WHEN TO CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE CHURCH OFFICE: 762-6626

. When there is a birth in the family. . When there is a death in the family. . When someone close to you is ill or in the hospital, or in need of spiritual help. . When someone in the family is going off to college or joining the armed forces. . When there are marital problems and before you call the lawyer. . When someone in the congregation has done something to anger you. . When you have a suggestion for the congregation. . When you have a question about the , Christianity or . . When something in your life is troubling you. . When alcohol or drug dependency is a problem for you or someone close. . When you move to a different area. . When you just plain want someone to talk with. . When you want to be specifically remembered in prayer.

The pastor of a congregation does more than lead worship and preach on Sunday morning. A pastor is concerned with the lives of people and, unfortunately, the pastor is often times the last to know about major events in people’s lives because people forget to tell them. Whenever you need the pastor’s help or care…don’t hesitate to call, stop by or leave a note.

PASTOR’S PAGE Living Each Day as a Steward!

C.S. Lewis said, “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.’” As we grow to share the mind of Christ, our desire is to live each day as stewards who earnestly pray, “Thy will be done.” We are devoted to using all that we are and all that we have for God’s purposes. We live as God’s stewards each and every day. On the weekends of October 7/8, October 14/15, and October 21/22 the theme of our worship services and our Bible studies will be living each day as a steward. We will learn how the Holy Spirit, working through Word and Sacrament, transforms us to become more like our Chief Steward, , who willingly poured out his life in giving and serving. Just as Jesus faithfully served his Father by serving us, we are called to share the love we ourselves have received. “Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” 1 Peter 4:10 - NRSV As your pastor, I pray that each of you will take advantage of these opportunities to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ, that you might be strengthened in faith to live boldly and generously in love for others and the world God has made.

The three weekly themes are as follows:

October 7/8 “The Steward’s Identity” October 14/15 “The Steward’s Purpose” October 21/22 “The Steward’s Lifestyle” (Commitment Sunday)

Additionally, at 9:15 on October 8, the Stewardship Ministry Team will host a Ministry Team Fair. Please come and see how God is at work through the ministry teams here at Trinity! May God grant us strength and wisdom to become a community of faithful stewards of the gospel!

Pr. Michael Mueller, Interim Pastor

President’s Report

During this time when Mother Nature seems to be so angry at us at the moment and the devastation is incomprehensible to most of us, sometimes it becomes hard for us to find any type of peace in the world around us. We as believers in Jesus can have peace when there is uncertainty because we know that we are all his children and he loves & cares for all our needs. If we bring all our needs and concerns to him with thankfulness, our peace will come from the confidence that the Lord loves us and he is in control. He will provide us the comfort that settle our nerves, fills our minds with hope, and allows us reassurance even in the midst of devastation. Let us all keep those affected by all of the recent events in our thoughts & prayers that they may know that there are brighter tomorrows.

God’s Blessings!

—Ilan Shamir Adult Bible Study Opportunities in October Thursdays The Thursday morning Bible Study will meet this month on October 5, 12, and 26. We gather at 10:30 AM on Thursdays to explore the Gospel reading for the coming Sunday.

The first two weeks of our study this month will focus on stewardship themes, and the final week will be all about the Reformation. These are the readings:  Oct 5 – Matthew 21:33-46  Oct 12 – Matthew 22:1-14  Oct 26 – John 8:31-36

Pr. Mueller will again take part in a regularly scheduled meeting for Interim Pastors in the Greater Milwaukee Synod on the third Thursday, Oct 19, so we will not meet for Bible Study that week.

Sundays During September, the group that gathers during the Education Hour on Sundays began exploring questions related to Trinity’s transition to a new pastor. We used a psalm text to consider the experience of “wandering in the wilderness.” A healing story from John’s Gospel invited reflection on the different perspectives of insiders and outsiders, as well as ways that we may feel paralyzed and unable to move forward. The discussions have been insightful and have provided a safe space to name the feelings, challenges, and desires that are alive during this interim period.

The central questions we will continue to explore include: who are we? (identity), where are we? (context), and why are we here? (purpose). The October focus on stewardship (Oct 8 and 15) and the Reformation (Oct 29) will provide a framework for asking these questions.

All are encouraged to participate in one or both of these weekly opportunities to grow in relationship and stretch our faith and understanding. Praying with Scripture Often what we receive in weekly worship is related to what we bring to it. Dwelling in the word throughout the week can nurture a deeper level of attention and awareness when we arrive for worship on Saturday or Sunday. Praying with the scriptures opens up space for the Spirit to teach us, revealing new levels of truth that we couldn’t perceive before. Here is a simple method, which can be done individually or with others in your family or a group. If you are listening to a text together with others, first allow some time for silent reflection at each step, then invite each person who wishes to share their response. Choose a short passage. Take a few slow breaths and center your attention, then read the passage through slowly. Notice what word or image draws your attention. Listen to that. Next, read the passage again slowly. How does it speak to your own life? If it’s a story, which character do you most relate to? How does this word connect with your experience in the world? Chew on it. When you are ready, read the passage one more time. Ask yourself what God is inviting in you. Do you hear a call to action? Is God inviting a change? Is this a chance to simply rest in God’s promise? Speak to God about it, wrestle with it or give thanks. Finally, allow yourself a few minutes to sit in stillness. Simply rest in God’s presence. Then return to your day! Here are the assigned readings for the weekends in October. You may wish to start with these:

