Woods “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” Thus spoke wise King Solomon a millennium before the birth of Christ.1 As America labored to give birth to a new nation, the United States Post Office Department was born when the Second Continental Congress met in 1775 at Philadelphia and agreed to appoint Benjamin Franklin as the country’s first postmaster general.2 During the nineteenth century, America continued to grow in popula- tion as children were born and as immigrants crossed the Atlantic to the land of promise. This growth not only caused America to lengthen her bor- ders but also created the need for an expansion of mail service. -

Book Reviews 173 Book Reviews FRED E. WOODS, Gathering to Nauvoo. (American Fork, UT: Covenant Communications, 2001 [cover copyright 2002]. 261 pp, acknowledgments, illustrations, chapter notes, two appendices, list of illustrations, bibliogra- phy, index, $19.95, hardback. Reviewed by Lavina Fielding Anderson, editor of the Journal of Mormon History, editor of Lucy’s Book: A Critical Edition of Lucy Mack Smith’s Family Memoir (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2001). She is also working on a biography of Lucy Mack Smith. There’s no question that, even in the stunning efflorescence of a hun- dred temples before 2000, President Gordon B. Hinckley’s announcement of the reconstruction of the Nauvoo Temple touched a special chord in Mormon hearts. The efforts to express those feelings and connect with that brief but brilliant period of Church history has produced a scholarly flower- ing of its own, among which this book takes its place. Fred E. Woods, an associate professor in the Department of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University, has a special interest in migration history and has already coauthored a book, with Susan Arrington Madsen, about the transoceanic phase of Mormon migration. This volume focuses on the migration of Saints from the British Isles between 1839 and 1846, when Nauvoo was headquarters of the Church. This perspective excludes migration from Europe and other locations in the United States during the same period, but Woods is careful not to imply that British immi- gration was all, or even the most important part, of the stream of strangers who were becoming fellow citizens. -

Camp Site Biographies Alice Houston Alice Houston was born May 19, 1935 in Greenville, New Hampshire. She grew up between there and Newport, Rhode Island. Her family was converted to the gospel when they were young so she basically grew up in the church. She met and married Ron Houston and they had 9 kids together, 7 boys and 2 girls. One daughter died tragically as an infant. They helped raise an Indian daughter through the Indian placement program through the church as well as 4 other neighbor children and for a time their mothers as well. They were also foster parents through the years to 11 mentally challenged teenagers and ended up adopting two of the boys. Because of the amount of boys in her household she was heavily involved in the scouting program for years and on February 16, 1978 was honored to receive the Silver Beaver award. She was asked to go to girls camp when her kids were getting older, but her husband wouldn't allow it until her daughter was old enough to go, and then she attended every year since either on a ward or stake level. She loves camping and being outdoors in nature. She has held many callings both on ward and stake levels in primary, young women's, and relief society through her life time, and has always been a champion for the youth. Avonell Woods Mary Avonell Woods was born on February 24, 1938 to Cyrus & Ina Bundy Gifford in St. George Utah. She is the youngest of 10 children, and as such she was teased and pranked into being the grown up kid she is today. -

Riley M. Moffat, Fred E. Woods, and Jeffrey N. Walker. Gathering to La‘ie. La‘ie, Hawaii: The Jonathan Napela Center for Hawaiian and Pacific Island Studies, 2011. Reviewed by Steven C. Walker stayed in La‘ie last winter, a stone’s throw from the temple, which is I within easy walking distance of Brigham Young University–Hawaii, which is next door to the Polynesian Cultural Center—all the major landmarks of the town within an easy ten-minute circuit. It is surprising to see how compact a place has earned so expansive a reputation. This book surprised me in the same way. There’s a lot going on in this his- tory of the little town—Gathering to La‘ie traces how the sleepy village wrought dramatic influence on Hawaii, managed the miracle of melding diverse factions into a united community, exerted far-flung impact on the history of the Church. President Hinckley, as an Apostle in 1981, underlined what visionary after visionary has affirmed about the significance of the locale when he stressed its disproportionate importance in the Lord’s work: “I never come to La‘ie that I don’t have a feeling that this place occupies some peculiar position in the plan of the Lord” (1). The feeling of condensed momentousness, of implicit significance, is as palpable in this brief his- tory as it is on the quiet streets of La‘ie. Riley Moffat serves as senior librarian at BYU–Hawaii. Fred Woods is Brigham Young University Professor of Church History, resident expert on gathering. Jeff Walker is currently a series manager of the Joseph Smith Papers Project, trustee and treasurer of Mormon Historic Sites Foundation, and managing editor of its journal, Mormon Historic Studies. -

