The crabs were obtained from Ubatuba region north-eastern shore of São Paulo State. In the laboratory, all the individuals were dissected, the stomach was retreated and fixed in 10% formaline. The alimentary items were identified under stereomicroscope and analysed by the method of Frequency of Occurrence. A total of 194 stomachs was analysed and nine alimentary items were obtained. Unindentified material was found in 98% of analysed stomach and poriferan were present in less then 1% of stomachs. These results pointed a diversified diet explored by this crab, as well as the employment of some different methods for food intake. [email protected] RESUMEN Hasta ahora, la subfamilia Pisinae Dana, 1851 estaba representada en las costas caribeñas de Venezuela por seis especies [Chorinus heros (Herbst, 1790); Libinia ferreirae Brito Capello, 1871; Herbstia depressa Stimpson, 1870; Sphenocarcinus corrosus A . Milne-Edwards, 1878; Pelia mutica (Gibbes, 1850) y Nibilia antilocapra (Stimpson, 1871)], que representan 38 % de los cangrejos de esta subfamilia señalados para el mar Caribe . Durante una revisión de material pendiente de identificar perteneciente a la colección de crustáceos del Laboratorio de Carcinología de la Universidad de Oriente, Isla de Margarita, Venezuela, fueron hallados nueve especímenes (seis machos y tres hembras) de Apiomithrax violaceus (A . Milne-Edwards, 1868) . La distribución hasta ahora conocida de este Pisinae estaba circunscrita a Mauritania hasta Angola en el Atlántico oriental, Isla Ascensión en el Atlántico central, Brasil y el Delta del Orinoco en el Atlántico occidental . Todos los ejemplares fueron colectados en aguas marinas venezolanas en las siguientes localidades: Isla de Margarita: Playa Valdés, península de Macanao; Estado Sucre (área continental): Guayacán . Este es el registro más septentrional de la especie y la primera vez en ser señalada para el mar Caribe, incrementando a 17 el número de especies de Pisinae conocidas para esta área . -

Schweitzer** *Department of Geology, Kent State University, Kent, OH 44240, USA <[email protected]> **Department of Geology, Kent State University at Stark, North Canton, OH 44720, USA <[email protected]> Abstract An extremely large spider crab from Miocene deposits of the St. Marys Formation, Calvert County, Maryland, is referred to Libinia Leach, 1815, as a new species, L. amplissimus. Although severely crushed, the specimen preserves a nearly complete carapace and several of the pereiopods, and it is nearly twice the maximum size of its extant congenors. Key words: Decapoda, Brachyura, Epialtidae, Miocene, Maryland, USA Introduction our understanding of Miocene decapods. The purpose of this work is to name and describe the fossil. The Miocene rocks exposed along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland are known worldwide as yielding an enormous Systematic Paleontology variety of fossils, including molluscs, bryozoans, echinoderms, ostracods, and vertebrates. Indeed, the first fossil reported and Infraorder Brachyura Linnaeus, 1758 illustrated from North America was Ecphora quadricostata Section Eubrachyura de Saint Laurent, 1980 (Say, 1824). An unnamed specimen readily referable to the Superfamily Majoidea Samouelle, 1819 species was illustrated by Martin Lister in 1685 (fide Shattuck, Family Epialtidae MacLeay, 1838 1904). Abstract Na+/H+ exchange was studied in plasma membrane vesicles from gills of three species of crabs: Callinectes sapidus (blue crab), Libinia dubia (spider crab), and Menippe mercenaria (stone crab). Spider crabs and stone crabs were acclimated to full (35ppt) seawater, while blue crabs were acclimated to both dilute (5ppt) and full strength seawater. Membrane vesicles were prepared by sucrose density centrifugation. Na+/H+ exchange was analyzed using acridine orange fluorescence. Male L... sapidus showed the most exchange activity (per g gill tissue), followed by t:h. mercenaria, female L... sapidus and Libinia dubia. No difference in exchange activity was evident when blue crabs were acclimated to both full and dilute seawater. The Na+/H+ exchange stoichiometry was larger than one for both L... sapidus and t:h. mercenaria, but approximately one for h dubia. ~ sapidus is an osmoregulator and can move from high salinities to reduced; its exchange mechanism may be more efficient in obtaining Na+ from lower salinities, compared to the stenohaline h dubia. -

Neverhteless, few of those records include crabs inhabiting medusae. Lychnorhiza lucerna Haeckel, 1888 were sampled (n = 1988) on the coast of the State of Paraná (25º20’-25º55’S, 48º10’-48º35’W), southern Brazil, from December 1997 to December 2004. Eight percent (166 individuals) of the medusae had one spider crab Libinia ferreirae Brito Capello, 1871 living within its subgenital porticus or on the oral arms. Megalopal stages of the same crab were also found on three jellyfish. All crabs associated with L. lucerna were young and smaller (< 3 cm) than solitary crabs caught on the bottom. Thus, L. ferreirae probably colonizes the jellyfish as a late larva and uses it as a floating nursery before becoming free-living on the ocean bottom as a typical adult crab. KEY WORDS. This study presents the prevalence and intensity of infestation by Carcinonemertes divae in the crab, Libinia spinosa, from Sao Sebastiao Island, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Overall prevalence of infestation was 69.2% and mean intensity of infestation was 20.8 + 3.4 (range: 1-148). Significant differences in prevalence and mean intensity of infestation were observed between males and females and between ovigerous and non-ovigerous adult females of Libinia spinosa. Prevalence and mean intensity of infestation did not differ significantly between juvenile and adult crabs or among ovigerous crabs with eggs in different stages of embryogenesis. Carapace width of male crabs was negatively correlated with prevalence of infestation by Carcinonemertes divae. Sexual contact appeared to be a source of transmission of worms between males and females of Libinia spinosa.
