FA Vase Winners: 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011 WHITLEY BAY FC BW3 Welcome to Hillheads WHITLEY BAY v SOUTH SHIELDS STL NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION 1 Saturday 17th December 2011

Good afternoon and welcome to Hillheads Park for today’s STL Northern League game against South Shields I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all South Shields players, officials and supporters and I hope they enjoy their afternoon with us. In particular we are pleased to welcome back to Hillheads former Bay players Jon King and Lee Picton, who are the new management duo at Filtrona Park. Both of our sides are in good form at the moment and as is usually the case, this local cross-Tyne derby looks like being a keenly contested game. We will be without at least six regular players today through a combination of injury and suspension but this gives opportunities to some of our very successful reserve team players. On Tuesday evening both sides were in action and had to contend with horrendous conditions as gale force winds battered the region. We both came away with draws but in hugely contrasting style, with the Mariners involved in a remarkable and highly commendable 5-5 draw at West Auckland while there were no goals in our game at Marske, this incidentally being our first drawn game since the opening day of the season. Congratulations to Paul Chow on scoring his 150th goal for the club at Ashington last Saturday. This is a tremendous achievement and we look forward to many more goals from Paul, who has already broken various scoring records and has notched 23 goals so far this season. As this is our last game before Christmas, may I on behalf of Whitley Bay Football Club wish all players, supporters and officials of both clubs, and also today’s match officials a very Happy Christmas! Our next game is here at Hillheads on Boxing Day, Monday 26th December against Newcastle Benfield, kick off 3.00pm

MATCH REPORTS BW5 ASHINGTON 1 WHITLEY BAY 3 Saturday 10th December Whitley continued their recent improvement with an impressive victory at Ashington. The Colliers came into the game in excellent form and having knocked Spennymoor out of the FA Vase the previous week. Whitley on the other hand were missing four players through injury, and looked to be in danger of losing their unbeaten record at Woodhorn Lane. Another intriguing aspect of the game involved Chris Fawcett and Phill Bell who swapped clubs just a month ago. Both players Chow celebrating his second goal seemed to have benefitted from the move and it can be little coincidence that Whitley’s improved form has followed Fawcett’s had more possession as the half drew to a close. BW12 A brief history of Whitley Bay Football Club

1970’s The early 1970’s saw Bay’s successes continue with the League Cup being won in 1970/71, and the County Cup in 1970/71 and 1972/73. With the demise of amateur football the Club’s fortunes took a nosedive, culminating in them havin g to apply for re-election to the League in 1979/80. 1980’s In 1987/88, with fortunes rising, the club joined the Northern Premier League. In 1989/90 the Bay had their best ever run in the FA Cup, when they reached the 3rd Round, going down 1-0 at Rochdale, after a 1-0 win at then League side Scarborough, and in the 2nd Round defeating former winners Preston North End 2-0 in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras. 1990’s The following season Whitley won not only the First Division Cup for the second time but also the Championship and promotion to the Premier Division. They finished in 11th spot in the 1993/94 season, their best position in the Premier Division. A decline in fortunes followed during the later 90’s and in 2000 Whitley were relegated back to the Northern League. 2000’s A new century marked the beginning of the most successful period in the club’s history as they rose to national prominence with record breaking achievements in the FA Vase. The 2001/02 season proved to be one of the most memorable in the clubs’ history when in only their second season in the competition and against all expectations they won the FA Vase at Villa Park, thanks to a spectacular Ian Chandler header in extra tim e against their Eastern League opponents Tiptree United. With expectations high, things didn’t go to plan the following season 1950’s and only 12 months after leading the team to Vase glory, The present Whitley Bay Football Club was formed in 1950 and Manager Andy Gowens resigned. was known as Whitley Bay Athletic.
