DIRECTOR’S CORNER:

Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. – Happy May! We’re already through the first quarter of 2015 and the fun continues! I’ve just returned home from a weekend chapter ride to Nashville. This was the second annual Easter weekend trip and Nashville is a great town to visit; there are excellent places to dine, lots of music for your listening pleasure, the ride there and back is full of adventures, and you can’t find a more fun group of people to hang out with than your Atlanta Chapter family! This ride is just an example of one of the many fun rides and events available to you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter HOG. If you have an idea for a ride that you would like to see on the calendar please let me or any of the other officers/ road captains know about it and we’ll try to make it happen!

Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will be hosting “Bike Night” on the second Thursday of each month year round! Our chapter will be grilling at these bike nights so this is a great volunteer opportunity, let Jesse or Pinky Harris know if you will be able to help out. I’d like to remind you once again that volunteering and participating is the best way to make the most of your chapter membership; just look the calendar over, pick something out and give it a try! You won’t be disappointed!

Ride on!

Chuck “Chaos” Fuller, Director

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S CORNER

As everyone is reading this, Chuck Fuller, Rene Durham, Amanda McDonald, Mark Redmon, Mike Laymon, Suzanne and myself just went to HOT (Harley Officer Training) in Atlanta. We all had a great time and as always learned a lot about HOG and how to help make our chapter better. Hearing about other chapters successes and fails helps all of us continue to make our chapter better year over year. One of the biggest things in this training is communication. We, as officers, need to hear the good, bad, and ugly from our members as well as your thoughts on how to improve the chapter whether one on one or in a small group. We are here for the chapter; please let us know how we can help make it better for all of us. Our main goal: Let's ride and have fun!

TREASURER’S ARTICLE: ATTENDANCE JACKPOT

Congratulations to Darren Godwin whose name was drawn for the April Attendance Jackpot. Darren was not at the meeting to claim the $60. We will add $10 to the Jackpot for the next chapter meeting, bringing the jackpot to $70. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in “Good Standing,” a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there.

René Durham, Treasurer

HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN CORNER

It looks like we’re headed full steam ahead on a new riding season. We’ve got some pretty good rides already on the calendar for April and May so let’s don’t slack up. We will be adding a few new Road Captains very shortly and that means more rides with fresh new ideas. Any of you guys and gals out there that have a destination in mind let me or one of the Road Captains know about it and we will do our best to get a ride led there.

Most folks realize that a good portion of our rides involve food at some point or another, so if there is a favorite dining establishment in an out of the way area of our territory that you would like to go to then please discuss it with us. You gotta get there some way so it might as well be on two wheels.

Well, I’ve rambled on enough already so keep those cards and letters coming and let’s go ride.

Mike Sangster, Head Road Captain

2015 HAUNTED COAST GEORGIA HOG RALLY

Online registration is up and running for the Georgia HOG Rally on Jekyll Island. Lots of us have already booked our rooms, so if you haven't yet now's a good time to do so. You can find all the information you need here.

SAFETY CORNER: FIRST AID KITS

This month’s safety article is going to address First Aid. No, not administering First Aid, for I am not qualified to provide instruction on that topic. However; before we leave that part of it entirely, I would strongly encourage you to take a basic first aid course, if for no other reason than competently knowing what to do in an emergency for yourself and your family. After being a coach and now umpiring in Youth sports it has been a requirement that I take some first-aid classes. Most of it sticks with you; however a refresher course is always needed and we will try and schedule one for the HOG group as it is our best interest to invest some time and energy to take a course that could someday help a co rider in the time of need.

First Aid Kits. Do you keep one on your bike? If you don’t you should, for the kit might just come in handy for one of your buddies to apply some sort of first aid to the kit’s owner, and yes that would be you. We do live in an area that has readily accessible Emergency Services, but at some time or another all of us travel outside of this emergency network and into some areas that are fun www.atlantahog.com www.facebook.com/groups/atlantahog/

Atlanta HOGWASH May 2015

to ride in, very scenic, and very sparsely populated. EMT Services are still available if your phone works; However in many locations there is limited cell service. If you can’t rely on professional services, have a backup plan.

