You are more likely to know the film rather than the book by Emma Donoghue. And its story is a grim one. A woman is held captive in suburbia for seven years, and raises her son in this prison. It sounds remarkable now, but Welsh had made fiction cool again Novels into Film he penned this, ahem, addictive book: Boyle, assisted by Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Kelly McDonald and co, did the same for film.
