THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE ATLANTA CHAPTER, INC., CHAPTER NUMBER 0788

CHAPLAIN

I bought a Harley-Davidson because I liked the freedom of the ride. I still do, but what I enjoy equally are the great friendships I’ve made through the Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter. The chapter has brought many people together, those that ride and/or those that have spouses and friends that do. It is a sad occasion when we lose a friend. On January 10th Marjie Tyson, wife of Ron Tyson, passed away. Please keep Ron and the Tyson family in your thoughts and prayers. We will miss you Marjie. In lieu of flowers anyone wishing to make a donation to Ron and Marjie’s church, East-West Church in Marietta, can do so through Paypal.com using the email address [email protected].

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted…..and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 73:26

Mark Redmon, Chaplain

DIRECTOR’S CORNER:

Happy February Atlanta Chapter H.O.G.! Our first ride of the year was another great “Good Luck” ride to Buckner’s! It started off a little chilly but the ride home after lunch was very pleasant. We had 27 bikes including members and guests. Buckner’s is a popular destination for motorcycles on New Year’s Day and a great opportunity to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

2015 marks 30 years of “Riding and Having Fun” for our Atlanta Chapter. Our H.O.G. chapter is the “original” chapter in Georgia; September 16, 1985 was the date our chapter started and we’ll be celebrating our anniversary all year!

We’ve had our annual officer/ planning meeting for this year and there will be no shortage of rides and events for our membership! We’ll continue our monthly socials like “Mexi-Monday” and “Wing Wednesday” and there are some great ideas in the works for a variety of rides throughout the year. Our LOH group continues to thrive and has activities/ rides being planned for a fun year.

We have some new people taking on officer roles in the chapter, please show them support and appreciation for volunteering.  Tom Rapp – Assistant Director  Mary Carol Wall – Membership Officer  Amanda McDonald – Activities Officer  Mike Laymon – Safety Officer  Mark Redmon – Chapter Chaplin

I’m sending a huge “thank you” to the returning chapter officers, you all did a great job in 2014! (A complete list of 2015 officers is in this issue of Hogwash)

In closing I’d like to welcome back our members from past years as well as new members. With your help 2015 will be another great year for our chapter!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR’S CORNER

As we begin the New Year, our Atlanta HOG Chapter has a lot already in the works for 2015. This year is our 30th anniversary as a chapter and plans have already begun on an event for all of us. We are working with Atlanta Harley on scheduling so that we are available for their activities / parties as volunteers and when our activities are planned there isn't a conflict for the Pavilion and or the Riding Academy lot. Road Captains, we have a meeting in February, so let’s start filling up the calendar with some great rides. To any of our chapter members, if there is a destination, ride or activity that you feel would be enjoyable, please bring it to someone's attention and work with them on the details. This is "Our" chapter and we need participation from as many people as possible to help with new and additional rides, destinations and activities for all of us.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER:

We are well into the New Year and renewals are on the rise! Currently 165 Hoggies have joined or paid their 2015 renewals! Remember to click the link below for a Membership Application or you can pick one up from Rene Durham at the Dealership. Please fill in the Membership Application legibly and completely, include the annual fee of $20.00 and give to Mary Carol (Wall) Vasilik (Membership Officer), any other Officer or Road Captain on a ride, or leave it with Rene Durham at the Dealership.

Keep in mind the expiration date of your National H.O.G. Membership is typically different than the expiration date of your Atlanta H.O.G. Chapter Membership, as the Chapter Membership always expires on December 31 of each year. Your National H.O.G. Membership usually expires on the anniversary of the date you purchased your motorcycle. Remember, if your National Membership expires, your Chapter Membership is placed on hold until you renew your National Membership. It is a requirement of H.O.G. that you are a National H.O.G. Member in order to be part of a local H.O.G. Chapter.

Hope to see many of you on upcoming rides!

Mary Carol Wall Vasilik (Speedy), Membership Officer

LADIES OF HARLEY (LOH)

Hello LOH! Hope you all had a great holiday season. Now time to get back to our daily routine. I'm sorry to say that we will no longer have bingo night due to the fact that it's no longer offered on Wednesday nights at the legion. So for this month I found a painting party event that will be held at the Irish Pub in Douglasville on January 21st. The picture we will be painting is gorgeous! The cost is $25 if you use discount code. Go to this website to register: www.paintnite.com. Be sure to use ATL20 as code for discount. This is for the men as well if you want to join us! Tickets (everyone is responsible for their own) are limited so hurry!

I hope in the month of February to start line dancing. Details to come soon so get your bootin, scootin boots ready! Again this event and all our events are open to the men as well.

SAFETY CORNER: GUIDE TO GROUP RIDING

Motorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group -- whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized -- is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride:

 Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank.  Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on next page). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style.  Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider.  Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.  Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A  Single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.  Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled.  Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.  If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up.  For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants.

DO YOU WANT TO KEEP GETTING THIS EBLAST AND HOGWASH?

So everyone knows, around the end of February each year we finally switch the mailing list over to only the members who have renewed for 2015. During this grace period those of you who have not renewed your chapter membership will continue to receive this eBlast and HOGWASH up until that time. Sometime in mid-February the list will change without notice and if you have not renewed you will no longer get this, but if you renew anytime during the year you will be added back accordingly. Don't miss out on what's happening!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON RECALLS TRI-GLIDE FLHTCUTG MOTORCYCLES

Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling 1,560 model year 2015 Tri-Glide FLHTCUTG motorcycles manufactured July 14, 2014, to October 15, 2014.

The motorcycles have a rear brake master cylinder assembled with an incorrect piston, which may not provide the proper support and may allow a tear in the primary cup. If the primary cup develops a tear it will decrease the brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear master cylinder, free of charge. The recall began December 16, 2014.

Owners may contact Atlanta Harley-Davidson service at 770-944-1340. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0162.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON IS RECALLING DYNA AND SOFTAIL MOTORCYCLES

Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2012 FXST103, FLSTC, FLSTC103, FLSTF, FLSTF103, FXDL, FXDWG, FXDWG103, FXDC, FXDB, FLSTN, FLSTN103, FLSTC103Shrine, FLSTFB, FLSTFB103, FXS, FXS103, FLS, FLS103, FLD, FLD103, FXDF, and FXDF103 Dyna and Softail motorcycles manufactured August 22, 2011, through February 24, 2012. In the affected motorcycles, the threads for the brake line banjo bolt in the front brake master cylinder may corrode.

Owners may contact Atlanta Harley-Davidson service at 770-944-1340. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0163 and 0164. www.atlantahog.com www.facebook.com/groups/atlantahog/

LARGE TRUCKS NOW BANNED FROM THE DRAGONS TAIL

Following in the footsteps of North Carolina, the state of Tennessee is now banning large trucks/commercial vehicles longer than thirty feet on US 129. This area includes The Dragons Tail and Deals Gap.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, there have been multiple traffic incidents involving large trucks. The Dragon's Tail, a longtime favorite of both motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts, is 11 miles of smooth pavement and 318 curves. The road is so tight that semi-trucks have to split both lanes to make some of the turns. Even the most careful of drivers and riders have been shocked when they come around a blind corner to find a Mack truck headed their way. According to the Tennessee DOT press release, there were 204 crashes from 2010 to 2012 in Blount County, which is where the Tail is, six of those resulted in fatalities. Only one of those involved a tractor trailer, but many of the other incidents with the big rigs have blocked the narrow highway for hours. New signs noting the change will be installed in January, according to the Tennessee DOT. For more information, go to www.tn.gov/tdot
