Box 50007, SE-104 05 Stockholm, Sweden; e-mail: [email protected] Manuscript received: October 2000; accepted: January 2002 ^ Abstract This paper discusses the faunal content, the mammal biostratigraphy, and the environmental ecology of three important con tinental Tertiary vertebrate faunas from the Lower Rhine Embayment. The sites investigated are Rott (MP 30, Late Oligocene), Hambach 6C (MN 5, Middle Miocene), Frechen and Hambach 11 (both MN 16, Late Pliocene). Comparative analysis of the entire faunas shows the assemblages to exhibit many conformities in their general composition, presumably re sulting from their preference for wet lowlands. It appears that very similar environmental conditions for vertebrates reoc- curred during at least 20 Ma although the sites are located in a tectonically active region with high subsidence rates. Differ ences in the faunal composition are partly due to local differences in the depositional environment of the sites: lake deposits at the margin of the embayment (Rott), coal swamp and estuarine conditions in the centre of the embayment (Hambach 6C), and flood plain environments with small rivulets (Frechen and Hambach 1 l).The composition of the faunal assemblages (di versity and taxonomy) also documents faunal turnovers with extinctions and immigrations (Oligocene/Miocene and post- Middle Miocene), as a result of changing climate conditions. Additional vertebrate faunal data were retrieved from two new assemblages collected from younger strata at the Hambach mine (Hambach 11C and 14). -

Nargolwalla Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2009 Abstract The origin and diversification of great apes and humans is among the most researched and debated series of events in the evolutionary history of the Primates. A fundamental part of understanding these events involves reconstructing paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic patterns in the Eurasian Miocene; a time period and geographic expanse rich in evidence of lineage origins and dispersals of numerous mammalian lineages, including apes. Traditionally, the geographic origin of the African ape and human lineage is considered to have occurred in Africa, however, an alternative hypothesis favouring a Eurasian origin has been proposed. This hypothesis suggests that that after an initial dispersal from Africa to Eurasia at ~17Ma and subsequent radiation from Spain to China, fossil apes disperse back to Africa at least once and found the African ape and human lineage in the late Miocene. The purpose of this study is to test the Eurasian origin hypothesis through the analysis of spatial and temporal patterns of distribution, in situ evolution, interprovincial and intercontinental dispersals of Eurasian terrestrial mammals in response to environmental factors. Using the NOW and Paleobiology databases, together with data collected through survey and excavation of middle and late Miocene vertebrate localities in Hungary and Romania, taphonomic bias and sampling completeness of Eurasian faunas are assessed. -

The species recorded at Lazarevac village are Spermophilinus bredai, Miopetaurista dehmi, Cricetodon meini, Megacricetodon minor, Democricetodon mutilus and Miodyromys aegercii; species from Bele Vode are Cricetodon meini, Democricetodon mutilus and Miodyromys aegercii. The rodents’ assemblages can be placed in MN6. Key words: Rodentia, MN6, Central Serbia INTRODUCTION Early in the year 2001, the Natural History Museum in Belgrade was notified of the discovery of fossil bones of a large mammal within the area of Lazarevac village, situated northeast of Trstenik. The team of geologists from the Museum immediately visited the site where the owner of the plot had discovered the remains while he was excavating sand needed for the cultivation of fruit tree saplings. After a preliminary 80 Ma r k o v i ć , Z. – Rodents of middle miocene from Central Serbia check it was obvious that the bones are from a proboscidean mammal. The complete identification was performed after the animal was excavated by Marković et al. (2004a) and it showed that this specimen belonged to Deinotherium giganteum. -

The Namurungule Formation has been dated as approximately 7 to 10 Ma. This age agrees with the mammalian assemblage of the Namurungule Formation. Sedimentological evidence of this formation supports that the Namurungule Formation was deposited in lacustrine and/or fluvial environments. Numerous equid and bovid remains were found from the Namurungule Formation. These taxa indicate the open woodland to savanna environments. Assemblage of the Namurungule Fauna indicates a close similarity to those of North Africa, Southwest and Central Europe, and some similarity to Sub Paratethys, Siwaliks and East Asia faunas. The Namurungule Fauna was the richest among late Miocene (Turolian) Sub-Saharan faunas. From an analysis of Neogene East African faunas, it became clear that mammalian faunal assemblage drastically has changed from woodland fauna to openland fauna during Astaracian to Turolian. The Namurungule Fauna is the forerunner of the modem Sub-Saharan (Ethiopian) faunas in savanna and woodland environments. New Data on the Miocene Stem Lagomorph Eurolagus Fontannesi, and Its Northernmost Record
New data on the Miocene stem lagomorph Eurolagus fontannesi, and its northernmost record ŁUCJA FOSTOWICZ−FRELIK, ADAM NADACHOWSKI, and MAGDALENA KOWALEWSKA−GROSZKOWSKA Fostowicz−Frelik, Ł., Nadachowski, A., and Kowalewska−Groszkowska, M. 2012. New data on the Miocene stem lagomorph Eurolagus fontannesi, and its northernmost record. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 57 (1): 1–20. We describe new dental material of Eurolagus fontannesi from the Late Miocene (Early Vallesian, MN 9) lignite beds of Bełchatów A (central Poland), which is the northernmost occurrence of this lagomorph. This material considerably in− creases the sample size of this rare genus and species. We review the systematic position of Eurolagus and argue that it is not an ochotonid, but represents a terminal taxon of an independently evolved stem lineage of Lagomorpha. The enamel of the molars, here studied for the first time, exhibits a relatively thin decussating external and a radial internal layer, and in general resembles the palaeolagine lagomorphs (Palaeolagus) rather than the archaeolagine leporids (Hypolagus)or advanced ochotonids (Ochotona). The dental wear features of Eurolagus fontannesi indicate that the species was a sylvan mixed−feeder. This agrees with the Bełchatów A paleoenvironment, which is best approximated as the kind of mixed mesophytic forest now encountered in the Caucasus, Iran, and India. The extinction of Eurolagus was probably related to the noticeable faunal change following the increased cooling of the European climate during the Late Miocene. The first indicator of this event can be observed in Bełchatów A, marked by the immigration of Microtocricetus and the absence of Neocometes. ROBERTSON, JR.1 SYNOPSIS: The mammalian fauna of Haile XV A is the first known from the Gulf Coastal Plain during Blancan ( Latest Pliocene) time. The mammals are repre- sented by 8 orders, 17 families, and 18 genera, of which two are new species and three are new to North America. Kraglievichia, a giant, extinct armadillo previously known only from Late Miocene and Pliocene deposits of South America, is reported for the first time in North America and a new species is described. A brief review of the subfamily Chlamytheriinae suggests that Plaina Castellanos is a synonym of Krag- lievichia Castellanos and that Holistetteria Castellanos is a synonym of Pampatherium Ameghino.
