Very rarely when I'm on Air Force One am I the second most important guy on there. [Laughter] Everybody was just passing me by—"Can I get you something, Mr. Mays?" [Laughter] What's going on? Willie was also a 23-year-old outfielder the last time the Giants won the World Series, back when the team was in New York.

Football fields and basketball courts are always the same length, but no two outfields are created equal. As Jay Jaffe explains via a look at Barry Bonds and the all-time home run leaderboard, a player’s home park can have a significant effect on how often he goes yard. It's been a couple of weeks since the 30th anniversary of Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run and the accompanying tributes, but Barry Bonds' exploits tend to keep the top of the all-time chart in the news. With homers in seven straight games and counting at this writing, Bonds has blown past Willie Mays at number three like the Say Hey Kid was standing still, which— congratulatory road trip aside—he has been, come to think of it. Baseball Prospectus' Dayn Perry penned an affectionate tribute to Aaron last week. In reviewing Hammerin' Hank's history, he notes that Aaron's superficially declining stats in 1968 (the Year of the Pitcher, not coincidentally) led him to consider retirement, but that historian Lee Allen reminded him of the milestones which lay ahead. Two years later, Aaron became the first black player to cross the 3,000 hit threshold, two months ahead of Mays. By then he was chasing 600 homers and climbing into some rarefied air among the top power hitters of all time.

It has been an historic World Series: The first outside the United States and the first won by a team based in Canada. And Pat "North of the" Borders was named MVP. Catchers in fact figured heavily in the course of this series. It was a World Series that demonstrated certain truisms of baseball: Good pitching dominates good hitting, and in a close series the weaknesses of a team become glaring. In both the case of the Blue Jays and the Braves this latter proposition was true.

Dave Winfield
dave winfield www.davewinfieldhof.com Dave Winfield has been hailed as one of the greatest athletes ever to play professional sports. One of only 7 players in the history of baseball to reach over 3,000 hits and over 450 home runs, the 12- time All-Star is amongst the all-time leaders in hits, home runs and RBI. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 -- his first year of eligibility. A Williams Scholar at the University of Minnesota, Winfield played both Big Ten basketball and baseball. An All-American in baseball, he was voted MVP of the 1973 College World Series as a pitcher. He is the only athlete ever to be drafted by four professional teams: basketball (ABA Atlanta Hawks and NBA Utah Stars), football (NFL Minnesota Vikings) and baseball (MLB San Diego Padres). In 2007 he was inducted into the first class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame. His professional career took off in 1973 when he joined the San Diego Padres, never spending a day in the Minor Leagues. His next stop: eight All-Star seasons with the New York Yankees. In 1990, he joined the California Angels, followed by a magical year with the Toronto Blue Jays where he drove in the winning run of the 1992 World Series. He returned to his native Minnesota Twins where he the 3,000th hit milestone. He ended his 22-year career after the 1995 season with the American League Champion Cleveland Indians. Dave is currently a studio analyst for ESPN Baseball Tonight, ESPN News and SportsCenter, and a host of the national Baseball Music Project.