From The Desk Of The MET Team

Greetings and blessings to all members of the Congregation! We as members of the MET team are looking forward to defining the direction our congregation will take over the next 7 years. We've already been conducting a survey to define Who We Are. In addition to this survey, we've been looking into our church's history and plan to find out more about what people outside the church think of Trinity in order to further discover who we are. Lastly, we have studied how our church communicates, so we can better communicate our mission statement and goals to the congregation and the community. Looking forward, we plan to focus on answering the question Where Are We? (as a congregation.) We hopefully will talk to the congregation on this topic soon. Until then, God Bless!

Christian Symbol Cornerstone

A cornerstone harkens back to God’s pronouncement in Isaiah 28:16 that he “has laid as a foundation in Zion … a precious cornerstone.” Ephesians 2:20 declares that Jesus is the cornerstone of the household of God. The letters IHC and XP are abbreviations for “Jesus” and “Christ” in ancient Greek.

FINANCE MINISTRY TEAM August was a good month after having a fantastic July. Once again, we had a positive summer month – that makes two in a row! We had net income $553; YTD is now $2,890. We did have other income from sale of two cemetery plots that helped us remain positive. Also, Adopt a Bill income of $665; total is now $2,210. This is a great help especially during our summer months.

August Financial Summary Report August Budget Summation Month of August 2017 Total for Year Income 25,799.06 203,351.61 Expenses (25,246.06) (200,461.03) Net Income (loss) 553.00 2,890.58

Small Building Improvement Fund  Balance of $4,653  Paid $875 to clean the bathroom floors

Simply Giving; automatic electronic gifting that really helps keep our income flow steady. Sign up sheets are available in the narthex

“Did you know” series  We packed over 11,000 meals (almost 2,000 bags) on GWOH Sunday in about two hours  That equates to 54 boxes of meals that will help feed people in Haiti and El Salvador  We had over 60 congregants, families, and friends of Trinity working 6 “production” lines  Thanks to so many for making this such a huge success each time we do it. And thanks to Congregational Life Ministry Team for providing lunch and kitchen help Also, “did you know”: Each year, 3rd graders are provided a bible. Currently most families pay for these (about $25). We would like to start a reserve fund so no families have to pay. If you are interested in donating to this fund, please use your Blue Envelopes and state “Bible Fund”.

Thank you for your attention/actions to our ever fluctuating financial situation.

As always, thanks to all of you for your generous gifting to all our ministries!

Women of the Reformation Although the names most often associated with the Reformation are male, women also played key roles in maintaining the integrity of the church. “Most were wives and mothers,” professor Justin Holcomb writes. “Some were also authors, apologists, ex-nuns and queens. All were faithful servants of Jesus.” Women who made notable contributions include: • Katherine von Bora, the former nun who married former-priest Martin Luther • Argula von Grumbach, a Bavarian noblewoman who published letters and debated with university faculty • Olympia Fulvia Morata, an Italian scholar who lectured on the teachings of Luther and Calvin — and was persecuted and imprisoned • Jeanne d’Albret, queen of Navarre and a leader in France’s Huguenot movement, who tried to peacefully resolve tensions between Catholics and Protestants • Marie Dentière, an aristocrat who left an Augustinian monastery to speak in public — even on street corners! — about church reform

Cross Generational Team Update The TLC Cross Generational Ministry team has been busy planning events and fund raisers this past quarter, and we would like to make everyone aware of what is planned for the upcoming 6 months. Please feel free to reach out to Matt Fritz, Gail or Jim English, Austin Keller, or Tina or George Krenzer if you would like to learn more about our team and our goals for 2017/2018. Key Activities for 2017 The primary focus from now until June 2018 is to encourage high school teens to sign up for the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, and to provide support and resources through a variety of fund-raising activities that will reduce the cost and burden to families for their children to attend this faith building event. Please Note: If there is a concern about your ability to financially support your teen being able to go to Houston, please speak to Gail English. We do not want anyone to not attend due to financial concerns. There will be many opportunities to ‘earn’ money to significantly defray the cost of this trip. We are hoping that all of the events noted below will not only help our teens, but also encourage members of all ages to interact and build strong relationships, including: 1. South Milwaukee Downtown Market – A booth has been rented for 9/21, 9/28 and 10/5 that will contain a fishing game for younger children, prizes and candy. The goal of this event is to raise awareness of TLC and to give kids a safe activity at the downtown market. Teens going to Houston will earn ‘credits’ for every 2 hours they volunteer at the market. 2. Flamingo Flocking – For a small donation, we will send a flock of pink flamingos to adorn the lawn of your nearest and dearest (?) friends and families. Flock repellent “insurance” is also available to those not wanting the flock on their property. Teens going to Houston will earn ‘credits’ for every home they ‘flock’ and ‘unflock’. 3. Scrip Program – The TLC scrip gift card program is running a promotion for September and October. For every $50 in scrip cards that you purchase, you will get a chance to win a $25 gift card of your choice (over 5,000 to choose from). The goal is to earn $2,000 this year in ‘profits’ which will be used to defray the cost of the trip for all teens. 4. Apple Pie Sale – We will be selling ‘made from scratch’ apple pies in November, just in time for Thanksgiving. The teens that help with making these pies (with adult supervision and quality control) will earn ‘credits’ to defray the cost of the trip. 5. Marcus Theatre Tickets – In November and December our youth will be selling $10 Marcus Theatre Tickets to friends, family, and church members, with each teen earning money based on the number of tickets they sell. 6. Serving Dinner at UCC Church on 12/21 – TLC will be providing and serving a free community meal at the UCC church in South Milwaukee. Teens who volunteer to help at this dinner will earn ‘credits’ based on the number of hours they work. As you can see, we have a lot of activities planned that are geared to help the High Schoolers who will be going to Houston, and we appreciate all of the support that we have gotten from our church members. Please make sure to encourage them with your prayers, words of support, and support of these key fundraisers.

