Jesse Young (Gig Harbor) (R) 1 2018 Session - Legislator Comments on Missed Votes WashingtonVotes contacted the legislators with the highest number of missed votes in their chamber to give them an opportunity to comment on their voting record. Following are the responses received by WashingtonVotes: State Senators Sen. Michael Baumgartner: “My wife suffered a family medical emergency in her 20th week of pregnancy.” Sen. Steve Hobbs: “Sen. Hobbs is both our lead negotiator on Transportation and more importantly an active member of the National Guard. He is routinely on duty on weekends and because we work so many weekends, especially this year, that accounts for the vast majority of any missed votes.” Sen. Maureen Walsh: “You can’t imagine the guilt l feel in missing more votes/days this year than all of the last 14 years l’ve been a legislator combined. I suffered a heart attack on Jan. 30 and spent 4 days in 2 different hospitals. Then on Feb. 14 after coming back to work, l was re-admitted to the hospital for liquid around my heart. I am hopeful my constituents will understand and forgive me. Thank you for the opportunity to respond.” State Representatives Rep. Jake Fey: “The reason for my missed votes was result of my bout with the flu. As was advised to not show up unless absolutely needed by my physician so that I would not risk getting others sick. I hope that explains my missed votes.” Rep. Christine Kilduff: “I take my role as a state legislator very seriously. This legislative session my mother took critically ill as a result of long-term illness and then, sadly, passed away. Never having missed a floor vote previously, I ended up missing five days of House business to support my grieving family, including my father, and travel to the East Coast to attend my mother’s wake and funeral. This personal family emergency and death caused me to miss roll call votes.” Rep. Liz Pike: “I was sick with influenza.” Rep. Mike Volz: “Along with the entire Republican Caucus, I did not vote on SB6199 and was medically excused from the floor during the week of January 29th – February 2nd.”.

We greatly appreciate the recent release of draft rules concerning small loans and we applaud your goal of “proposing strong protections aimed at ending payday debt traps.” As you know, Washington State reformed our payday lending regulations in 2009 with our law going in to effect in 2010. Since that time, according to the Department of Financial Institutions 2014 report, consumers in Washington have saved over $666 million in fees that would have otherwise been paid to payday lenders. These savings are the result of consumers being able to escape the cycle of debt often caused by payday loans. The Washington law curbs the worst elements of debt traps; loan volume, time in debt, and loan size are all down from pre-reform levels. Payday loan volume has fallen by over 75%, and the amount of time that a typical borrower is indebted has fallen by 50% (down from 161 days in 2009 to 83 days in 2014). Although Washington payday loans can be as large as $700, the typical loan size has continued to fall since the enactment of the reforms (from $412 in 2009 to $389 in 2014).

President, Gonzaga University 502 East Boone Avenue Spokane, WA 99258 Dear President McCulloh: My colleagues and I formally request Gonzaga University officials reconsider their decision to deny the request made by the university’s College Republicans to bring conservative, political commentator Ben Shapiro to the campus to speak. We are greatly disappointed in the university’s decision. Campuses should be places of rigorous, free debate that respects the marketplace of ideas from all people of race, religion, ethnicity or political views. Higher education institutions should welcome opportunities for students to hear people and ideas they have not yet fully considered. While Gonzaga University is a private institution, students are eligible for state financial aid. State taxpayer dollars should not be used to promote censorship. Your university website states: “Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic, Humanistic education will challenge and inspire you.” Denying Mr. Shapiro the opportunity to speak runs contrary to this statement. Please allow Mr. Shapiro to challenge and perhaps inspire your students. It is also important to remember that Gonzaga University is surrounded by Republican Legislative Districts – including the 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th. It is also located in the middle of the 5th Congressional District, which is represented by a Republican. Many of the residents in these districts, including high school students who might be considering attending Gonzaga University, identify as conservative and want to hear the views of Mr. Shapiro. They also support free speech – regardless of political affiliation or beliefs. Please do not allow Gonzaga University to become an island of isolated political views.
