Spring 2011 Upper East Side Landmark Threatened with Demolitio N!
FRIENDS of the UPPER EAST SIDE HISTORIC DISTRICTS Spring 2011 Upper East Side Landmark Threatened with Demolitio n! In the coming weeks, FRIENDS will be confronted with one of our greatest preservation challenges to date. The owners of the individually designated City and Suburban Homes First Avenue Estate (the full-block complex from First to York Avenues between East 64th and East 65th Streets) have submitted an application for the demolition of 429 East 64th Street and 430 East 65th Street on the ground that they do not generate a sufficient economic return. Park Avenue Manhattan the Historic Districts Council Is New York’S Citywide Advocate for Historic Buildings and Neighborhoods
A Guide to Historic New York City Neighborhoods Park Avenue Manhattan The Historic Districts Council is New York’s citywide advocate for historic buildings and neighborhoods. The Six to Celebrate program annually identifies six historic New York City neighborhoods that merit preservation as priorities for HDC’s advocacy and consultation over a yearlong period. The six, chosen from applications submitted by community organizations, are selected on the basis of the architectural and historic merit of the area, the level of threat to the neighborhood, the strength and willingness of the local advocates, and the potential for HDC’s preservation support to be meaningful. HDC works with these neighborhood partners to set and reach preservation goals through strategic planning, advocacy, outreach, programs and publicity. The core belief of the Historic Districts Council is that preservation and enhancement of New York City’s historic resources—its neighborhoods, buildings, parks and public spaces— are central to the continued success of the city. The Historic Districts Council works to ensure the preservation of these resources and uphold the New York City Landmarks Law and to further the preservation ethic. This mission is accomplished through ongoing programs of assistance to more than 500 community and neighborhood groups and through public- policy initiatives, publications, educational outreach and sponsorship of community events. Support is provided in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. -

Utility Rate Analysis Consultants (URAC) 156 Scranton Avenue (516) 536-4545 fax (516) 594-9413 Lynbrook, NY 11563 email: [email protected] ______________________________________________________________________________ December 14, 2017 Submitted by email to [email protected] Ms. Kathleen H. Burgess, Secretary State of New York Department of Public Service 3 Empire State Plaza Albany, NY 12223 Re: Re: PETITION FOR REHEARING 17-S-0542 - In the Matter of the Rules and Regulations of the Public Service Commission, Contained in 16 NYCRR, in Relation to Complaint Procedures—Appeal by 36 East 72 Street Corp. of the Informal Decision Rendered in Favor of Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (649082). Dear Secretary Burgess: Subsequent to our filing for rehearing in the above referenced matter, Ms. Mary Krayeske, representing Con Edison, contacted my office and advised that in consumer complaint case 639886 URAC was informed that meter number 7825 was tested on September 9, 2015 and found to be registering slow at 94.87%. The filing in that case directly conflicts with a filing in consumer complaint case 549672, on which I relied, where Con Edison listed meters tested in bulk and testified that meter number 7825 was not tested. I have attached both the meter test report from case 639886 and the submission by Con Ed in 549672. After review of both consumer complaint files I have decided that the meter test report in case 639886 outweighs the submission by Con Edison in case 549672. As such, unless the Commission see’s any reason otherwise, I am withdrawing the Petition and the matter can be considered closed. -
Cross & Cross: Transforming New York
Architecture April 2014 Cross & Cross: transforming New York by Peter Pennoyer How two brothers reshaped the architectural landscape of New York The General Electric (originally RCA Victor) building at 570 Lexington Avenue by Cross & Cross; image: Jonathan Wallen; cover image via NewYorkitecture hen Le Corbusier visited New York in 1935, he was already known as a W fervent advocate of high-rise construction, so the New York Herald Tribune found his disdain for the city’s recent crop of tall buildings both surprising and amusing: “Your skyscrapers are too small,” he huffed. Of course what he found lacking in the streetscape was the “tower in the park”—his vision for a new urbanism based on point towers, arranged with Cartesian rigidity, of a density sufficient to allow open public space, highways, and landing strips at their bases. While Corbu and his allies were reacting with furiously destructive impulses to free their visions of the future from the very real and beloved context of old Europe, Americans—and New Yorkers in particular—were bent on creating their own modern cities on a basis that was completely antithetical to the tenets of the budding modernist movement: The new architecture of New York was fueled in equal parts by robust capitalism and by assertive mastery of the lessons of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The modernists were at the very least uncomfortable with capitalism and completely rejected the historical basis of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts pedagogic model. But the American students at the Ecole were able to export their training to great ends back home. -
