This study aimed to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on university students’ mental health and sleep in Saudi Arabia. Method: A total of 582 undergraduate students from Saudi Arabia aged between 18 and 45 years old (M = 20.91, SD = 3.17) completed a cross-sectional online questionnaire measuring depression, anxiety, stress, resilience, and insomnia during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020). Analysis included an independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Undergraduate students reported high levels of depression, anxiety, and perceived stress and low levels of resilience (p < 0.001) during the pandemic. In addition, students reported experiencing insomnia. Based on findings from previous studies during pandemics, the WHO recognized that imposing measures such as social distancing might increase anxiety, stress, and anger among individuals [7]. For example, increased levels of anxiety were significantly associated with several avoidance behaviors, such as international travel and visiting public places, during the outbreak in Jeddah, western Saudi Arabia [8]. To date, the impact of COVID-19 on university students’ mental health and sleep has been investigated in several countries including Bangladesh, China, U.S., Australia, and Canada. One study, which collected data using the event-specific distress scale, reported that 69.31% of university students in Bangladesh had a mild to severe level of psychological impact caused by the pandemic [9]. Specifically, home quarantine, the absence of physical exercise, uncertainty about the pandemic trajectory, lack of information, and fear of becoming infected with COVID-19 were determined as risk factors for mental health status among university students in Bangladesh [9]. Additionally, fear of the possibility to be infected and the perceived high risk of becoming infected were also identified to impact university students’ mental health in China [10]. Previous research has shown students who enrolled in the final year at university who had short sleep durations (<6 h per night) were more likely to experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and symptoms of depression among undergraduate students in China [11]. In France, the level of anxiety had increased among university students who did not relocate or move house to a rural area since the beginning of the quarantine period [12]. A study by Goodman, Wang, Guadrrama, and Santana (2020) [13] demonstrated that 60% of students living in the U.S. reported a negative impact of the pandemic on their mental health, while 90% of students were more anxious about finances. Sixty-two percent of students living in the U.S. met the clinical cut-off for depression, while (47%) students met the clinical for generalized anxiety [13]. Additionally, the risk of depression symptoms was three times higher between students who had confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases among relatives [14]. Australian university students reported 66.3% poorer well-being overall during the pandemic [15]. Age and gender have been identified as risk factors for poorer mental health outcomes during the pandemic. For example, the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder, symp- toms of depression and stress were significantly higher in younger adults than adults over 60 years old in Canada during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic [16]. In addition, previous stud- ies in numerous countries have revealed that females were at a high of risk having mental health conditions and sleep problems more than males. For instance, female Brazilian students aged between 11 and 19 years old have been reported to have more difficulties falling asleep due to worrying (45.1%) than their male student peers [17,18]. Analysis of focus group data conducted in Germany found that adolescent and young adult females (mean age 22.5 years old) have reported a higher prevalence of depression, and severity of symptoms of depression, than their male peers [19]. Similarly, female graduates (aged between 21 and 40 years old) in Japan reported higher levels of psychological distress, including anxiety, as measured by the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) when compared with male peers during the pandemic [20]. Learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia have been identified as risk factors for mental health conditions within university students. Prior to the pan- demic, Italian university students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia reported high depression scores and lower self-esteem and resilience [21]. Likewise, university students in Georgia aged between 18 and 25 years old who were diagnosed with dyslexia had higher anxiety and depressive symptoms than students who did not have learning difficulties [22]. Several studies have suggested that the prevalence of mental health problems in university students in Saudi Arabia was high prior to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Al Bahhawi et al. (2018) [23] found that 34.3% of university students at Jazan University in Saudi Arabia have experienced stress, 65.7% anxiety, and 53.6% have experienced moderate Int. J. Environ. Res. More empirical researches are need to examine the relationship between mindfulness-based interventions and mental health in China. The present study reports results from a quasi-experiment following a one-group repeated-measures design which investigated the impact of a standard 8-week mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) program in 81 Chinese undergraduates (14 males, 67 females, age 20.35 ± 1.35 years). Data was collected using the Symptom Check List 90 (SCL90) at baseline, week 3, week 6 and week 8 in order to examine the trajectory of mental health changes during the MBCT training. The repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the decrease was signifcant in the scores of somatization (F = 13.432, P < 0.01), obsessive–compulsive symptoms (F = 43.954, P < 0.01), interpersonal sensitivity (F = 36.196, P < 0.01), depression (F = 25.914, P < 0.01), anxiety (F = 26.547, P < 0.01), hostility (F = 19.707, P < 0.01), phobic anxiety (F = 21.145, P < 0.01), paranoid ideation (F = 19.857, P < 0.01) and psychoticism (F = 32.833, P < 0.01). The fndings from the present study show that a standard MBCT program may have positive impact on reduction in mental health problems in Chinese undergraduates.

