social commentators this whirlwind success could only be explained by the power of his cinematic image as god and hero! The films thus came to be seen as major contributing factors in the unusual and undesirable alliance between cinema, religion and politics.
