Hanno Powell, a local attorney with whom who I practiced when I first came to Fresno, currently serves on the IPAS Board and thought I would be a good fit when the executive director position became available. Having worked as an attorney focused on non- profit and health law for 28 years and always interested in causes that benefit children, it was the perfect opportunity to blend my legal and administrative experience with my passion for children.

What are you looking for in the ideal adoptive family?

People not only willing to open their hearts and homes to an infant, but who are also willing to open their minds to open adoption.

How does open adoption help birth families as well as adoptive parents?

Open adoption was introduced to Fresno through our agency in 1980. The concept revolves around openness with the child, so that he or she knows about his/her birth family and to allow the birth mom and family to keep a connection to the child they placed and feel confident that they made the right decision. It is not co-parenting and it is not joint custody. The degree of openness varies for each family based on the desires of all involved. It can be minimal, such as collecting and storing information to share in the future, all the way to having the birth mother and birth family be part of their family with more frequent visits and celebrations.
