AFGHAN HOUND Referred to as an aristocrat, the Afghan Hound's appearance is one of dignity and aloofness. Well covered with thick, silky hair, very fine in texture, the Afghan hound's coat is a sort found among animals native to high altitudes. They can come in all colors, and while the breed is an excellent hound (hunting by sight) its popularity here has been generated by the breeds' spectacular qualities as a show dog.

BASENJI The Basenji is a small, short haired hunting dog from Africa. It is short backed and lightly built, appearing high on the leg compared to its length. The wrinkled head is proudly carried on a well arched neck and the tail is set high and curled. Elegant and graceful, the whole demeanor is one of poise and inquiring alertness. The balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to move with ease and agility. The Basenji hunts by both sight and scent.

BORZOI The Borzoi was originally bred for the coursing of wild game on more or less open terrain, relying on sight rather than scent. To accomplish this purpose, the Borzoi needed particular structural qualities to chase, catch and hold its quarry. Special emphasis is placed on sound running gear, strong neck and jaws, courage and agility, combined with proper condition. The Borzoi should always possess unmistakable elegance, with flowing lines, graceful in motion or repose. Males, masculine without coarseness; bitches, feminine and refined.

ITALIAN GREYHOUND The Italian Greyhound is a breed that was generally connected to people of wealth. But this does not preclude that they were used to hunt and kill small ground-dwelling animals. Many times they may vocalize before and during a run. An athletic IG has a head down, flat out, double suspension gallop. The IG’s best attribute is follow. This may come from the fact that they are so small. They were possibly used for hunting very small game or as ratters. Although some say they were bred just to be companions. With their small size comes agility. IGs should have excellent cornering abilities.

RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK The Ridgeback represents a strong, muscular and active dog, symmetrical and balanced in outline. A mature Ridgeback is a handsome, upstanding and athletic dog, capable of great endurance with a fair (good) amount of speed. Of even, dignified temperament, the Ridgeback is devote and affectionate to his master, reserved with strangers. The peculiarity of this breed is the ridge on the back. The ridge must be regarded as the characteristic, feature of the breed.

SALUKI The whole appearance of this breed should give an impression of grace and symmetry and of great speed and endurance coupled with strength and activity to enable it to kill gazelle or other quarry over deep sand or rocky mountains. The expression should be dignified and gentle with deep, faithful, far-seeing eyes. Dogs should average in height from 23-28inches and bitches may be considerable smaller, this being very typical of the breed. At one time, the Saluki was carried on camel or horseback to keep him fresh for the chase. Arab hunters, on their mounts with a hawk on their wrist, and a Saluki up before them, would go into the desert to hunt.

SCOTTISH DEERHOUND The Scottish Deerhound is a relative newcomer in terms of breed longevity and can only be traced back to the 16th century. Prior to that time it may have been identical to the ancient Irish Wolfdog, and was selectively bred to a type that was better suited to hunt deer. However, even the earliest records attest to its tremendous courage in the chase and gentleness at home. The Scottish Deerhound was so highly valued that, for a time, no one of a rank lower than an Earl was permitted to own one! The hound is a magnificent hunter with a keen nose that may be of tracking assistance. However it is most valued for the strength, speed and heart that enabled it to face the largest Scottish deer (often up to 250 lbs in weight)! They have also been used successfully to hunt wolves, coyotes and rabbits.
