Well, summer is nearly here though you’d never know it as rain and gales outside are doing what comes to them naturally as I write these lines. But hey! Who needs the sunshine when you have your latest copy of the magazine available to you! Okay, okay... only joking, though many of you do tell me how much they look forward to reading our pages.

Line dancers everywhere rejoiced when they found out that ‘our’ Rachael was getting married to handsome Paul and Linedancer is proud to show the gorgeous couple off on our cover and in a fabulous spread. Thank you to them for making these sumptuous shots by Scott Tippler available to us.

We visit Australia twice this month. Sue Jordan shares some very special memories and Chris Watson gives us a glimpse of Mayworth, an outstanding event with great pictures.

We take you to Monaco where Claude tells us all about her class and her dancing. A little further in France Arnaud Lacot and his friends from Country Berry Association invite us to relive some of the highlights of their Non Stop event.

Alan Birchall and Jacqui Jax then whisk us all the way to Canada in this decidedly ‘globetrotting’ issue of Linedancer. And while we are there we also get to join Vivienne Scott for her very own Canadian adventure.

Closer to our UK home, Betty Drummond herself celebrates her club’s anniversary of 20 years of dancing. She recounts how it all started and how dance has always played such an important part in her life and still does for her and her club dancers. We also have the pleasure of regrouping with Grrowler and his crew for another one of the famous Boot Camps!

We introduce you to Sasha and Sonia, two artists who are building bridges for music lovers on both sides of the Atlantic. We also have the pleasure of meeting Reba McEntire again for the release of her brand new .

PLUS all the monthly treats you are used to and of course the fabulous scripts that Kath has lovingly prepared.

Enjoy the read and we will see you all next month.

Thanks to you. Well done fellow Line dancers.”

A Purple Evening

125 Line dancers from all over Gloucestershire attended a ‘Purple Night’ in support of Pancreatic Cancer UK. Jackie Clouting tells us, “The charity evening was organised as a celebration of local dancer Viv Pirie’s life. Viv had recently died of an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer at the age of 52. Viv danced at several clubs in and around Gloucester, Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean.

Local choreographers and teachers Jamie Barnfield and Jackie Barber wrote two dances, To Be Loved (intermediate) and Easy To Be Loved (beginner). Both dances were taught on the night. The track used for these dances was, How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You by the Overtones. DJ for the night, Martyn Chidgey from the Rebels Liners Club, kept the dancers happy with a good mix of new and old and plenty of floor splits. With this in mind I found out one of her favourite songs by Alan Jackson and choreographed a dance just for her called Tail Lights Blue (Muriel’s Dance). The Perfect Day.indd 1 28/05/2015 11:34 The day was set. 25 April 2015. It was going to be a day that many dancers throughout the world would spare a thought to. Our dance princess Rachael was going to be married. Sue and Brian Hope were on the guest list and Sue donned her reporter hat on the day for Linedancer.

Our wedding invitation read: ‘Ian and recognised that she was a truly amazing Gill McEnaney request the honour of dancer, a beautiful young lady. She had thought all along that he would not be able to make it and she was thrilled, as we all were, that he had managed to be there for the couple.

It was really lovely to see everyone in their beautiful dresses and smart suits – this wedding was going to be an elegant affair.

We all took our seats on the lawn of the Golf Club, ready for the outdoor ceremony, overlooking a lake and fountain - the clouds did try to gather up to rain and it was a little breezy, but nothing

The Perfect Day.indd 3 28/05/2015 11:34 could have spoilt the day. We would not let anything get in the way of this very special occasion.

First Paul, his best man, then the groomsmen took their places, in silver grey suits with yellow buttonhole flowers and ties. The bridesmaids followed, in beautiful yellow chiffon dresses. The father of the bride and the bride herself were next. Rachael looked absolutely radiant in a beaded strapless gown, her hair loosely held with a large diamante clip with a short veil. Ian, her dad, proudly walked her down the aisle to stand next to Paul. We all felt the emotion of this beautiful moment.

Rachael’s dear friend Ray McNeal was the officiate for the ceremony and his wonderful accent was a joy to listen to. His words of wisdom for the couple were deeply felt. Rachael and Paul wrote their own marriage vows, reading them to each other, focusing only on each other - so it was a very personal and moving service for everyone and we all felt so privileged to have witnessed the first few steps of Paul and Rachael’s married life.

