Charges to Students 2007/8 Travel to College 2021-22 QMC has a Green Travel Plan which commits us to cutting down car use to the site as much as possible - both for the benefit of the neighbourhood and to reduce the College’s impact on the wider environment. In the current climate we anticipate that car use may increase and we will monitor this as the position becomes clearer. When thinking about travel to College, look for the most environmentally friendly form of transport wherever possible: Consider walking or cycling to College if you live within Basingstoke. These methods of travel are cheap, keep you fit and are good for the environment. There are many safe walking routes to College and a network of safe cycle routes. Ample covered cycle parking is available at the College. There are also showers available for use and lockers in which you can store equipment. Take public transport if this is appropriate in the current climate. College buses or Stagecoach services are available on most routes to College. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk from the bus or train stations. If you are being given a lift to College you must use the turning circle and drop-off point at the far end of Cliddesden Road. DO NOT DRIVE ON TO THE COLLEGE SITE. Please be considerate to our neighbours and DO NOT park in neighbouring streets or block driveways. Parking spaces on the site are very limited and we will manage availability on a case by case basis during the current situation. If you wish to apply for a parking permit to access the site by car an application form is available from the Help Desk when you join. Each application will be considered on its merits and special cases will be viewed sympathetically. Parking costs £120 for the whole academic year, £80 from the Spring Term onwards and £40 for the Summer Term. COLLEGE BUS SERVICES – ONLY £475 for an Annual Pass For students who live in the Andover, Burghfield, Fleet/Yateley/Hartley Wintney, Hook/Odiham/Warnborough, Newbury/Headley/Kingsclere, North Waltham/Hatch Warren/Kempshott, or Whitchurch/Overton areas the College organises private coach transport. We offer an annual pass for 2021/22 for £475. As the services are contracted annually, tickets are only issued on an annual basis and payments are not refundable. To help spread the cost we are able to accept an initial payment of £275 at enrolment, with the remaining two payments of £100 by credit/debit card in the first week of October and November 2021 inclusive. Payments can be made through our Tucasi online payment system. We will send you a user ID and password upon completion of the application form, to enable you to do this. College bus places are awarded on a first-come first-served basis. Please remember that you commit to one full year and payments are not refundable for part use of a College bus pass. These services are often faster and more direct than the scheduled services. They deliver you to the College site, but they only run once a day each way in term time. Your timetabled taught lessons may start and finish later/earlier than the bus schedule. This trapped time represents valuable opportunities for personal study, homework, etc. Our buses are not used by members of the general public. The passes cannot be used on Stagecoach services. If you lose your College bus pass it will cost £10 for a replacement. How to Apply for a College Bus Pass Use the link on www.qmc.ac.uk/travel to apply for a College bus pass. Once we receive a completed form your place is provisionally reserved. We will telephone you to arrange credit/debit card payment, or email you with a Pupil Link Code to pay online through Tucasi (our payment system) – you can choose the payment method via the link/application form. Please allow time for processing. Students will have their photograph taken at enrolment. We will use this photo to print bus passes which will be ready for collection on Induction Day if payment has been received. Students who have applied for a place will be able to travel in the first few days of term without a bus pass. STAGECOACH BUS SERVICES Updated 8.7.21 following publication of Stagecoach pricing To use scheduled Stagecoach bus services to and from College you will need to purchase a StudentRider Basingstoke (local/inner Basingstoke), or a StudentRider Gold (for those living outside Basingstoke). You must apply for the zone appropriate to your address and this will be checked. The Stagecoach bus pass has the advantage that it can also be used in the evenings, at weekends and during holidays, without additional payments, for travel within your area. You must carry photo ID in support of your bus pass. Rates for 2021/22 are confirmed below: 2021/2022 Basingstoke Gold Autumn term £167 £322 Includes Christmas holiday Spring term £145 £275 Includes Easter holiday Summer term £120 £229 Excludes summer holiday; ticket expires at end of term Annual £425 £745 Includes all holidays; ticket expires 31 August Student rate tickets will be available to any full time student aged 16+. Applications are made through the Stagecoach website and issued as a smartcard. Replacement smartcards can be requested by students free of charge through the Stagecoach website or by phone. It is not possible to pay QMC for a Stagecoach Bus Pass. Direct card payments to QMC, or online payments through Tucasi, are for College bus passes only. If you live within the Basingstoke town area and wish to purchase a weekly or monthly bus pass you can do so by contacting Stagecoach directly. How to Apply for a Stagecoach Bus Pass For information regarding bus timetables, zone maps, etc, please visit the Stagecoach website. • Lost Roads of Burghclere
THE LOST ROADS OF BURGHCLERE AND NEWTOWN A Discussion compiled by Neill Bruce © <[email protected]> Manor Farm Old Burghclere, from the top of West st. THE LOST ROADS OF BURGHCLERE and NEWTOWN Have you ever wondered why a road has a kink in it? - As with Harts Lane by the Carpenter’s Arms. Well, if you look carefully enough it frequently means that the kink was part of another road which crossed it, or the road you are on has been diverted. Only rarely - if ever locally - does it mean that it had to skirt a pond or bog etc. Always look at field boundaries, as they frequently reveal a possible road line. In this article, I refer to roads, which in the 18th. century - and before - would mostly have just been tracks. i.e. the Green Lane is an ancient track that runs from Highclere to Hockleys Hole, and then on to Echinswell as a road. I also refer to and use clips of several maps, including Mr Taylor’s map of 1759 and Mr Milne’s map of 1791. These maps are available to view at ‘Old Hampshire Mapped’ on the Internet, and I am most grateful to Martin Norgate for allowing me to use these maps to illustrate this history of the roads in Burghclere and Newtown. I will also often refer to a map dated 1768 by John Willis and 50+ year old Ordnance Survey maps - now out of © - are reproduced by kind permission of the Ordnance Survey UK. So to Harts Lane; the kink lines up with the original route of Ox Drove, which curved round the back of the properties beside the Sandham Chapel, and crossed Harts Lane where the field gate used to be - and a new house is now built.