Even if you have not registered, it is not too late to enroll in any of our 3 year old to 12th grade classes. Either call the Church Office (762-6626) or stop in and talk to Kari before the 9:15 AM Education hour. Sunday School classes are held from Rally Day until May 20, 2017, the Sunday before Memorial Day.

New Teachers Again, we have a good core group of Sunday School teachers returning this year, but we are also pleased to welcome newcomers to our teaching and helper staff. Cary Fischer rejoins our teaching staff as a team teacher for the 6th/7th grade class, Tori Fischer is a new team teacher in the 4th grade class, Sarah Brooks is a team teacher in our 2nd grade class, and Erin Ugowski rejoins as a helper in the 3 year old class, If you are a parent, please stop by and welcome them to our educator group. If you are able to fill in, please contact Kari Bruins at [email protected] or Ray Bergwin at 764-1765.

Substitutes Although we presently do not have a full Sunday School teaching staff, we are always looking to increase our complement of Substitute Sunday School teachers and helpers. This only requires a commitment to be available occasionally when a teacher or helper is unavailable on a given Sunday. If you would like more information or would like to join our group, please call Ray Bergwin (764-1765) or email Kari Bruins at [email protected].

Confirmation Classes Confirmation classes started again this year on Monday, September 12th from 6:30 – 8:00 PM for those in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades with the goal of confirming their faith in the 9th grade. Catechism consists of two weeks of class time and one week of service/fellowship each month. In addition, participants are required to attend a minimum of 50% of Sunday School classes for their grade.

Adult Bible Study Two opportunities are again available for adults to gather and learn more about the Bible and our faith. Beginning Thursday, September 14th from 10:30-11:30 AM, the first group meets with group discussion centered on the coming Sunday's Gospel. Consult the Tidings for the verses covered. The second opportunity is the Adult Forum that meets during the 9:15 AM Sunday Education Hour beginning September 17th. Please note the Sunday Adult Forum continues to meet in Room 118 in the southeast corner of the education wing.

Rally Day-“God’s Work Our Hands” Help A big thank you goes out to all of our Sunday School kids who participated in our of the meal packing project on Sunday. September 10th. Your efforts were very much appreciated.

Ray Bergwin and Kari Bruins

STEWARDSHIP: SM RECYCLING/YOUTH FUND: South Milwaukee Recycling, 1200 Minnesota Ave. (762-1700) will take your aluminum cans and other metal and send a check to our Youth Fund. All you need do is tell the worker that you would like your “earnings” to be donated to the Trinity Lutheran Youth Fund and they will do the rest.

TENT RENTAL: Trinity Lutheran owns a 20’ x 30’ tent that is available for rental for $75.00. Be sure to keep this in mind for your next family gathering! Check with the office to reserve a date.

2017 WORLD HUNGER EFFORT Trinity’s 2017 program is the first one we’ve done that takes on a healthcare emphasis. Clinic visits are critical when a child is sick, and regular check-ups are important to look for symptoms of malnutrition and other preventable diseases. When kids are healthy, they’re more likely to succeed in school and get ahead. “Check-ups for Children” will focus on providing clinic visits for children in poor areas as well as areas where medical facilities are too far away to make them easily accessible. Clinic visits for a child average about $10. A $5 donation every month for the next year will provide healthcare for 6 children. This program is run by the ELCA’s World Hunger office. Because our offerings support the World Hunger office, all of the funds donated go to the program to provide children with healthcare.

SOUTHSHORE REGIONAL INTERFAITH…: Volunteers are needed to help older adults so they can remain independent and continue to live in their homes or apartments. The following are some ways you can help: • Drive an older adult to a medical appointment • Help with grocery shopping or errands • Take to hair appointments, bank and post office • Visit someone who is homebound • Do a minor home repair • Assist with fund raising events • Lend a hand with yard work (or snow removal in winter) Volunteering is on a “flexible” (when you’re available) basis. There are no set hours or set times (unless you want them). We work around your schedule. For more information or to sign up, please call 762-1998, or stop in the office. Information is also available outside the Interfaith office.