Reba.indd 2 28/05/2015 11:54 s ep with Karl-Harry Winson Step Up is all about giving a showcase to a great danceup that could easily pass you by and Karl-Harry is doing a fantastic job in heading this fantastic section. Here’s this month’s new dance for you to try out.

Bouncing Back To You by Lorna Dennis & Richard Palmer

Karl-Harry says: “Lorna and Richard who both co-choreographed the hit choreography ‘Brave’ have written a catchy little dance to a bouncy old school tune by Bobby Vee. This dance is not overall difficult but can be a little nippy when you first learn it as the tempo is quicker than you might expect. Don’t let the speed put you off though. What I like about this dance is that the music is very different to what you would hear on the dance floor at the moment, and it is good to be different at times. This routine has one simple tag at the end of wall 2 and it fits well. Add to that, an interesting section 4 that might keep you thinking when you first learn it. Well done Lorna and Richard, big thumbs up from me. Check out this catchy little dance and also other dances by this duo such as ‘Crazy for your Love, ‘Aleman Caballero’ and their new dance ‘Please Yourself’ co-choreographed with Dee Musk.”

Michelle Risley of the group ‘Peace Train’ and choreographer of ‘The Wanderer’: “This is a well-known ‘sing-a-long’ track of music. Richard and Lorna have captured the mood of the track with a bouncy feeling dance with an interesting 4th section to keep you thinking. With a clear 8 count tag, this is an Improver level dance for all to enjoy, give it a go!”

Very Berry.indd 2 28/05/2015 12:07 While the knowledge that dancing is actually doing you some good is not exactly rocket science, I would like to talk to you this month about the benefi ts of Line dance when you get older. And perhaps encourage some of our readers or their friends to think about teaching older people or getting them involved somehow.

You already Line dance so you know how good it is. Yes, you love the dance and the social aspect of it and for many dancers, life without your weekly class(es) would be unthinkable. It is much more than an hour or two in a hall. It is about exercise and fun, laughs and still ‘doing something’ rather than be stuck at home, with not much happening. For many, at any age, it is a bit of a lifeline. Wellbeing, especially when you get older, does not come naturally and Line dance goes a long way in helping many people continue to enjoy their lives.

But Line dance has much further reaching powers it seems, with experts believing that dancing and music, all things that stimulate the mind, can stave off dementia and reduce risks especially where Alzheimers is concerned. One study in particular looked at physical activities such as tennis, golf, swimming etc. and it appears that no physical activity offers real protection against dementia. Dancing according to that research is the only activity which lowers the risk significantly (in the study it was an amazing 76 percent). Cardiovascular benefits alone are not enough, dancing acts on body AND mind because of the mental effort required to dance, remembering steps, being engaged with the music and keeping up with a rhythm pattern.

Line dance at any age is fun but when you are older and often alone, its benefits cannot be stressed enough. It may be that you never could dance. “I’ve always had two left feet”. And yet in the midst of a friendly group most people suddenly realise they can move their body after all. Dancing will improve balance, something that age often makes more challenging. Part of learning to dance is keeping to the beat, something that older people may fear. In the midst of a group and with others to emulate, this process needn’t be so daunting. No partner is needed in Line dance and again, very often for older dancers this is a big thing. You are never too old to enjoy gaining confidence and engaging your mind in the pursuit of something new. Something Line dance provides in spades.

Most of the time, Line dance is also the most wonderful thing to discover when life throws you a curve ball and, all of a sudden, at a time when you feel at your most vulnerable, you are alone. The difference that a friendly club or class can make to someone’s life has been well documented in the past but for the person who has never experienced Line dance, the experience can become life changing.

So this month, I want to ask all those wonderful instructors out there to consider working with the elderly dancers in your area. It may well be that you can approach your local council or homes and discuss how to start something soon. If you already do, my hat off to you. But if you are thinking of starting something new, looking at what we know Line dance can do, there will be many people who will enjoy and get something important from you and Line dance in their lives. And for a teacher there can be no greater retribution.

If you do start something or if you already teach older dancers, please let me know. I’d be interested in hearing from you about your experiences.

Drop me an email [email protected] … thank you.
