Just 4 runners for the 2018 renewal but an action packed race with the 1/7 favourite, The Irish Rover, rearing up in the stalls and giving 5 lengths way but was just ½ length down at the finish despite finishing last of 4! The time was slow and the winner and 4th both made little impression when down the field in the Coventry next time out . 2017 winner Frozen Angel was 4th in the Norfolk at 9/1. 2016 winning filly Create A Dream won first time out for Wesley Ward and followed up with a 4th place in the Albany Stakes. Runner up The Last Lion had won the Brocklesby and went on to finish second in the Norfolk Stakes. The 2015 winner Log Out Island finished second in the Norfolk Stakes next time out. Third home Buratino managed to squeeze another 3 runs in before winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. Only 4 runners contested the 2014 race with none going on to Royal Ascot. 2013 winner Anticipated was third in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes. Zebedee followed up a Windsor win here in 2010 but suffered his only career defeat when running 5th in the Norfolk Stakes. In 2009 Fratellino could only manage 4th of the 5 runners then ran another 5 times before finishing second at Royal Ascot in the Windsor Castle Stakes at 33/1. 2007 winner Mount Pleasure was 5th in the Coventry Stakes RACE 8: SAGARO STAKES – ASCOT WEDNESDAY 1st MAY – 2M (4yo+) RESULTS: 2006 – 2018 YEAR FORM WINNER FLAT RUNS ODDS TRAINER AGE WEIGHT RATING 2018 1522-0 Torcedor 17 9/4f Harrington, Mrs 6 9-2 115 2017 1451- Sweet Selection 14 15/2 Morrison, H 5 8-13 104 2016 3/172- Mizzou (IRE) 8 11/4 Cumani, L M 5 9-2 111 2015 41113- Mizzou (IRE) 5 4/1 Cumani, L M 4 8-12 106 2014 /3121- Tac De Boistron 32 7/2 Botti, M 7 9-9 117 2013 /1133- Estimate (IRE) 5 2/1 Stoute, Sir M 4 8-9 108 2012* 85133- Colour Vision 16 9/2 Suroor, S Bin 4 8-12 110 2011 /875-3 Askar Tau (FR) 19 4/1 Tregoning, M P 6 9-1 104 2010 0-9943 Illustrious Blue 49 16/1 Knight, W J 7 9-1 106 2009 32114- Patkai (IRE) 7 2/5 Stoute, Sir M 4 8-11 109 2008 216-2 Shipmaster 10 4/1 King, A 5 9-1 101 2007 18377- Tungsten Strike 22 9/2 Perrett, Mrs A J 6 9-0 110 2006** 23471- Cover Up (IRE) 31 4/1 Stoute, Sir M 9 9-2 108 (* Run at Kempton AW) (**Run at Lingfield) TRENDS: • All of the last 13 winners were rated 101+ • 11 of the last 13 winners had their last run in a Class 1 race • 11 of the last 13 winners finished top 4 last time out (10/13 top 3) • 12 of the last 13 winners were aged 4-7yo • 9 of the last 13 winners last ran 6 months+ ago • 9 of the last 13 winners had raced 10 or more times (3 exceptions were 4yo's) • Only 2 of the last 13 winners last raced in handicap company TOP 5 TRAINERS: Runs/Wins/Places/Profit-Loss M. The 2018 winner Torcedor went on to run third in the Gold Cup at 14/1. Harbour Law disappointed here when finishing last in 2017 but bounced back to finish 3rd in the Gold Cup on his next start at 33/1. Mizzou won in both 2015 and 2016 and then finished 7th and 2nd in the corresponding year's Ascot Gold Cup. The 2014 winner needed soft ground and didn't run that year at Ascot but the third Oriental Fox was 5th in the Gold Cup at 50/1 the 4th Missunited was second at 40/1 and the 6th, Simenon was 4th. The Queen's Estimate won here in 2013 and followed up in that year's Ascot Gold Cup. The 2012 race was run on the All Weather but the form stood up well with Colour Vision winning this race and the Ascot Gold Cup at 6/1 and the runner up Red Cadeaux handling the drop down in trip to finish 3rd in the Hardwicke Stakes. The 2011 winner Askar Tau was 5th in that years Gold Cup at 66/1. The 2010 runner up Aajel was also second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes. The 2009 winner Patkai was runner up in that year's Gold Cup behind the mighty stayer Yeats. The fourth that year Young Mick was also 4th in the Duke of Edinburgh handicap over 1m4f. The 2008 third was runner up in that years Queen Alexandra Stakes. In 2007 the 5th home Odiham also finished fifth in the 2m4f Handicap at Royal Ascot at 33/1. 2006 winner Cover Up was second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes as the 3/1 favourite..

  • Welcome to the June 2015 Edition of the Donn Mcclean Racing Newsletter
Welcome to the June 2015 edition of the Donn McClean Racing Newsletter. Royal Ascot review Where to start with a review of Royal Ascot? There were some outstanding equine performances, like Solow’s in the Queen Anne Stakes, Time Test’s in the Tercentenary Stakes and Muhaarar’s in the Commonwealth Cup. And there was extraordinary human endeavour. Just about every single horse that Aidan O’Brien ran put up a performance that either surpassed or equalled its best previous performance. The champion trainer had five winners, and if the ball had hopped a little differently, he could have had six or seven. Ryan Moore had nine, more than any other rider in the post-war era. Moore has set the bar high, and he continues to raise it higher and higher. If there is such a thing as the best flat rider in the world, then Ryan Moore is it. There were other equine performances that might have been better than the bare form suggests, and which therefore may provide betting angles for the future. Bronze Angel did well to finish as close as he did in the Royal Hunt Cup given that he raced prominently from early in a race that was run to suit the hold-up horses, as the Royal Hunt Cup usually is. The Corsican made eye-catching ground from the rear in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes in a race in which the early pace held up well. Udododontu went for home very early in the Britannia, his turn of foot deployed just a little early in a race run over a stiff straight mile for a horse whose optimum trip is probably seven and a half furlongs.
