Avengers and Its Applicability in the Swedish EFL-Classroom
Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. Keywords Ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecology, environmentalism, film, EFL, upper secondary school, Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanks Throughout my studies at the Linneaus University of Vaxjo I have become acquainted with an incalculable number of teachers and peers whom I sincerely wish to thank gratefully. Largely overlooked for almost a century, the compelling story of this case emerges vividly in this meticulously researched book by Dean A. Three related and mutually reinforcing ideas to which virtually all pragmatists are committed can be discerned: a prioritization of concrete problems and real-world injustices ahead of abstract precepts; a distrust of a priori theorizing (along with a corresponding fallibilism and methodological experimentalism); and a deep and persistent pluralism, both in respect to what justice is and requires, and in respect to how real-world injustices are best recognized and remedied. 4 Convertible 8. Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier). -

Marvel's 'Luke Cage': the Art of Recording Sound in the Chaotic Marvel Universe
Marvel's 'Luke Cage': The Art of Recording Sound in the Chaotic Marvel Universe In Marvel's world of action and fighting, how do you capture sound? When Marvel announced it was expanding its universe to Netflix with a four-part series featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist ending in an eight episode mini-series, The Defenders, there wasn’t much chatter among fanboys. Even when Netflix released the Daredevil teaser in 2015, fans were mum—but with good reason. ABC’s now- debunked Agent Carter was airing, Avengers: Age of Ultron saw daily plot reveals, and the latest trailer for Ant-Man dropped, delivering more intrigue to the macro-sized hero played by Paul Rudd. But overshadowing it all was news that Sony was bringing Spider- Man into the Marvel world, which we witnessed in Captain America: Civil War. What was then lost in the shuffle is now an unprecedented success for Netflix: Daredevil is one of its most-watched original series, Jessica Jones will see a second season, and the streaming service has announced a fifth hero in the fold, Punisher. Netflix is hoping Luke Cage, premiering today, packs the same powerful punch. No Film School reached out to production sound mixer Joshua Anderson, CAS, to discuss how he captured the chaotic sounds of Hell's Kitchen. "I imagine that when he takes a punch, he not only feels the physical power, but also feels the sound of the punch." No Film School: You’ve been the production mixer on each of the Marvel series on Netflix – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and now Luke Cage. -
Female Representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Volume 10 Issue 2 (2021) AP Research Superheroines and Sexism: Female Representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Folukemi Olufidipe1, Ms. Yunex Echezabal1 1Doral Academy Charter High School, Miami, FL, USA DOI: https://doi.org/10.47611/jsrhs.v10i2.1430 ABSTRACT The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time and since the premiere of Iron Man in 2008, it has risen to fame as a source of science-fiction entertainment. Sexism in the film industry often goes brushed aside but the widespread success of Marvel Studios calls attention to their treatment of gender roles. This paper explores the progression of six female superheroes in the MCU and what effect feminist movements have had on their roles as well as upcoming productions in the franchise. This paper used an interdisciplinary, mixed- methods design that studied movie scripts and screen time graphs. 14 MCU movies were analyzed through a feminist film theory lens and whenever a female character of interest was chosen, notes were taken on aspects including, but not limited to, dialogue, costume design, and character relationships. My findings showed that females in the MCU are heavily sexualized by directors, costume designers, and even their male co-stars. As powerful as some of these women were found to be, it was concluded that Marvel lacks in female inclusivity. Marvel’s upcoming productions, many of which are female-focused, still marginalize the roles of their superheroines which is a concern for the future of the film industry. Marvel is just one franchise but this study shows how their treatment of female characters uphold patriarchal structures and perpetuate harmful stereotypes that need to be corrected in the film industry as a whole. -

