Spiritual refl ections by Reverend Deborah Smith Watrous/Young Pastoral Charge In the words Jesus taught us or, as most scholars now agree, the words the early church taught us, we pray - “thy kingdom come” most Sundays and days in between for pious Christians. Too often, I think, we assume these words mean “God make everyone else be- lieve like us!” We think once that happens, then the Realm or King- dom of God will be here. Then everything will be Christmassy and all will be right with the world. The word ‘kingdom’ is troublesome because the image of king is one we have ingrained in us from a very early age. We live under the British Empire and we are familiar with the language of col- onization. We grew up with the concept of a royal family and we know exactly what a king or queen does and is. They have a sceptre, a crown, they sit on a royal throne with robes and they rule. Just ask the Queen of England how often children are disappointed to meet her and ask, “Where is your crown?” We know what a kingdom is all about. But in this case, we are all wrong. We perhaps need to wipe our slate clean of such imagery and language and begin with the im- age again. We search for one worth crowning . . . for one we can commit ourselves to wholeheartedly. And after all these years, we still fi nd worthy, the Jew from Galilee . . . the one who befriends prostitutes and tax-collectors and who sets children on his knee . . . the one who incurs the wrath of the established order of our world when he says ‘the last shall be fi rst and the fi rst shall be last’ . . . the one who comes not to be served, but to serve . . . this one born in a manger and en- throned on a cross . . . this one who calls each one of us to follow in his path of peace and love if we be citizens of God’s realm. “Thy kingdom come” is not a wish or a hope when we pray, it is a petition. It is Jesus’ petition to us. It is an acknowledgement that we have a lot of work ahead of us to bring the realm of God fully into being. A realm that is here, but not yet fully. A realm where all are loved and included and fed and clothed. A realm where justice and equality among people is reality and there is peace. What will you do to help the realm of God be a reality in your life? In our community? In our world? May God be with you in this Advent season as you prepare for the coming of a servant ‘king’. “DAGNABIT! Sometime in the late 1960s new owner Char- lie Elviss had this build- ing moved to main beach, across from the Chalet Pool by Jeff Baker who was a local carpenter. The summer shop was oper- ated under the name of Rexall Beach Store in order to connect it with their Watrous business. Charlie’s late wife, Fran- kie, was the chief operator and their two daughters, Terese and Charlene, also 09122MF00 worked in the store. They remember selling lots of items with the logo of a man fl oating on his back in Little Manitou Lake read- ing the paper (many of you will have seen a photo like that). The girls also served many Jewish customers who came for the mineral baths. Inside the store the cash register and counter were along the east wall. The opposite wall had a rack for magazines and at the front door postcards were available on a rotary rack. The “hottest” selling items were bathing caps, souven- irs and the postcards. Sunday evenings Jim Bowman’s band played for an hour or so, the store being open until 9.30 p.m. on weekends. In 1991 the store was closed and over the years the structure has served as a fast food outlet, ice cream parlour, craft shop and now, enlarged, is well known as the Village Perk. Have a great week and happy local Christmas shopping. Sources: Charlie Elviss, Prairie Refl ections, people reminiscing and Canada Post archives. Thank you to all for sharing.
