Ecological Functions of Neotropical Amphibians and Reptiles: a Review

Nevertheless, little is known about their role in maintaining and regulating ecosystem functions and, by extension, their potential value for supporting ecosystem services. Here, we review research on the ecological functions of Neotropical herps, in different sources (the bibliographic databases, book chapters, etc.). A total of 167 Neotropical herpetology studies published over the last four decades (1970 to 2014) were reviewed, providing information on more than 100 species that contribute to at least five categories of ecological functions: i) nutrient cycling; ii) bioturbation; iii) pollination; iv) seed dispersal, and; v) energy flow through ecosystems. We emphasize the need to expand the knowledge about ecological functions in Neotropical ecosystems and the mechanisms behind these, through the study of functional traits and analysis of ecological processes. Many of these functions provide key ecosystem services, such as biological pest control, seed dispersal and water quality. By knowing and understanding the functions that perform the herps in ecosystems, management plans for cultural landscapes, restoration or recovery projects of landscapes that involve aquatic and terrestrial systems, development of comprehensive plans and detailed conservation of species and ecosystems may be structured in a more appropriate way. Besides information gaps identified in this review, this contribution explores these issues in terms of better understanding of key questions in the study of ecosystem services and biodiversity and, also, of how these services are generated. -

Abstract: Interspecific plant-plant interactions studies showed that Clusia hilariana plays a facilitation role in the scattered vegetation thickets of the Brazilian sandy coastal plain vegetation (Restinga). In the Clusia open formation in the Jurubatiba Restinga National Park there are thickets differing in the presence and senescence of Clusia: (1) healthy Clusia thickets (HCT); (2) senescent Clusia thickets (SCT); and also (3) thickets without Clusia (TWC). The aim of this long term study was to assess soil chemistry, litterfall mass and nutrient input and its leaf-litter decomposition in Clusia thickets, testing the hypotheses that: (1) the presence of Clusia increases soil nutrient concentrations in the thickets; (2) litterfall mass and nutrient input are dependent on the senescence stage of Clusia, being higher in HCT than in SCT; (3) decomposition and nutrient release of Clusia leaves are faster in HCT than in SCT, evaluating if C. -

Estudo de caso em tricomas de Vriesea Vanessa Koza Kowalski1,2, Pamella Paula Diniz Alves Pereira1, Fernanda Maria Cordeiro de Oliveira1, Maria Eugênia Costa1 & Rosangela Capuano Tardivo1 Abstract The presence of peltate foliar trichomes is one of the main anatomical characteristic of Bromeliaceae. These complex structures are adapted to compensate water and nutrient absorption in species that have reduced or substrate and light-reflection independent roots. They have enabled species’ survival in diverse and extreme environments contributing to the wide distribution of this family. In the present work, we analyzed the peltate trichomes’ characteristics in three taxa of Vriesea (Tillandsioideae): Vriesea platynema var. platynema, V. platynema var. variegata and V. tijucana. Leaves in different developmental stages were analyzed with histochemical tests and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Main results include the presence of cytoplasmic content in the wing peripheral cells, as well as in mature leaves. This is the first register of the presence of such feature in this family, which brings the possibility of discussing how water can be absorbed by these cells. Key words: Anatomy, Tillandsioideae, absorptive trichomes. Resumo Uma das principais características anatômicas de Bromeliaceae é a presença de tricomas foliares peltados. Estas complexas estruturas adaptadas à compensação da absorção de água e alimento em espécies com raízes reduzidas ou independentes do substrato e reflexão da luz, possibilitaram a vida em ambientes diversos e extremos, contribuindo para a ampla distribuição desta família. -
