A few years ago, the question circulating among Goodwill executives was, “Can Goodwill’s business model survive in this new era of on-line retail sales brought about by Amazon, eBay and others?” This is extraordinary because we felt secure in our retail operations for over 100 years with never a thought about a doubtful future. All we needed to do was more of the same. But today we see that the retail environment has dramatically changed. We are proud to note that over the past two years we have answered that question…at least for Goodwill Industries here in the Big Bend of Florida. Yes! Not only can we survive, but we can prosper. Not by more of the same, but by constant change. In today’s world, customers have an infinite number of buying choices right in the palm of their hands. Today the name of the game is convenience and a positive shopping experience. Goodwill stores must provide both in order to compete. We firmly believe that change is essential, and our team has embraced it at all levels. As a result, while others in the retail landscape are failing, we are growing. What about our “Mission” - the provision of jobs and services? There too, change is necessary if we are to meet the challenges posed by a society now driven by technology at every turn. We must take work to people through on-line exchanges of education, training and assistance. We are doing just that here at Goodwill Industries - Big Bend. Today, Dave and I are extremely proud to say that change has been embraced and the future of Goodwill Industries - Big Bend looks great. At least until the next revolution. Fred G.