It seems right, then, to begin by acknowledging the kinship network that has made this dissertation possible. Susan Juster was an extraordinary advisor. She read multiple drafts of the dissertation, provided advice on how to balance motherhood and academia, and, through it all, demonstrated how to be an excellent role model to future scholars. I will always be grateful for her support and mentorship. Likewise, Damon Salesa has been a wonderful co-chair. His comments on a seminar paper led me to my dissertation topic. Because of him, I think more critically about race. In my first years of graduate school, Kali Israel guided me through the politics of being a working-class woman at an elite academic institution. Even though my work took me far afield from her scholarship, she constantly sent me small snippets of information. Through her grace and generosity, Mary Kelley served as a model of what it means to be a female scholar. -

The Annals of Volume 65, Numbers 2 & 3 Iowa Spring/Summer 2006 SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE ISSUE: MORMON HANDCART TREK A QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF HISTORY In This Issue FIVE HISTORIANS of the Mormon experience treat the details of the Mormon handcart trek of 1856–1857. William G. Hartley provides an overview of the experience, setting it in the context of the overall over- land trail migration from the 1840s to the late 1860s. Don H. Smith discusses the leadership, planning, and management of the 1856 hand- cart migration. He argues that those aspects of the plan were executed with care and skill and that the disasters that befell the last two compa- nies of 1856 were due to factors beyond the leaders’ control. Fred E. Woods, often using the voices of the emigrants themselves, narrates the experiences of those emigrants as they made their way by ship from Liverpool to the United States and then by rail to Iowa City. Lyndia Carter picks up the story from there, following three of the handcart companies—the Willie, Haven and Martin companies—across Iowa as they were tested to see if they were up to the challenge of crossing the Plains all the way to the Salt Lake Valley. Finally, Steven F. Faux care- fully maps the route the handcart migrants followed across Iowa. Front Cover In the early 1900s the Daughters of Utah Handcart Pioneers commis- sioned a statue to memorialize the handcart trek. Sculpted by Torleif Knaphus, the 3-foot-high bronze monument, unveiled in 1926, was displayed for years in Salt Lake City’s Temple Square Information Bureau. -

Woods On 11 September 1887, the front page of the Norfolk Virginian had a bold headline, “Four Hundred Mormons,” along with the following infor- mation: The Old Dominion steamer Richmond, which arrived from New York yesterday, had on board four-hundred and twenty Mormon immigrants from the British Isles who had arrived in New York on Thursday on the steamship Wisconsin. The immigrants are all new converts to the Mormon religion and will swell the number of adherents to the Brigham Young faith in the territory considerably. The party is composed of men, women and children, and when the special train with nine coaches put in appearance, there was a rush and scramble to get aboard. Mr. A. S. Butt, the immi- grant agent had his hands full in attending to their wants, and allowed a large smile to overspread his face when the train pulled out. The train goes direct to Utah with- out stops. This is the largest party that has passed through the city.1 On this same day, the Norfolk Landmark noted, “Four hundred and eighty loaves of bread were ordered from one of our bakers for the Mormon immigrants who left over the Norfolk and Western railroad yesterday morn- ing.”2 The increase of Mormon immigrants was certainly providing a boost to the Virginia economy. Brief History of LDS Immigration (1840–90) Latter-day Saint immigration research following the wagon train era is not as plentiful as for the earlier pioneer period. -

Bennett Department of Religious Education, BYU Master of Religious Education This thesis seeks to answer the question of how Joseph Smith—History found in The Pearl of Great Price developed into a part of the canon of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints. When the prophet Joseph Smith first dictated the text to his scribes it seems he had not intended for the work to become scripture, but simply to follow the Lord’s divine mandate to keep a record.
