Jonathan Church, Artistic Director of Theatre Royal Bath’s Summer Season, today announces further casting for the 2018 summer programme with actors Ralf Little (The Royle Family, Ugly Lies the Bone) and Nigel Lindsay (Victoria, ) joining the previously announced Elizabeth McGovern and Amanda Abbington in the 10th anniversary production of ’s God of Carnage. Olivier Award winner Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey, Requiem) is also today announced to join David Suchet in the 50th anniversary production of Arthur Miller’s The Price, and Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey, Lovejoy) will star as Patricia Highsmith in the UK Premiere of Joanna Murray-Smith’s thriller Switzerland. The new artists will also join Tara Fitzgerald, Robert Lindsay and Ben Hall in a diverse season of new work and renowned classics at Theatre Royal Bath, with further casting still to be announced.

Brendan Coyle’s extensive television credits include John Bates in Downton Abbey, for which he was nominated for a BAFTA and an Emmy Award, the 2018 BBC series Requiem, Murdoch Mysteries, Starlings and Blue Murder. He won the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for his performance in The Weir (Royal Court) and has also appeared in Mojo ( Theatre), The Late Henry Moss (Almeida) and Buried Child (National Theatre). His film credits include Me Before You and Mary Queen of Scots.

Nigel Lindsay’s numerous television credits include the ITV series Victoria, Spooks and White Gold. On film he has appeared in Four Lions, for which he was nominated for Best British Comedy Performance in Film at the , and : Alpha Papa. His many stage credits include the title role in Shrek the Musical for which he was nominated for the Oliver Award for Best Actor in a Musical, (West End), Harrogate (Royal Court), A Small Family Business (National Theatre), Broken Glass (Tricycle Theatre) and Awake and Sing (Almeida).

Ralf Little is an actor and writer best known for his roles as Antony in The Royle Family and Jonny in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. His theatre credits include Ugly Lies the Bone (National Theatre) and Dead Funny () and he has also appeared in several films including Underdogs and The Waiting Room.

Phyllis Logan is well-known for her role as Mrs Hughes in ITV’s Downton Abbey and as Lady Jane Felsham in Lovejoy. Her extensive television credits include Girlfriends, The Good Karma Hospital, Bones, Wallander, Silent Witness and Vera. Her film appearances include Secrets & Lies and Another Time Another Place for which she won the BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer to Film and the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actress. Her theatre credits include Richard III (Crucible Theatre), The Case of David Anderson Q.C. (Traverse Theatre) and Marvin’s Room ().

HENRY V Ustinov Studio Thursday 21 June – Saturday 21 July Press night: Thursday 28 June

Innovative theatre company Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory will launch their brand new production of Henry V at the Ustinov Studio prior to a UK Tour. Directed by Elizabeth Freestone, Shakespeare’s play is a thrilling examination of the nature of power, the burden of leadership and the myth of heroism. Ben Hall (The Durrells, Coriolanus) will star in the title role. He will be joined by Rosie Armstrong, Alice Barclay, Melody Brown, Alan Coveney, Chris Donnelly, Luke Grant, Heledd Gwynn, Joanne Howarth, David Osmond, Zachary Powell, Amy Rockson and Corey Montague-Sholay.

AN IDEAL HUSBAND Main House Wednesday 18 July – Saturday 4 August

An Ideal Husband, directed by Jonathan Church will transfer direct from a critically acclaimed West End season at the Vaudeville Theatre. Oscar Wilde’s sharp and witty drama explores corruption, blackmail and honour when a damning secret threatens to ruin ambitious politician Sir Robert Chiltern’s career and marriage.

The production will star real-life father and son duo, BAFTA winner (The Audience, The Day of the Jackal) and Freddie Fox (, Cucumber). They are joined by Susan Hampshire (The Forsyte Saga, Monarch of the Glen), Olivier Award winner Nathaniel Parker (Wolf Hall, This House), Frances Barber (Silk, Antony and Cleopatra) and Sally Bretton (Not Going Out, ).

SWITZERLAND Ustinov Studio Wednesday 1 August – Saturday 1 September Press night: Thursday 9 August

Lucy Bailey will direct the UK premiere of Joanna Murray Smith’s award-winning psychological thriller Switzerland. The play paints a portrait of one of the great writers of the 20th century, Patricia Highsmith, famed for writing The Talented Mr Ripley, Strangers On A Train and The Price of Salt. Phyllis Logan will star as the renowned author, with further casting to be announced in due course.

When a mysterious gentleman visits Patricia to persuade her to pen one final instalment of the bestselling Tom Ripley series it soon becomes clear the stranger has a far more sinister mission.

Switzerland premiered in Australia in 2015 where it won Best New Australian Work at the Sydney Theatre Awards.

THE PRICE Main House Thursday 9 August – Saturday 25 August Press night: Wednesday 15 August

Jonathan Church will direct the 50th anniversary production of Arthur Miller’s riveting drama The Price in Theatre Royal Bath’s Main House. One of Britain’s most celebrated actors, David Suchet, will star as furniture dealer Gregory Solomon with Olivier Award winning actor Brendan Coyle playing Victor Franz, with further casting to be announced.

