FLOGEN STAR OUTREACH SIPS 22 – 28 OCTOBER 2019 Options for Out of Hotel Activities (Minimum Participation 34++ Participants for each activity) Half Day Paphos Archaeological sites (Duration 09:00-13:00) The whole town of Paphos is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world heritage. Its glorious history dates back thousands of years. Today is a growing town, but in Hellenistic and Roman times it was the capital of Cyprus. Still under the spell of her beauty Goddess, the area retaining her magic, and has remained intact by time. St. Paul’s Pillar. Saint Paul visited Paphos in 45 AD in an attempt to convert the ruler of the time to Christianity. He was successful in his efforts, but not before being tied and whipped to this otherwise unremarkable lump of stone. The Pillar of Saint Paul is one of several popular stops for pilgrims who come to see the religious sites of this early bastion of the Christian faith. He received 40 lashes for evangelizing on the island. Paphos Mosaics. The Paphos Mosaics are one of the most historic sites on the island of Cyprus. Considered to be the finest mosaics in the Eastern Mediterranean. They date from the 2nd century through to the 5th century and many are still in remarkable condition. These mosaics would have originally been the floors of Roman nobles men’s villas and many of these sites are still being excavated today. Tombs of the Kings The Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis lying about two kilometers north of Paphos harbor and it is a UNESCOS World Heritage site. The underground tombs many of which date back to the 4th century BC, are carved out of solid rock, and are thought to have been the burial sites of Paphitic aristocrats and high officials up to the third century AD. Some of the tombs feature Doric columns and frescoed walls. Full Day Nicosia / Lefkara Village (Duration: 08:30:00-16:30) Nicosia is the largest city, capital, and seat of government of the island of Cyprus. The City has continuously inhabited for over 4,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities of Nicosia segregated into the south and north of the city respectively in 1963, following the crisis from 1955 -1964 that broke out in the city. The Cyprus Museum – Archaeological Museum The Cyprus Museum is the oldest and largest archaeological museum in Cyprus. The museum houses artefacts discovered during numerous excavations on the island. The museum is home to the most extensive collection of Cypriot antiquities in the world and is located in the centre of Nicosia. Church of St John the Evangelist Agios Ioannis, within the walled city of Nicosia, is built on the site of the 14th century chapel of the Benedictine Abbey of Agios Ioannis, the Evangelistof Bibi. Archbishop Nikiforos rebuilt the monastery chapel from its foundations in 1662. Dedicated to Agios Ioannis the Theologian, it remained a monastery until the 18th century when Archbishop Sylvester converted it into a cathedral, establishing it as the seat of the Orthodox Archbishopric in Cyprus. "Laiki Geitonia“ Laiki Geitonia is a traditional neighborhood, a pedestrian area of walled city. Laiki Geitonia's restoration of houses is an example of traditional Cypriot urban architecture. The buildings date from the end of the 18th Century, with building materials being mainly wood, sandstone and mudbrick. It is a pedestrianised area of narrow winding streets, combining residential houses with craft shops, souvenir shops and restaurants. Lefkara Village The Village of Lefkara is world-renowned for its traditional handicrafts of lace embroidery and filigree silver. The crafts of lace and silver have been practiced in the village since Venetian times, and visitors can learn all about them, and watch the lace and silver being made. The character of the village is very picturesque with its narrow, winding streets and traditional architecture of old, terracotta-roofed houses. Full Day Limassol & Omodos Village (Duration 08:30 -16:30) Curium Amphitheatre. An important ancient city-kingdom and one of the most spectacular archaeological sites on the island where excavations still bring new treasures to light. The magnificent Greco-Roman Theatre was originally built in the 2nd century BC and its now fully restored and used for musical ant theatrical performances. Kolossi Castle A fine example of military architecture originally constructed in the 13th century and subsequently rebuilt in its present form in the middle of the 15th century. After the fall of Acre in 1291, it served as the Grand Commander of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem Omodos village Blessed with natural and man-made beauty with an abundant historical heritage. Its beautifully unique natural environment is complimented by its traditional character and architecture. The ornament and true pride & joy of Omodos is the Monastery of the Holy and Life-giving Cross. This monastery is famous for containing a piece of the Holy Cross and Rope brought by Agia Eleni in 327 AD.
