Background Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) has started its journey in 1988 with a noble vision to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalized people. Being a peoples' centered organization, we envisioned for a society which will be free from inequality and injustice, a society where no child will cry from hunger and no life will be ruined by poverty. Over the last thirty years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to facilitate the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, we have adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound effective services especially to the poor and disadvantaged people. Taking into account the government development policies, we are currently implementing a considerable number of projects and programs including micro-finance program through a community focused and people centered approach to accomplish government’s development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN as a whole.

  • Russell's Viper (Daboia Russelii) in Bangladesh: Its Boom and Threat To
    J. Asiat. Soc. Bangladesh, Sci. 44(1): 15-22, June 2018 RUSSELL’S VIPER (DABOIA RUSSELII) IN BANGLADESH: ITS BOOM AND THREAT TO HUMAN LIFE MD. FARID AHSAN1* AND MD. ABU SAEED2 1Department of Zoology, University of Chittagong, Chittagong, Bangladesh 2 555, Kazipara, Mirpur, Dhaka-1216, Bangladesh Abstract The occurrence of Russell’s viper (Daboia russelii Shaw and Nodder 1797) in Bangladesh is century old information and its rarity was known to the wildlife biologists till 2013 but its recent booming is also causing a major threat to human life in the area. Recently it has been reported from nine districts (Dinajpur, Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Rajbari, Chuadanga and Patuakhali) and old records revealed 11 districts (Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Chapai Nawabganj, Rajshahi, Bogra, Jessore, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat and Chittagong). Thus altogether 17 out of 64 districts in Bangladesh, of which Chapai Nawabganj and Rajshahi are most affected and 20 people died due to Russell’s viper bite during 2013 to 2016. Its past and present distribution in Bangladesh and death toll of its bites have been discussed. Its booming causes have also been predicted and precautions have been recommended. Research on Russell’s viper is deemed necessary due to reemergence in deadly manner. Key words: Russell’s viper, Daboia russelii, Distribution, Boom, Panic, Death toll Introduction Two species of Russell’s viper are known to occur in this universe of which Daboia russelii (Shaw and Nodder 1797) is distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka (www.reptile.data-base.org); while Daboia siamensis (Smith 1917) occurs in China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Cambodia (Wogan 2012).

  • Of Kolkata: Refugee Lives In-Between Town and Country
Land and Labour at the ‘Borders’ of Kolkata: Refugee Lives in-between Town and Country Himadri Chatterjee [6th Critical Studies Conference – MCRG] I. Introduction My field-work in the settlements of Namasudra1 refugees; at the edge of the city of Kolkata, had begun in late 2011, at a protest site in front of Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. A group of 20 dalit refugee activists and a support team from ‘Joint Action Committee for Bengali Refugees’ led by Sukriti Ranjan Biswas had arrived at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 28th November, to start an indefinite hunger strike demanding repealment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2003. This amendment has made it difficult for post- 1971 migrants from Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) to gain citizenship in India by adding a clause defining an illegal immigrant and by disenfranchising family members born on Indian soil after migration2. Over the next week I witnessed their unsuccessful negotiations with several Congress leaders, including V. Narayanasamy and K. C Singh Baba. Through the first three days leaders from the Communist parties, Bharatiya Janata Party, Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Hind and Lok Janshakti party came to visit the tent periodically. There were no concrete outcomes from the strike. After several insipid promises from MPs to bring up the issue in the parliament, the activists decided to wrap up the agitation. The hunger strike came to a rather dissatisfactory end in the evening of the fourth day when Baba visited the protester’s tent and requested the leaders to discontinue the strike. Several of the activists were rather disheartened by their near invisibility in the theater of so many protests.

  • A Case Study in Nadia District of West Bengal
INTERNATIONALJOURNAL OF MULTIDISCIPLINARYEDUCATIONALRESEARCH ISSN:2277-7881; IMPACT FACTOR :6.514(2020); IC VALUE:5.16; ISI VALUE:2.286 Peer Reviewed and Refereed Journal: VOLUME:10, ISSUE:1(6), January :2021 Online Copy Available: www.ijmer.in IMPACT OF REFUGEE: A CASE STUDY IN NADIA DISTRICT OF WEST BENGAL Alok Kumar Biswas Assistant Professor, Department of History Vivekananda College, Madhyamgram, Kolkata Nadia or ‘Naudia’ is famous for its literature, cultural heritage, and historical importance and after all partition and change its demographic features. Brahmin Pandits were associated with intellectual literature discuss knowledge, to do religious oblation and worship. The city was fully surrounded by dense bamboo and marsh forest and tigers, wild pigs, foxes etc used live in this forest. This was the picture of Nadia during the end of 18th century.i There was a well-known rhyme- “Bamboo, box and pond, three beauties of Nadia”. Here ‘Nad’ means Nadia or Nabadwip.ii This district was established in 1786. During the partition, Nadia district was also divided. However, according to Lord Mountbatten’s plan 1947 during partition of India the whole Nadia district was attached with earlier East Pakistan. This creates a lot of controversy. To solve this situation the responsibility was given to Sir Radcliff According to his decision three subdivisions of Nadia district (Kusthia, Meherpur and Chuadanga) got attached with East Pakistan on 18th August, naming Kusthia district and the remaining two sub-divisions (Krishnagar and Ranaghat) centered into India with the name Nabadwip earlier which is now called Nadia. While studying the history of self-governing rule of Ndai district one can see that six municipalities had been established long before independence.