4.2 on the Political Economy of the Contemporary (Superhero) Blockbuster Series
4.2 On the Political Economy of the Contemporary (Superhero) Blockbuster Series BY FELIX BRINKER A decade and a half into cinema’s second century, Hollywood’s top-of-the- line products—the special effects-heavy, PG-13 (or less) rated, big-budget blockbuster movies that dominate the summer and holiday seasons— attest to the renewed centrality of serialization practices in contemporary film production. At the time of writing, all entries of 2014’s top ten of the highest-grossing films for the American domestic market are serial in one way or another: four are superhero movies (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro), three are entries in ongoing film series (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 22 Jump Street), one is a franchise reboot (Godzilla), one a live- action “reimagining” of an animated movie (Maleficent), and one a movie spin-off of an existing entertainment franchise (The Lego Movie) (“2014 Domestic”). Sequels, prequels, adaptations, and reboots of established film series seem to enjoy an oft-lamented but indisputable popularity, if box-office grosses are any indication.[1] While original content has not disappeared from theaters, the major studios’ release rosters are Felix Brinker nowadays built around a handful of increasingly expensive, immensely profitable “tentpole” movies that repeat and vary the elements of a preceding source text in order to tell them again, but differently (Balio 25-33; Eco, “Innovation” 167; Kelleter, “Einführung” 27). Furthermore, as part of transmedial entertainment franchises that expand beyond cinema, the films listed above are indicative of contemporary cinema’s repositioning vis-à-vis other media, and they function in conjunction with a variety of related serial texts from other medial contexts rather than on their own—by connecting to superhero comic books, live-action and animated television programming, or digital games, for example. -

Transcript for #TalkDaredevil Episode 3: The Future of Mature Marvel TV VOICEOVER: You're listening to #TalkDaredevil, the official podcast of the Save Daredevil campaign. PHYLLIS: Hey, everybody. Welcome back to a new episode of our new Daredevil podcast, #TalkDaredevil. I am super-stoked to be joined by some different members of our team. I'll start off by introducing myself again. I'm Phyllis. You've heard me on the first two episodes, and I’m going to let the rest of the team introduce themselves now. KACEY: Hi, I'm Kacey. RHIANNON: Hey, I'm Rhiannon. You may have heard me before on other podcasts talking about Daredevil and all things Marvel, mostly at Marvel News Desk. KRISTINA: Hey, I'm Kristina. You might have seen me if you've seen our Team Save Daredevil panel from Save Daredevil Con. PHYLLIS: And today we are coming together to talk about the future of mature Marvel TV. Obviously, there's been a lot of changes at Disney, at Marvel, and obviously with this whole campaign's existence. We are doing a lot of work to try to figure out what's going to be the best way to see our show come back. But we're going to maybe take a quick break from just talking Daredevil and have a fun discussion about what we all want to see coming from Marvel, specifically with the mature content. So I think a good place for us to start would be looking back at what we did get from the previous age of mature Marvel. -
Social Issues, Superpowers, and New York City in Netflix's 2015
“I’m just trying to make my city a better place” Social issues, superpowers, and New York City in Netflix’s 2015-2017 marvel series francHise Octávio A. R. Schuenck Amorelli R. P. (Universidade De Brasília) Pedro Afonso Branco Ramos Pinto (Universidade De Brasília) Abstract A luminous distress sign raging across the sky begs for a superhero capable of defeating the evil that infests Crime Alley. Undoubtedly the scariest part of Gotham City, it is also the cradle of its hero: it was there that, as a child, Bruce Wayne witnessed the murder of his parents - an event that deeply marked him and laid the foundation for the birth of Batman. More often than not, superheroes exist in fictional universes of their own and navigate places and spaces that unravel fluidly - but not necessarily harmoniously - and generally in alignment with a particular raison-d’être. Like Gotham City, these fictional cities sometimes gain so much complexity that they evolve from backdrops into characters, thus deeply influencing various facets of other characters’ trajectories. But what changes when these influences - such as the inclinations that fuel them and the challenges they face - are intrinsically connected to real places? What happens when superheroes and us coexist in the same city? This paper analyses Netflix’s recent renditions of Marvel’s Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and The Defenders to understand how each series’ dramatic arc is informed by, intermingle with, and build upon specific elements of New York City’s geographic, historic, and sociologic textures. We propose a twofold argument: firstly, that these superheroes become entangled in the fabric of the New York City as mythical embodiments of some of its most pressing social issues, whose narratives constitute avenues for diverse audiences to critically engage with the city, its struggles, and its multiple modes of living.