Questioning the cultural appropriateness of applying Western theories in non-Western cultures has become more and more imperative and urgent. This article reflects on the cultural context of Western professional counseling and its internationalization and discusses possible harm and problems of practicing Western mental health counseling internationally. Based on observations of counseling development and research in China, the argument is made that lack of attention to the role of culture leads to harm. All professionals who are interested in being part of this internationalization movement need to adopt an international attitude, conduct sharing and learning through a dual-directional collaborative pathway and show a commitment to doing courageous work in de-constructing and re-constructing the science and practice of professional psychology for the global community. Only with proper and sufficient culturally informed effort, internationalization of mental health counseling can result in mutual enrichment and benefit all people in all cultures. An online survey was used to collect demographic data, assess students’ awareness of COVID-19, and assess depressive and anxiety symptoms with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaire, respectively. The prevalence of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and a combination of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 43.7%, 37.4%, and 31.3%, respectively, among Chinese high school students during the COVID-19 outbreak. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that female gender was the higher risk factor for depressive and anxiety symptoms. In terms of grades, senior high school was a risk factor for depressive and anxiety symptoms; the higher the grade, the greater the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms.

    Cross-cultural Medicine Psychiatry and Chinese Culture TSUNG-YI LIN, MD, FRCP(C), Vancouver, British Columbia When we examine the cultural characteristics that influence mental disorders and related behavior among the Chinese, no major differences are found between Chinese and other groups in the range of disorders or in overall prevalence. Several cultural factors influence the recognition and treatment of mental illness, among which are attitudes toward emotional display, somatic as opposed to psychogenic disorders and features of the traditional medical belief system in Chinese culture. The Chinese have a relatively favorable prognosis of schizophrenia, low rates of depressive illness, a strong tendency towards somatization and the presence of several unique culture-bound syndromes. From study- ing Chinese in Vancouver, it was found that they have a characteristic way of dealing with mental illness in the family, in that there is first a protracted period of intrafamilial coping with serious psychiatric illness, followed by recourse to friends, elders and neighbors in the community; third, consultation with traditiknal specialists, religious healers or general physicians; fourth, outpatient or inpatient treatment from specialists, and, finally, a pro- cess of rejection and scapegoating of the patient. The efficacy of Western psychiatric treatment of Chinese patients has yet to be objectively assessed. Adopting the propensity score matching (PSM) method, the present study tries to assess the treatment effects of religion on self-reported health status. The final sample from the 2007 Spiritual Life Study of Chinese Residents (SLSC) contains 6194 valid responses. The average treatment effects (ATEs) estimated by the PSM method show that respondents with religious affiliations are on average significantly more likely to report being very healthy by 5.2 percentage points (by 3.6 and 9.6 percentage points among Buddhists and Protestants), especially, by 16.2 percentage points among those regarding religion as being very important in their lives. Meanwhile, ATEs of religion on reporting being very happy is 17.0 among Protestants and 13.4 among those regarding religion with high importance and 11.3 among those with “regular religious attendance”. Pescosolido3* Abstract Background: In the wake of China’s massive economic development, attention has only recently turned to the enormous treatment gap that exists for mental health problems. Our study is the first comprehensive, national examination of the levels and correlates of the public’s ability to recognize mental illness in the community and suggest sources of help, setting a baseline to assess contemporary Chinese efforts. Methods: Data were collected in China as part of the Stigma in Global Context – Mental Health Study (SGC-MHS) through face-to-face interviews using vignettes meeting clinical criteria for schizophrenia and major depression. Our analysis targets the Han Chinese participants (n = 1812). Differences in the recognition of mental health problems were assessed using a chi-square test and further stratified by vignette illness type and urban vs. rural residence. Adjusted regression models estimated the effects of each predictor towards the endorsement three types of help- seeking: medical doctor, psychiatrist, and mental health professional. Results: As expected, recognition of mental health problems is low; it is better for depression and most accurate in urban areas. Perceived severity increases endorsement of the need for care and for treatment by all provider types.

This study sought to estimate the association between social support quality (SSQ) and mental health among Chinese college students using data yielding from a nationwide survey. Methods A cross-sectional study with a web-based questionnaire survey was conducted in Wuhan, China, from October 2017 to February 2018. A total of 11093 college students were recruited from 18 colleges or universities through multi-stage random cluster sampling method. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support scale and 12-items General Health Questionnaire were used to estimate students’ SSQ and mental health status, respectively.
