  • Anti-Black Racism and the Foreign Black Other: Constructing Blackness and the Sporting Migrant
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship Repository ANTI-BLACK RACISM AND THE FOREIGN BLACK OTHER: CONSTRUCTING BLACKNESS AND THE SPORTING MIGRANT BY MUNENE FRANJO MWANIKI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Margaret Kelley, Chair Professor Tim Liao Associate Professor Moon-Kie Jung Associate Professor Monica McDermott ABSTRACT The popularity and globalization of sport has led to an ever-increasing black athletic labor migration from the global South to, primarily, the U.S. and Western European countries. While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes.

  • THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 13, No. 1 (1991) The AFL: A League Too Often Misremembered by Greg Thomas 1960 was a time of expansion in every phase of American life. People were expanding their houses to include bomb shelters that often became forts for pre-adolescent boys. We were expanding our known universe with flights circling our seemingly smaller planet. We were expanding our nation with a northern star, Alaska and a southern haven, Hawaii. We were expanding the danger of being a fighting man with a little booboo called Vietnam, and we were expanding our country's still youthful vision with the election of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Beyond our growth in these noted areas was the growth of pro football. For it was during this decade, the seventh decade of the twentieth century (1960-1970), that pro football would supplant major league baseball as the favorite of the fan. New names like Unitas and Starr and the great Jim Brown would begin to overshadow even legends like Mantle and Mays. America was a contact country and football was a contact sport. The good ole USA was a place where people could not just stand around and wait; passivity had no place in American life in these times. For one to succeed, he must go full-throttle for sixteen hours and then huddle in sleep for eight hours, repeating the pattern for as many days as possible until hard work reaped its expected reward. Out of the unending work ethic and expanding dreams of this era was born the American Football League.

The compilation of the All-America roster was supervised by a panel of analysts working in large part with the historical records contained in the files of the Dr. Baker Football Information Service. The roster consists of only those players who were first-team selections on one or more of the All-America teams that were selected for the national audience and received nationwide circulation. Not included are the thousands of players who received mention on All-America second or third teams, nor the numerous others who were selected by newspapers or agencies with circulations that were not primarily national and with viewpoints, therefore, that were not normally nationwide in scope. The following chart indicates, by year (in left column), which national media and organizations selected All-America teams. • Champ Bailey
Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Media REcap Champ Bailey Champ Bailey voted into Pro Football Hall of Fame By Ryan O’Halloran The Denver Post February 3, 2019 The Broncos have a defensive player headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Finally. In his first year of eligibility, cornerback Champ Bailey became the first Broncos defensive player in history to be elected to the Hall. Bailey, who played the final 10 seasons of his 15-year career with the Broncos, was selected Saturday by a 48-person committee. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen was also a member of the eight-person class. “It’s an amazing feeling,” Bailey said. “Fortunate enough for me, (Georgia) is home and the timing was just right for it. Having all my family around, having the Bowlen family go in as well, I never dreamed I would be in a class like this.” Bailey and the rest of the Class of 2019, which includes Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, were unveiled during the NFL Honors event at the Fox Theatre here and will be honored during enshrinement ceremonies this summer in Canton, Ohio. “It’s a little surreal at this moment,” Bailey said. “I’m just looking forward to the process of the next two months and enjoying the time with my classmates. It’s a great class. I’ll say the best ever.” Bailey, 40, was able to celebrate in his home state. He grew up in Folkston (about 275 miles southeast of Atlanta) and played collegiately at Georgia (in Athens, about 80 miles east of Atlanta).