The play tells the story of two long-estranged brothers, Victor and Walter Franz, meeting in their former childhood home following the death of their father. When Gregory Solomon, a silver-tongued used furniture dealer, arrives to close a deal he hasn’t counted on the brothers being there to confront each other.

First seen on Broadway in 1968, The Price was nominated for two Tony Awards including Best Play. It was most recently revived in New York in 2017, starring Mark Ruffalo and Danny DeVito.

GOD OF CARNAGE Main House Wednesday 29 August – Saturday 15 September Press night: Wednesday 5 September

Ten years on from its world premiere in ’s West End, Lindsay Posner directs Yasmina Reza’s award-winning farce God of Carnage. Starring much-loved actors from hit television series, Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey), Amanda Abbington (Sherlock), Ralf Little (The Royle Family) and Nigel Lindsay (Victoria). The play is a ruthlessly comic study of middle-class parenting.

When eleven-year-old Ferdinand hits eleven-year-old Bruno in a playground punch-up and knocks out two of his teeth, the combatants’ enlightened parents decide to meet to talk things over civilly. But once the niceties are done with and the drink starts flowing, it is the parents who turn into spoiled brats.

Originally written in French, God of Carnage was translated by in 2008. The production went on to win the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and the Tony Award for Best New Play.

IN PRAISE OF LOVE Ustinov Studio Wednesday 3 October – Saturday 3 November Press night: Monday 15 October

Jonathan Church will make his Ustinov Studio directorial debut with Terence Rattigan’s final play In Praise of Love. Olivier Award and Tony Award winner Robert Lindsay (My Family, Me and My Girl) and Tara Fitzgerald (Waking the Dead, ) will star in the closing production of Church’s season.

A perceptive and powerful drama about the concealed truths and veiled emotions in a marriage, In Praise of Love sees a series of heart-breaking revelations change a couple’s relationship forever.

Biographies

Henry V

Ben Hall is best known for his role as Donald in BBC’s The Durrells. Theatre credits include Coriolanus and Salomé for the RSC and (Sheffield / ETT).

Elizabeth Freestone has worked extensively with the RSC for whom her credits include The Comedy of Errors and The Rape of Lucrece. Other theatre credits include for Shakespeare’s Globe and The Duchess of Malfi, Dr Faustus and The School for Scandal at Greenwich Theatre.

An Ideal Husband

Jonathan Church is Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal Bath Summer Season, with his 2017 season including productions of Racing Demon, The Lady in the Van, Sand in the Sandwiches and North by Northwest. He was previously Artistic Director for the Salisbury Playhouse (1995-99), Birmingham Rep (2001-05) and Chichester Festival Theatre (2006-16). His directing credits include acclaimed productions such as Singin’ in the Rain (Chichester, West End), The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Chichester, West End) and Taken at Midnight (Chichester, West End). He received a CBE for Services to Theatre in 2015.

Oscar Wilde is the author of some of the best-loved comedies in the English language including The Importance of Being Earnest, Lady Windermere’s Fan and A Woman of No Importance.

Edward Fox’s distinguished career counts iconic British films including the Oscar winning Ghandi, The Day of the Jackal, A Bridge Too Far, Oh! What a Lovely War, The Dresser, The Go-Between and James Bond’s Never Say Never Again. His stage credits include: The Audience, Four Quartets, Hamlet, An Evening with Anthony Trollope and Letter of Resignation.

Freddie Fox’s theatre credits include The Judas Kiss (London's Hampstead Theatre, UK Tour, Duke of York Theatre), Romeo and Juliet at Sheffield Crucible as well as in 's 2016 production (). His television career highlights include roles in BBC's Worried About the Boy, The Three Musketeers, BBC's The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Freddie Baxter in Cucumber and Banana. Susan Hampshire’s television credits include The Forsyte Saga, The First Churchills, and Vanity Fair with each earning her an Emmy Award. Additional television credits include The Pallisers, The Grand, and Monarch of the Glen. Her career also includes theatre credits such as Cinderella (London Fringe) and Follow that Girl (West End).

Nathaniel Parker is known for the BBC crime drama series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, additional theatre credits include Merlin. Theatre credits include The Merchant of Venice (London, Broadway), Rupert Goold's West End revival of Speed-the-Plow, This House (Minerva Theatre, Garrick Theatre) and The Audience (), Wolf Hall (RSC, Broadway) which earned him a 2015 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and a Tony Award nomination.

Frances Barber received Olivier Award nominations for performances in Camille and . Additional theatre credits include Closer to Heaven (London Fringe) and A Fool There Was (West End). Her television credits include The Street, Doctor Who, and Silk and her film credits include Prick Up Your Ears, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, Soft Top Hard Shoulder, and Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool.

Sally Bretton’s theatre credits include King Lear, The Front Line, A Conversation, All My Sons and Present Laughter. She also has extensive television and film credits including Outlaw, Nick Love and So Long Charlie Bright for film and Thanks for the Memories, Not Going Out and Death in Paradise for television.