If your response is that you do carry a first aid kit, then kudos, and hopefully you will never need it. However, since buying the kit, have you looked into it, to inventory what’s in the kit? I fall into the latter category; I was given a “HOG” first aid kit when I became a road captain and never thoroughly looked into the kit until just recently after doing this article. I was unpleasantly surprised to find out what the kit does not contain. It has some basics, tape, sterile dressings, some latex gloves, band aids, Benadryl tabs, a pair of scissors, a small antiseptic ointment, a small instant cold compress, and a few other items including a small first aid handbook. The handbook contains some useful information, and the time to read it would not be when you need to apply some level of first aid. The kit lacks compression bandages, an airway breather, and significant sterile dressings, among other things. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying what’s in the kit is worthless, but I am saying it would probably need some supplies beyond what was in the kit.

Knowing space is limited on our bikes, here are some suggestions for inclusion in a first aid kit that may better serve your needs  A good pair of scissors is a must for cutting away heavy clothing.  Several pairs of latex gloves are recommended. They don’t take up much space and they obviously provide a barrier against body fluids should you need to help somebody else, or to put someone at ease that is helping you.  A number of triage bandages which you can either purchase or make yourself from an unbleached muslin fabric. These can be cut to your needs and are useful as a sling for a broken or dislocated arm, and for use as a pressure bandage.  A few sterile gauze pads which are obviously useful for covering a wound. You might also find some paper tape very useful for securing wound dressings. Paper tape is very handy as it is easily removed without pulling out hair as other types of tape have a habit of doing.  A bottle of distilled or filtered water is excellent for washing out wounds or for dehydration.  As mentioned earlier a pocket mask for providing CPR without the concern of a body fluid transfer. However first responder training of late has deemphasized the pulmonary resuscitation in favor of cardiac resuscitation, so the decision to get a mask is entirely your call. Individual packets of eye wash.  Small container of disinfectant wash, for your hands.  Small first aid book. When considering whether to put a first aid kit together, keep in mind an old adage regarding those who rides bikes, there are the ones who have gone down and the ones who will go down. With this in mind I would strongly encourage you to give this some consideration, as the person it may be used on might be yourself. If you shop around, you will readily find kits specifically designed for motorcycle riders and with that as a starter kit, you can add additional items to enhance the kits versatility. Remember, the time to get a kit is now, not fter you or your friend needs it.

On May 5, 1862, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet www.atlantahog.com www.facebook.com/groups/atlantahog/

churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and reprised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. Many Southern states, on the other hand, continued to honor their dead on separate days until after World War I.

9TH ANNUAL FALL LEAF RUN

Friday, October 16th, 2015 Start: 8:30 am, End: Late Sunday afternoon RC - Andy Andresen 5 Pigs

The fall foliage is always a great highlight of the year's end for us to be on our steel steeds! Once again it is time to explore the 'North Woods' and enjoy the beauty that encapsulates the mind as we ply the sojourn of fellowship in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

New abodes await our evening pleasures at reasonable rates. Some old haunts will be traversed since it's hard to improve on nature's perfection. Join us as we venture forth and come home refreshed in the soul. All who desire to do so must register with me by email only to 'get the scoop' on lodging, etc.

GOING TO STURGIS!

Some of you may have noticed the ad in our Hogwash for Biketow.com. Biketow will deliver your bike to Sturgis for the rally in August and return it to H-D Atlanta for a cost. This service is attractive in that it can save you lots time on the road; the ride to and from Sturgis SD is typically 6 days of steady expressway riding (just over 3000 miles round trip). You can save your time and energy for the beautiful riding in the Black Hills, Badlands and the many other attractions in the area. This is a great service for someone that wants to go to the rally but just doesn't have the time off that it takes to ride there and back. In exchange for our chapter running the ad in the Hogwash, Biketow has offered to give one FREE delivery and return of an Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. member's motorcycle to the 75th Annual Sturgis Bike Rally - August 3rd thru 9th. If the free tow is something you are interested in, contact me at [email protected]. We'll have a drawing for ONE lucky member to get this valuable service.
