PC gamers can now share video highlights of their gaming exploits to Xbox Live with the beta version of the Xbox app! The Xbox app now supports a wide range of PC games, including those purchased from third-party sources. As of right now, a limited number of games are supported by the new Xbox app. It seems that Microsoft has targeted the most popular PC titles initially, with more to come as the update rolls out to a wider user base. How to record PC game clips with the Xbox app for Windows 10. Before uploading footage to Xbox Live, a clip must be created using Windows 10's Game Bar. Launch a game of your choice. Press the Windows Key + G simultaneously to open the Windows 10 Game Bar. Use the on-screen controls to start recording a clip . For more information on using the Game Bar to record clips, make sure to check out our previous guide. How to upload PC game clips to Xbox Live: Navigate to Game DVR using the app's sidebar. By default, your most recently recorded clips will be displayed at the top of the list. Select a clip from the list. A preview for the clip will appear on the right-hand side, alongside the options to trim and rename the clip before it's uploaded. When the clip is ready to be uploaded, click the Upload button below the preview. A menu will open asking for the name of the game featured in the clip. If the game is supported, it will appear under PC Games (pictured above) when entered into the search bar. If the game appears, click the game to select it. A final confirmation step will appear, to ensure the upload matches the title you've selected. Microsoft claims that game clips will be reviewed before appearing on Xbox Live, so a small delay can be expected during the review process. Your clip will now begin to upload and can be tracked using the progress bar below the clip preview. You can also configure the Xbox One to take longer clips, or even record persistently for up to an hour to an external HDD (here's how to do that). If you're recording direct to the Xbox One, though, you'll have some time limits depending on the resolution you're capturing. For example, if you have an Xbox One X set up to capture footage at 4K, you'll only be able to record up to 2 minute clips, unless you set up an external HDD for game capture. To record longer clips, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu when inside a game. Press the View button (to the bottom left of the Xbox button) to open additional capture options. Press the A button on a highlighted option to either start a recording, capture a screenshot, or capture the entire DVR buffer directly. How to share clips on Xbox One. Once you have taken your game clip, there are a number of ways you can get share it. The Xbox One comes with a few gigabytes of free cloud storage just for keeping Xbox Game DVR captures and screenshots, but you can also export it either to your PC, or to your personal OneDrive cloud storage for safekeeping or editing with external software. Xbox Live clips and screenshots will upload automatically to the cloud, until your storage is full. Here are a few ways to share and manage clips on your console. Saving and sharing your clips via your Xbox. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu. Press the View button (to the bottom left of the Xbox button) to open "Capture options." From here, you can share the clip to the following locations: Your Xbox Live activity feed, which friends can see (depending on your privacy settings). A private message. To an Xbox Club you're a member of. A Twitter link. To OneDrive. If you are signed in to your Microsoft Account on a PC or via OneDrive.com, you will be able to find the clip under OneDrive\Videos\Xbox Game DVR. Deleting a clip from your Xbox One. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide menu. Press the Home button using A on your controller. Open the guide menu again, and hit the View button (to the bottom left of the Xbox button) to open "Recent captures." From here, you can select delete to remove it from your console, from Xbox Live, or both. Find a capture you want to delete, and select it with the A button. (This will open the capture in full.) You can also delete multiple captures at a time by selecting the checkbox icon shown below. Once you have selected all the clips you want to remove, hit delete. Save, delete, or share Xbox clips via a Windows 10 PC. If you're using a Windows 10 PC signed in with the same account as your Xbox Live, you can access and download your screenshots quickly and easily using the pre-installed Xbox app. Here's how: Press the Start Menu and type "Xbox." Click to open the Xbox app. If you haven't used it before, you'll be prompted to sign in using your Microsoft Account. After you open it up, it should look something like this, with a hamburger menu on the left side. Select a preferred clip from the download list, and hit Download to save it, delete to remove it, or share to share it. How to easily download your Xbox screenshots or clips from the web or a phone. Al-Haj School of Computing University of Portsmouth United Kingdom Abstract Games console devices have been designed to be an entertainment system. However, the 8th generation games console have new features that can support criminal activities and investigators need to be aware of them. This paper highlights the forensics value of the Microsoft game console Xbox One, the latest version of their Xbox series. The Xbox One game console provides many features including web browsing, social networking, and chat functionality. From a forensic perspective, all those features will be a place of interest in forensic examinations. However, the available published literature focused on examining the physical hard drive artefacts, which are encrypted and cannot provide deep analysis of the user’s usage of the console. In this paper, we carried out an investigation of the Xbox One games console by using two approaches: a physical investigation of the hard drive to identify the valuable file timestamp information and logical examination via the graphical user interface. Furthermore, this paper identifies potential valuable forensic data sources within the Xbox One and provides best practices guidance for collecting data in a forensically sound manner.
