Atlanta HOGWASH May 2015 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, INC., CHAPTER NUMBER 0788 IN MEMORIAM Sharon Denise Lonigan, wife of Atlanta HOG Chapter member, Steve Lonigan, passed away on March 21st. Please keep Steve and Sharon’s families in your prayers. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18 DIRECTOR’S CORNER: Atlanta Chapter H.O.G. – Happy May! We’re already through the first quarter of 2015 and the fun continues! I’ve just returned home from a weekend chapter ride to Nashville. This was the second annual Easter weekend trip and Nashville is a great town to visit; there are excellent places to dine, lots of music for your listening pleasure, the ride there and back is full of adventures, and you can’t find a more fun group of people to hang out with than your Atlanta Chapter family! This ride is just an example of one of the many fun rides and events available to you as a member of the Atlanta Chapter HOG. If you have an idea for a ride that you would like to see on the calendar please let me or any of the other officers/ road captains know about it and we’ll try to make it happen! Harley-Davidson of Atlanta will be hosting “Bike Night” on the second Thursday of each month year round! Our chapter will be grilling at these bike nights so this is a great volunteer opportunity, let Jesse or Pinky Harris know if you will be able to help out. I’d like to remind you once again that volunteering and participating is the best way to make the most of your chapter membership; just look the calendar over, pick something out and give it a try! You won’t be disappointed! Ride on! Chuck “Chaos” Fuller, Director ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S CORNER As everyone is reading this, Chuck Fuller, Rene Durham, Amanda McDonald, Mark Redmon, Mike Laymon, Suzanne and myself just went to HOT (Harley Officer Training) in Atlanta. We all had a great time and as always learned a lot about HOG and how to help make our chapter better. Hearing about other chapters successes and fails helps all of us continue to make our chapter better year over year. One of the biggest things in this training is communication. We, as officers, need to hear the good, bad, and ugly from our members as well as your thoughts on how to improve the chapter whether one on one or in a small group. We are here for the chapter; please let us know how we can help make it better for all of us. Our main goal: Let's ride and have fun! Darren was not at the meeting to claim the $60. We will add $10 to the Jackpot for the next chapter meeting, bringing the jackpot to $70. Remember you must be at the meeting and a member in “Good Standing,” a current member of national H.O.G. and Atlanta Chapter. If the member whose name is drawn is not at the meeting, we will add $10 and try again next meeting. Please have your National H.O.G. card with you at the meeting. Hope to see everyone there. René Durham, Treasurer HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN CORNER It looks like we’re headed full steam ahead on a new riding season. We’ve got some pretty good rides already on the calendar for April and May so let’s don’t slack up. We will be adding a few new Road Captains very shortly and that means more rides with fresh new ideas. Any of you guys and gals out there that have a destination in mind let me or one of the Road Captains know about it and we will do our best to get a ride led there. Most folks realize that a good portion of our rides involve food at some point or another, so if there is a favorite dining establishment in an out of the way area of our territory that you would like to go to then please discuss it with us. You gotta get there some way so it might as well be on two wheels. Well, I’ve rambled on enough already so keep those cards and letters coming and let’s go ride. Mike Sangster, Head Road Captain 2015 HAUNTED COAST GEORGIA HOG RALLY Online registration is up and running for the Georgia HOG Rally on Jekyll Island. Lots of us have already booked our rooms, so if you haven't yet now's a good time to do so. You can find all the information you need here. SAFETY CORNER: FIRST AID KITS This month’s safety article is going to address First Aid. No, not administering First Aid, for I am not qualified to provide instruction on that topic. However; before we leave that part of it entirely, I would strongly encourage you to take a basic first aid course, if for no other reason than competently knowing what to do in an emergency for yourself and your family. After being a coach and now umpiring in Youth sports it has been a requirement that I take some first-aid classes. Most of it sticks with you; however a refresher course is always needed and we will try and schedule one for the HOG group as it is our best interest to invest some time and energy to take a course that could someday help a co rider in the time of need. First Aid Kits. Do you keep one on your bike? If you don’t you should, for the kit might just come in handy for one of your buddies to apply some sort of first aid to the kit’s owner, and yes that would be you. We do live in an area that has readily accessible Emergency Services, but at some time or another all of us travel outside of this emergency network and into some areas that are fun www.atlantahog.com www.facebook.com/groups/atlantahog/ Atlanta HOGWASH May 2015 to ride in, very scenic, and very sparsely populated. EMT Services are still available if your phone works; However in many locations there is limited cell service. If you can’t rely on professional services, have a backup plan. If your response is that you do carry a first aid kit, then kudos, and hopefully you will never need it. However, since buying the kit, have you looked into it, to inventory what’s in the kit? I fall into the latter category; I was given a “HOG” first aid kit when I became a road captain and never thoroughly looked into the kit until just recently after doing this article. I was unpleasantly surprised to find out what the kit does not contain. It has some basics, tape, sterile dressings, some latex gloves, band aids, Benadryl tabs, a pair of scissors, a small antiseptic ointment, a small instant cold compress, and a few other items including a small first aid handbook.
