The proposed changes are due to electoral rules that say each councillor must represent 3247 res- idents, plus or minus 10 per cent (2922 – 3571). At present, both Cambridge (3920 residents) and Te Awamutu (3795 residents) wards are under represented and the two rural wards over represented (Kakepuku 1992 residents and Man- gatautari 2610 residents). The present Council has 12 councillors elected across fi ve wards, and a Mayor elected at large across the District. It is proposed that for the 2007 elections Cam- bridge and Te Awamutu will each have four coun- cillors, Pirongia two, with Maungatautari, and Kakepuku each having one. The existing Te Awamutu and Cambridge Com- munity Boards are being retained, although each will have one less member and members will be elected by ward for the fi rst time. Pirongia ward will continue to be represented by a standing committee of Council. The proposed representation arrangements are open for public consultation and, subject to the hearing of any submissions, will be confi rmed at the June Council meeting. 103TC014/06 101TC023/06

By Colin Thorsen From Yorkminster to Te Awamutu - the world acclaimed 47-strong New Zealand Male Choir is back to perform in concert at St John’s Anglican Church. Musical director, Angela Cresswell says she is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to perform for a second time in Te Awamutu on Friday, April 21 at 7.30pm. Ms Cresswell charmed the 200 in attend- ance, with her English humour, when she led The Northmen - the northern sector of the national choir - at the Bible Chapel in March, 2003. Since then, the full national choir has made four tours of New Zealand and one to the United Kingdom. The present tour is the fi rst in New Zealand since returning from the UK last year. There were many highlights on the trip to England, Wales and Ireland. The choir confi rmed their world class by placing fi fth overall out of 38 entries at the international Eisteddfod held in Wales. “It was a mighty achievement. We were up against choirs from throughout the world and Wales thought that we had pipped them for fourth,” says Ms Cresswell. “It was an exciting experience - a great way to represent your country.” IN HARMONY: Representatives of the New Zealand Male Choir, from second left, Wayne Peterson (president of tour organising The Kiwis got to sing in Yorkminster and committee), Angela Cresswell (choir musical director), Paul L’Hullier, Alan Worthing (both of Te Awamutu, organisers of local met Johnathon Hunt at New Zealand House, concert), with vicar George Allanson (left) and Wendy Bain (local soloist), familiarising themselves recently with the surrounds the tallest building in central London. and acoustics at St John’s Anglican Church. 103TC029-06 ownership and administration of Waikato Federated Farmers Charitable Trust. 1030610AD Te Awamutu District Federated Farmers build- ing in Carlton Street will be on ‘fi rmer footing’ with a transfer of ownership to Waikato Federated Farmers Charitable Trust. This move will provide a more substantial fi nan- cial base to further develop the building and place its administration under an organisation better geared to that function. Hybe Poot, chairman of the building trustees committee for Te Awamutu District Federated Farmers, says the complex issues of tenancy, new trust laws and day to day management of the building made it a logical move to accept the offer from Waikato. The proposal to transfer all building assets and liabilities to Waikato Federated Farmers Charita- ble Trust was passed by a special members vote at last Thursday’s AGM. It now goes to the Waikato meeting on April 27 for adoption, but that is regarded as a formality. Surplus funds generated by the building will be spread over the greater farming community of Waikato province. The building was constructed in the 1960s and for most of its life had an assured regular income, through tenancy by MAF and the Ministry of Po- lice Traffi c Department. But it was substantially damaged by fi re on Box- ing Day 2002. It was totally reconstructed through funding from insurance, trading funds savings and a small mortgage. The building became available for tenanting almost a year ago, but there have been issues at- tracting suitable tenants - ironically a honey prod- ucts company, Manuka Health NZ Ltd, signed up to occupy the whole ground fl oor on Monday. “We overcame the hurdles presented by the fi re, but it is now in the best interests of Te Awamutu district to put the building on a fi rmer base,” Mr Poot says. Community awards open The biggest celebration of volunteers is about to hit town, with nominations opening for the Trust- Power Waipa District Community Awards. The Awards, jointly run by TrustPower and Waipa District Council, aim to give recognition and reward to those voluntary groups and organisa- tions that make an outstanding contribution to the Waipa community. Since the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards began in 2001, more than 55 voluntary groups and organisations have received recogni- tion and fi nancial support through the Community Awards. This year, TrustPower will give away an- other $5,000 of prize money to the winning volun- tary groups. TrustPower community relations co-ordinator Rebecca James says last year a record breaking 44 nominations were received for the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards. “There are hundreds of voluntary groups and organisations working to make the Waipa District a better place to live and we want to see them cel- ebrated at this year’s Awards.” There are fi ve categories; Heritage and Environ- ment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/ Youth Development. Category winners receive $500 and runners-up $250, with the Supreme Win- ner taking home $1,500, a trophy and an all ex- penses paid trip to the 2006 TrustPower National Community Awards in Taupo next March. Kihikihi Waikato Eventing, winners of the 2005 TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards, was named the Supreme Winner of the 2005 Na- tional Community Awards last month. Anyone can nominate a group or not-for-profi t organisation for the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards – groups and organisations can even nominate themselves. Nominations forms are available from Council offi ces, from www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards or by calling Rebecca James on 0800 87 11 11. 103TC018/06 Nominations close on June 9.
