NEWSLETTER AND ANNUAL REPORT WINTER 2005 S SPECTIVE R E FOUNDATION 1 P MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT D. DAVID CONKLIN t is my pleasure to present the 2004-2005 Dutchess ICommunity College Foundation Annual Report. Many exciting things have happened here at the College over the past academic year, and I am happy to share them with you. In 2002, the Dutchess Community College Foundation embarked on a Capital Campaign to raise $3.4 million dollars to endow four areas: scholarships, technology, facility and campus enhancements, and facul- ty program incentives. I am happy to let you know that the Foundation has met and surpassed its Campaign goal by more than 25 percent. I would like thank all of you in D. David Conklin the community who support the College and helped us achieve this success. The Campaign was entitled “Maintaining Excellence,” and our raising these funds will ensure that as the College moves into the future it will indeed be able to maintain the excellence of its educational offerings. In addition, the College received national recognition for the student referendum to donate to the Campaign, initiated by Foundation Executive Director, Patricia Prunty. Academically, the College continues to grow. For the fall 2004 semester, four new academic programs were added to the curriculum and in the fall of 2005, we began another new degree program, Aviation – Pilot Training, and this spring, we added a General Studies Associate in Science degree. I have every confidence that these programs will be equally as successful. A full-tuition scholarship, The President’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence, created for Dutchess County students who graduated in the top ten percent of their high school class has been renamed, thanks to a local business leader and his wife. -

Welcome to My World: Researching the Role of Personal Narrative and Affective Presence at Graceland Mariruth Leftwich Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the regulations of the Institute of Education, University of London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute of Education, Faculty of Children and Learning 2012 1 Thesis Abstract This study explores the visitor experience at one of the world's most famous historic houses, Graceland, Elvis Presley's home. The research methodology prioritises the visitor's voice, examining the impact of the Graceland experience on visitor perception. Particular attention is paid to theories of personal narrative and affective presence as interpretive devices. Personal Meaning Maps from 170 visitors form the core data and provide evidence of the profound conceptual changes that occur in visitors' perceptions of Elvis. Visitors consistently describe Elvis as a 'real' person, with personal characteristics such as humility and generosity proving more memorable than his fame or career. The Graceland tour is designed for visitors to connect with Elvis in an affective manner, evoking emotions and relying on narratives of family and nostalgic discourses. This succeeds in providing visitors with an experience that challenges and extends their pre-visit views of Elvis as the 'King of Rock and Roll.' The ability to change visitor perception is linked to the quality of the experience, as Adams et al. (2003) suggests, 'the better the experience, the greater the change' (p. 22). The transformations documented at Graceland prompted investigation, searching for indicators of quality interpretation through analysis of the audio tour content and visitor photographs. This examination reveals a set of interpretive practices potentially useful for other historic properties, including the contextualising of space through personal accounts, the introduction of emotive media, and a reliance on a narrative that is personal rather than objective. -

The 1977 General Court Passed RSA 74:7A making it mandatory that the inventory be filled out and returned by April 15th each year. The penalty for failure to comply shall be one percent of the property tax bill. In no case will the penalty be less than ten dollars ($10.00) or more than fifty dollars ($50.00). The penalty will be added to the current year's tax bill. It is also mandatory that you file your inventory each year in order to receive your veterans exemption even if the permanent application is on file. Schanda who has been a selectman for many, many years in the Town of Newmarket. The first term that he served was in 1953 and the last term ended last March 1980. Although there was a break in service in the early 1960's, he spent the majority of the years from 1953 through 1980 in office. Frank, we appreciate the time you gave so graciously to the Town of Newmarket over the years.
