  • The Complete EMI Audio Tape Guide Audio Tape Guide
The Complete EMI Audio Tape Guide By David Winter Version of 23 FEBRUARY 2014 This list contains all known EMI (His Master’s Voice and Columbia) tapes released between 1952 and the early 1960s. Any new version will contain minor fixes or updates, or unreleased titles. If you wish to contribute, please email me at [email protected] with good quality pictures showing what should be updated or added. Thank you. Change log: - New format, hopefully for better reading. Tape catalog prefixes, tape types and misc details: EMI issued their "tape records" under two brands: His Master's Voice (HMV) and Columbia (COL). They were all recorded in 2 channel format, either in mono (twin sided) or stereo (Stereosonic, single sided). They are always 7-inch reels playing at 7.5ips (or 19 centimeters per second). Only a few recordings have been made available both in mono and stereo. However, many titles have been recorded in either format by different performers. Some titles were eventually imported in America by RCA when the company was licenced to produce the equivalent LPs. The table below shows the four catalog codes used for each type of tape and by each brand. Later 4-track stereo tapes and 2-track "Twin Packs" are not included in this list. This guide is based on EMI's catalog of 1958 and may be missing titles released shortly after. Mono Stereo CAT BTA CBT BTB COL CCT BTC CDT BTD HTA SAT HTB SBT HMV HTC SCT HTD SDT Other wordings: / between orchestra and conductor means "conducted by".

  • 'Talk of the Town', And, Later in the Year, in Cabaret Wi
1966 The group appeared with Cliff for a six-week spell at London’s ‘Talk Of The Town’, and, later in the year, in cabaret without Cliff at Bournemouth and South Shields. But they were with him for three further major projects, the films ‘Finders Keepers’ and (as puppets) ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’; and also (in the flesh) the pantomime ‘Cinderella’ which opened at the London Palladium on 10 December 1966. For all three, the first two especially, they penned a number of finely crafted vocal and instrumental pieces, which resulted in eponymous releases, an LP (which made No.6), an EP (No.6 again), and another LP put out in January 1967 (a mere No.30 for Cinderella , a very uneven set, the first Cliff Album not to make the Top 20). The high points for Cliff and The Shadows in the Singles department were the outstanding ‘Time Drags By’ (No.10) and ‘In The Country’ (yet another No.6), both group compositions. The Shadows fared less well with their own Singles, the first and third of which were vocals: [138] I MET A GIRL (No.22), [154] A PLACE IN THE SUN (No.24), [156] THE DREAMS I DREAM (No.42). [138] I MET A GIRL was eminently hummable, if not in the league of “a Rubber Soul outtake”, to which one reviewer likened it; nobody appears to have stopped to reflect that the elegant [154] A PLACE IN THE SUN, released in July, might have been wholly out of line with current market trends, as a glance at the Top 20 for the beginning of August, say, will reveal; as it happened though, Hank Marvin’s [156] THE DREAMS I DREAM, the most commercial-sounding by far and a composition that compares favourably with his later favourite [203] THE DAY I MET MARIE, was the one that gave them their lowest chart placing to date; it would be recorded by Cliff Richard without The Shadows on the 1968 Album Established 1958 .

The group did not issue an EP themselves until the beginning of 1961, but they could claim a share of the credit before then for a string of releases in this format, contributing a track apiece to each of the first four and accompanying Cliff on no fewer than 28 tracks of the nine EPs marketed by the time that 1960 had run its course. There was no EP chart in place in May 1959: had there been, there can be little doubt that ‘Serious Charge’ would have made an impression, and a telling one at that. Columbia’s golden boy would presently be flying high with the blockbuster single Living Doll , but things were already looking pretty healthy: the album ‘Cliff’ had entered the charts at 7 on 18 April and peaked at 4 on 9 May, just as ‘Serious Charge’ was coming out and just as the single Mean Streak was making its chart debut, destined to make the Top Ten — only just, but a clear improvement none the less on its ill-judged predecessor Livin’ Lovin’ Doll .

WE'RE OFF! ... and I hope that we've not offended anyone during the take-off ! It wasn't an easy matter choosing the artistes to appear in this first issue, and we just about went round the bend picking the top four. In fact we finished up real cowards, really, and gave Cliff the front and back page, and Elvis the double-page spread. This arrangement gave us three Cliff pictures, and two pages text, and three Elvis pics and two pages text ! Adam and Billy gave us another big headache, and finally Billy got the casting vote. But I'm sure there'll be an Adam posse round the corner waiting to cast a noose round me ! And I can already see five irate Eden Kane fans, four Bobby Vee fans and a troop of Chubby Checker Twisters heading this way ! Still, as from our next issue, things should become easier ... yet more hectic. For here's how Pop-Ten Monthly works : This is the magazine that gives you the stars YOU want to read about. For your Editor realises that although you may consider a certain star superior in the recording world, YOU MAY NOT BE INTERESTED TO READ ABOUT HIM ! A prime example of this could be Frank Sinatra, though this is only a guess.

  • (New Releases) Exceeded Those Made with Cliff, 23 Tracks As Against 11
1962 This year, for the first time, The Shadows’ own recordings (new releases) exceeded those made with Cliff, 23 tracks as against 11. Still, their more limited involvement with him brought dividends: two Singles at No.1, taking in two classics, ‘The Young Ones’ and ‘Bachelor Boy’, and two at No.2; an Album at No.3; of the various EPs one made No.1, another No.4. Once again, the stream of group compositions did not even begin to run dry: all four contributed to numbers for themselves and/ or for Cliff, the high point here being the superb material for The Boys EP. Now, in fact, The Shadows truly came into their own, by notching up a remarkable four Number Ones in the face of stiff opposition throughout: [47] WONDERFUL LAND, with [69] DANCE ON! following on closely, hitting the top early in 1963 ([49] GUITAR TANGO stalled at No.4); two EPs of five going the rounds: Spotlight On The Shadows (compilation) and The Boys (fresh material); and a second Album, Out Of The Shadows . The Shadows were arguably unlucky with [49] GUITAR TANGO, released in July: it was challenged, and beaten, by a number of big-name vocalists, Frank Ifield, Pat Boone, Ray Charles and Bobby Darin. The other two releases fared better. Their most successful Single ever, and an essential ingredient of live performances, [47] WONDERFUL LAND thrust aside Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’/ ‘Rock-A-Hula Baby’, and enjoyed an eight-week stay at No.1, before being dethroned by B Bumble & The Stingers’ ‘Nut Rocker’.