Switzerland

Lucy Bailey was co-founder and co-artistic director of The Print Room (2009 – 2012), a new venue in Notting Hill Gate. Recent productions include Witness for the Prosecution by Agatha Christie (London County Hall), The Graduate (West Playhouse), Comus (), and Kenny Morgan (Arcola Theatre). Opera/Music Theatre credits include Gudrun Fier Sang (Copenhagen Dry Dock), Jenufa (English National Opera), and Pasolini’s Teorema (Maggio Musicale Florence/ Munich Biennale/ Queen Elizabeth Hall).

Joanna Murray Smith’s work features the plays Honour, Ridge’s Love, Scenes from a Marriage, The Female of the Species, The Gift, Day One, a Hotel, Evening, True Minds, Fury, Switzerland and Three Little Words as well as novels including Truce, Judgement Rock and Sunnyside. Among others, she won the 2004 Fringe First Award, Edinburgh Festival Fringe for Bombshells and co-winner New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards (Play Award) in 2012 for The Gift.

The Price

Arthur Miller’s plays include All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, , After the Fall, The Price and Finishing the Picture. Other works include Focus, a novel, The Misfits, a screenplay and Timebends, an autobiography and the novella, Homely Girl. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1949 for Death of a Salesman.

David Suchet, well known for playing Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie’s Poirot, has credits across film, television and theatre. Theatre highlights include Long Day’s Journey Into Night (), All My Sons (Apollo Theatre), as well as The Last Confession (West End,Chichester Festival Theatre) and Amadeus (West End, London and Broadway). Film credits include Effie, The Bank Job, Act of God, Foolproof, The In-Laws, Live From Baghdad, Sabotage, Wing Commander, A Perfect Murder, and Sunday. Lindsey Posner’s career includes positions as Associate Director of , Artistic Director of Royal Court Theatre Upstairs and Deputy Director for main house. Additional credits include Oliver nominated productions of A View from the Bridge (Duke of York’s Theatre) and (Churchill Theatre, UK Tour and ) as well as The Lie (), The Truth (Menier Chocolate Factory, Wyndham’s), Hayfever (Theatre Royal Bath/West End) and The Winslow Boy (Roundabout Theatre, New York; Old Vic Theatre). Television credits include Two Oranges and a Mango and The Maitlands. Yasmina Reza has written numerous plays including Oliver and Tony Award winning God of Carnage, as well as ‘Art’, The Unexpected Man and The Passage of Winter. She has also written novels, Hammerklavier, Desolation, Adam Haberberg, Happy are The Happy and Babylone and the screenplay for Carnage.

Amanda Abbington is best known for her roles as Mary Morstan in Sherlock, Miss Mardle in Mr Selfridge and DS Jo Moffat in Cuffs. Theatre credits include Love Me Tonight (Hampstead), The Safari Party (Stephen Joseph, Scarborough/Hampstead), Tin Soldiers (New End/Grace) and Beverly in the recent 40th anniversary production of Abigail’s Party.

Nigel Lindsay is an Olivier Award nominated actor. His numerous television credits include the ITV series Victoria, Spooks and White Gold. On film he has appeared in Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa and Four Lions, for which he was nominated for Best British Comedy Performance in Film at the British Comedy Awards. His many stage credits include the title role in Shrek the Musical for which he was nominated for the Oliver Award for Best Actor in a Musical, Guys and Dolls (West End), Harrogate (Royal Court), A Small Family Business (National Theatre), Broken Glass (Tricycle Theatre) and Awake and Sing (Almeida).

Elizabeth McGovern is well known for her role as Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham in series Downton Abbey, for which she has been nominated for an Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award and Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Her theatre credits include Broadway productions of Time and the Conways, Hamlet and Love Letters. Other film and television credits include Ordinary People, Once Upon a Time in America, The Handmaid's Tale and The Wings of the Dove.

In Praise of Love

Terence’s Rattigan’s prominent career as a playwright includes plays such as The Winslow Boy, , , and . Screenwriting credits include , Bond Street, , The V.I.P.s, and The Yellow Rolls-Royce.

Robert Lindsay is a multi-award winning actor with theatre credits including Me and My Girl (Broadway, West End) for which he won a Tony and Olivier Award, plus Olivier Award-winning performances in Becket and as Fagin in Cameron MackIntosh’s Oliver! Robert also won a BAFTA for Alan Bleasdale’s G.B.H. Additionally he has numerous film and theatre credits including Citizenship, Hornblower and My Family for television and Grace of Monaco and Wimbledon for film.

Tara Fitzgerald’s theatre credits include And Then There Were None (Gielgud Theatre), A Doll's House (), (Comedy Theatre), Broken Glass (Vaudeville Theatre) and The Winter's Tale (Globe Theatre London and UK tour). She also boasts numerous credits across television and film. Television credits include Waking the Dead, The Body Farm, , In the Club, The Musketeers and Death in Paradise. Film credits feature A Man of No Importance, Brassed Off, Dark Blue World, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Una and Legend.
