Upon mastering agency tactics, however, he drops out to train young Chicago blacks as "Freedom Fighters" in this explosive, award-winning novel. • Historicity and Black Agency in the Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973)
Radically Reimagining Rebellion: Historicity and Black Agency in The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1973) Samantha Noelle Sheppard Doctoral Student, Cinema and Media Studies University of California Los Angeles Sheppard Page 1 Ivan Dixon’s 1973 film The Spook Who Sat by the Door (hereafter referred to as Spook), an adaptation of Sam Greenlee’s novel of the same name, dramatizes the story of ex-CIA agent Dan Freeman (Lawrence Cook), who trains a gang of Chicago black youth, the Cobras, in guerilla warfare. The film is a politically and racially charged polemic that challenges Black middle-class sensibilities, illustrates the possibilities of urban insurrection, and engages with a multifaceted conceptualization of Black masquerade. Moving beyond what is just text-imminent in the film, or the film’s representation of a singular narrative history, a historicity of Spook reveals the film’s intricate, varied, and interpretive historical meanings and performances. To historicize the film, this essay rejects reading Spook as a singular or specific historical narrative, and it refuses to place the multiple historical narratives Spook offers within a hierarchal framework. Instead, this essay recognizes the historical contingency, conflicts, paradoxes, and tensions that these narratives yield when placed alongside and in conversation with each other. As a film with its own controversial and mythologized production history, Spook’s diegetic narrative can be read productively against itself as a historiographical product of compounding social, economic, cultural, and political forces. Using Leerom Medovoi’s theoretical historicist approach to film studies in “Theorizing Historicity, or the Many Meanings of Blacula” and looking at Spook’s historic positioning from the contemporaneous moment, the film reveals itself and its meanings to be unfixed.

  • The Messianic Zeal: a Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultural Production
Williams: The Messianic Zeal: A Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultura The Messianic Zeal: A Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultural Production Daniel L. Williams Abstract This essay examines artwork by popular artists D’Angelo, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and 2pac Shakur and compares their articulations to a larger discourse of messianic symbolism in (black) American popular culture. In this paper, messianic symbolism is a discursive chain of symbols that invoke the Black experience. Artists extend the legacy of earlier representations of black messianism by similarly representing themselves as Jews, saviors or folk heroes with a specific mission to save a world burdened by racial strife and oppression. These qualities manifest in lyrics, album covers, and other late 20th century rhetoric. VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1 104 Published by VCU Scholars Compass, 2018 1 Journal of Hip Hop Studies, Vol. 5 [2018], Iss. 1, Art. 9 Introduction Why are contemporary artists preoccupied with the messianic? In a genre known for moral shortcomings, conversations related to religion topics are less common especially considering the “secularization of the West.”1 The messianic paradigm functions beyond religion and encompasses political conviction. This study posits W.E.B. Du Bois as an ancestor of public intellectuals/artists who represent Black American historical circumstances as a messianic experience. The messianic is a common trope among scholars that suggests Jewish culture has a fundamentally different relationship to time than their gentile neighbors. Various black cultural producers to restore meaningful subjectivity to a systematically oppressed ethnic group have used the idea of a messiah. One may view this representation as a tactic of self- fashioning meant to neutralize controlling images of slavery through notions and references to divinity.2 Unlike their contemporaries (Greco-Roman, Persian), ancient Hebrews did not see time as a cyclical, endless cycle, but rather, as moving forward to an end.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Dissertation “You Must Be African!” A Heuristic Deconstruction of Black Identity Production Through the Use of African Elements in African American Film zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades doctor philosophiae (Dr. phil.) Institut für Asien-und Afrikawissenschaften Tuleka Prah Dekanin: Prof. Dr. Julia Blumenthal Präsidentin: Prof. Dr.- Ing. Dr. Sabine Kunst Gutachter/in: 1. Prof. Flora Veit-Wild 2.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Feeling the Crowd: Affective Responses to Crowd Violence in Africa American Fiction A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Brandy Underwood 2017 © Copyright by Brandy Underwood 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Feeling the Crowd: Affective Responses to Crowd Violence in African American Fiction by Brandy Underwood Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Richard A. Yarborough, Chair “Feeling the Crowd” uses affect theory to analyze representations of middle-class responses to the modern black violent crowd in African American fiction. My project demonstrates that writers ranging from Ralph Ellison in Invisible Man (1952) to Walter Mosley in Little Scarlet (2005) have continuously portrayed black middle-class anxiety in relation to perceived leadership gaps in the collective African American community brought to light by images of black collective violence. Echoing Hazel Carby’s Race Men and Erica Edwards’s Charisma and the Fiction of Black Leadership, I argue that these writers problematize gendered notions of black leadership while they explore anxieties triggered by crowds. I turn to recent work in affect studies to explore these class-based anxieties, in particular Sianne Ngai’s Ugly ii Feelings, which offers a critical lexicon that allows me to attend to both the individual emotions and the collective affective responses that characterize my subject. While past scholarship on the black crowd in literature tends to focus solely on the collective body, my work, which attempts to recover lesser known novels in conjunction with more canonical texts, offers a fresh approach that considers the individual response to such violence.
