  • Elway Poll: Two-Thirds of Washingtonians Support Raising Tobacco Sale Age to 21
atg.wa.gov http://www.atg.wa.gov/news/news-releases/elway-poll-two-thirds-washingtonians-support-raising-tobacco-sale-age-21 Elway Poll: Two-thirds of Washingtonians support raising tobacco sale age to 21 Attorney General Bob Ferguson speaks at a press conference announcing an Elway Poll showing overwhelming support among Washingtonians for raising the purchase age for tobacco. Poll finds widespread bipartisan support for AG legislative proposal to combat youth smoking OLYMPIA — A Stuart Elway poll released today shows an overwhelming 65 percent of Washingtonians support raising the sale age of tobacco to 21. This result shows clear public support for Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s proposal to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco and vapor products to 21. The poll, commissioned by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and issued by Elway Research, an independent research firm, surveyed 500 registered voters in Washington state from Dec. 28-30, 2015. The results show strong support among both men and women and in every region of the state. Support in Eastern Washington (66 percent) was similar to support in Western Washington (70 percent). Additionally, the poll found strong support across political ideology, with 66 percent of Republicans and 72 percent of Democrats supporting increasing the tobacco sale age. “Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States,” said Ferguson. “Elway’s poll proves Washingtonians agree: It is time to make this common-sense change to state law and save kids’ lives.” Washington has long been at the forefront of the fight to protect youth from the dangers of smoking .

  • December 11, 2018 Thayne M. Mcculloh, D.Phil. President, Gonzaga University 502 East Boone Avenue Spokane, WA 99258 Dear P
December 11, 2018 Thayne M. McCulloh, D.Phil. President, Gonzaga University 502 East Boone Avenue Spokane, WA 99258 Dear President McCulloh: My colleagues and I formally request Gonzaga University officials reconsider their decision to deny the request made by the university’s College Republicans to bring conservative, political commentator Ben Shapiro to the campus to speak. We are greatly disappointed in the university’s decision. Campuses should be places of rigorous, free debate that respects the marketplace of ideas from all people of race, religion, ethnicity or political views. Higher education institutions should welcome opportunities for students to hear people and ideas they have not yet fully considered. While Gonzaga University is a private institution, students are eligible for state financial aid. State taxpayer dollars should not be used to promote censorship. Your university website states: “Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic, Humanistic education will challenge and inspire you.” Denying Mr. Shapiro the opportunity to speak runs contrary to this statement. Please allow Mr. Shapiro to challenge and perhaps inspire your students. It is also important to remember that Gonzaga University is surrounded by Republican Legislative Districts – including the 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th. It is also located in the middle of the 5th Congressional District, which is represented by a Republican. Many of the residents in these districts, including high school students who might be considering attending Gonzaga University, identify as conservative and want to hear the views of Mr. Shapiro. They also support free speech – regardless of political affiliation or beliefs. Please do not allow Gonzaga University to become an island of isolated political views.

  • Washington State Legislature Olympia, WA 98504-0600
Legislative Building Washington State Legislature Olympia, WA 98504-0600 January 25, 2021 The Honorable Governor Inslee PO Box 40002 Olympia, WA 98504 Dear Governor Inslee, We thank you for your service to our State. For the constituents and citizens of Pierce County, the passage of the Connecting Washington package offered the promise of accomplishing a 40-year dream—the completion of State Route 167. Yet, weeks before a key stage of the project was to go out to bid, you unilaterally decided to freeze it. We are writing to express our extreme disappointment and frustration with what we believe to be a short-sighted decision. We are confident you are fully aware that the Puget Sound Gateway package was the keystone project in Connecting Washington, drawing support for the overall package from over 165 business, labor, agriculture, maritime, and local government organizations from around the state. They all recognized the central importance this project plays in supporting the competitiveness of our ports and their labor partners, growers, shippers, and manufacturers who seek access to the global marketplace. In fact, you led the cutting of the ribbon to start this project. Delaying it threatens the state’s economic recovery, serves as a complete disregard to that coalition of project advocates, and does a disservice to all the working families that will benefit from this project. We are very disappointed in your decision. The last year has highlighted the importance of a well-functioning supply chain. While there has been a reduction in transportation revenue across many categories of funding because of remote work and social distancing, diesel tax revenue has remained relatively stable.

  • SBE Legislative Strategy
LEGISLATIVE SESSION PRIORITIES BACKGROUND SBE Visits to Legislature During the afternoon of January 13, Board members are encouraged to meet with their district legislators. Although SBE staff met with legislators often during session, these meetings have value because a message from a constituent always carries weight. SBE staff will provide the members with folders of information and handouts for the legislators. If you haven’t done so yet, please contact your legislators to schedule a 15 minute meeting to discuss the work of the Board. Your first meeting can begin at 2:00 p.m. Election Results and Committee Membership The 62nd Legislature will convene for 105 days beginning January 10 and will end April 24.The Democrats have retained a majority in the Senate: 27-22 and in the House 56-42, but have a slimmer majority than in the previous Legislature.1 The House has retained Representative Frank Chopp as the Speaker and the Senate has retained Senator Lisa Brown as the Majority leader. The new Senate Ways and Means Chair is Senator Ed Murray and the new House Ways and Means Chair is Representative Ross Hunter. The Education Committees have undergone major changes since last session. Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, 1st Legislative District, is remaining as the Chair of the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee; however, neither of the past vice chairs was reelected (Senator Oemig and Senator Kauffman) and a few other members retired. The House Education Committee membership has also changed because Representative Dave Quall, 40th Legislative District, who was the long time House Education Committee Chair, has retired and will be replaced by Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos, 37th Legislative District.
