JOURNEY THROUGH HOLY WEEK Sunday, March 28

2-4pm in the Church Join us on Palm Sunday, for A Journey through Holy Week. This event is meant to celebrate, focus on, and teach the events of the apex of the . This meaningful and enjoyable self paced program will have many activities and reflections to help us enter into this amazing week. Families and parishioners of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come! Start Holy week by giving yourself time to spend with . May it be a time set apart to unclutter your mind, lay down your burdens, and renew your faith in Jesus. From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

As we begin Holy Week, the following ceremonies are taking place here at St. Joseph Parish to commemorate the events leading up to the and the celebration of Easter. This year, things might look a little different then they have in the past, but we have worked to ensure that the focus remains on remembering and participating in the Christ.

Palm Sunday Holy Week begins with the Palm Sunday liturgy, celebrating Christ’s triumphant ride into Jerusalem. With the reading of the Passion, the liturgy foreshadows the events of Good Friday, and we try to reflect this musically, with the lessening of instruments until we finally exit in silence. Palms will be distributed as you enter the church. We will also have a Faith! Family! Fun! program from 2-4pm on Palm Sunday called “A Journey through Holy Week.” This event is meant to celebrate and focus on the events of the Holy week in a self paced program, full of reflections and activities. This event is child-friendly. Families and parishioners of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come!

Tenebrae Wednesday evening is the Tenebrae ceremony, the public singing of the Liturgy of the Hours, centered around the Passion and Death of Christ. All of the candles and lights are brightly lit to begin the service. During the course of the ceremony, all the candles and lights are slowly extinguished. The gradual darkening of the Church gives Tenebrae its particular tone as the complementary vigil to Holy Saturday. During the Easter Vigil the Christ candle sets everything alight; at Tenebrae there is gradual darkness and silence, until only the Christ candle remains. The Christ candle is carried out by the celebrant and the Streptis (loud banging) is heard. The banging signifies the people asking for the candle to return. After the candle returns, the people leave in silence. This ceremony is full of symbolism which can be easily explained to children as they love to participate in the banging at the end as well. This year, we will have individual LED Candles available for use.

Easter Triduum The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum, starting the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery. What really do the liturgies of the Triduum celebrate? Most of us believe we know the answer. We assume that Thursday commemorates the day Jesus instituted the Eucharist; Friday commemorates the day He was executed on the cross; and the vigil commemorates His emergence from the tomb. We assume, further, that the liturgies are dramatic “reenactments” of events, by turns touching, tragic and triumphant, which happened during Jesus’ last days and culminated in His victory over death. Precisely because these faith-anchoring events are historical, however, they cannot be repeated or “reenacted”. That is why the Church’s long tradition insists that what happened once in history passes over into the mystery of the assembly’s liturgical/sacramental celebrations. What the actually celebrates is mystery not history. They celebrate not what once happened to Jesus but what is happening among us as a people called to conversion, gathered in faith, and gifted with holiness.

This year, there are a few changes to the Easter Triduum. We will not be celebrating the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, nor will we have the of the Transfer of the Blessed Sacrament. The Holy See has granted special permission to reserve the Eucharist in the Tabernacle. Therefore, there is no Adoration after Holy Thursday Mass, as we have normally had in the past. On Good Friday, the procession for the Veneration of the Holy Cross will be omitted. Instead, the Cross will be available for Friday adoration and veneration after the Liturgy until 7PM. LED Candles will again be used for the Easter Vigil. Pastor’s Desk continued...

Everyone is welcome to attend our Food Blessing on Saturday, April 3 at 11am. There is still time to RSVP for the Hunt & Open House at School on April 3 from 11:30-1:30pm. Please see the bulletin ad on page 2 for more information.

I hope everyone will prayerfully consider attending one or all of these ceremonies as concludes.

Finally, a special thank you to our 8th graders who did an admirable presentation of the Stations of the Cross for the whole school in the Gym and then for our parishioners in Church last Friday. Pictures from the service are below.

God’s Blessings, Fr. Jared Orndorff, Pastor Principal’s Post

We thank you for your prayers for our 8th graders throughout this year and especially over the past month as they discerned where to apply for high school. We are pleased to announce these acceptances: Archbishop Hoban - Grace Freiman, Addison Hirsch, Riley Jones, and Madelyn McAninch; St. Vincent-St. Mary - Emma Ariyajasingam, Jaden Meredith, John Myers, Grace O’Dell, James Olds, Andrew Podlogar, and Ivan Spangler; Walsh Jesuit - Natalie Anderson, Joy Chen, Owen Fedak, Madelyn Herbele, Soren Horak, Ryan Kelly, Logan Lenheer, Connor Maxwell, Elena Rizzo, Madison Serdinak, Amaya Siders, and Hayden Tanner; Cuyahoga Falls High School - Grace Whitestine; Firestone High School - Cecelia Bailey; Stow High School - Noah Kowalik; and Tallmadge High School - Kara Marino. We ask for these students to remain in your prayers throughout the rest of their 8th grade year as we look towards their graduation from St. Joseph Parish School in May.

For those of you that may not have heard, our school is buzzing with X-STREAM learning at all our grade levels, and for those that may not recall, the “STREAM” portion of that name stands for the subjects of Science-Technology-Religion-Engineering-Arts-Math integrated into hands-on, meaningful, authentic lessons.

Through our partnership with Kent State University, Matt Campana, founder of Hands of Gratitude, brought his passion for doing good and his program to our students. The Middle School students participated in Hands of Gratitude to assemble 3D printed prosthetic hands. The presentation detailing the need behind this project was livestreamed school-wide. The completed devices will

be distributed to recipients in Honduras.

The power of empathy combined with our own students’ need and passion for doing good was clearly evident in our CSW Penny War. Open Arms Adoption was this year’s charitable recipient, and the Penny War was the only venue for raising funds. The students generously donate as many pennies as they can find for their own class’ jar, but there was an unusually high amount of participation in SABOTAGE DAY when any silver coins, bills, and yes, this year, even checks accumulated in a class’ jar which counts against them towards being the champs. We raised the greatest amount of funds yet in our years of the Penny War with a whopping $1,300! Our overall first time winner with positive funds $ 9.96 was Mrs. Rizzo’s 3rd grade! Not to surprise anyone, Mrs. Rhonda Wilson’s 7th grade came in as a 2-time champ raising the most amount of pennies with $86.54. This was certainly a “FALCON-tastic” venture whose success couldn’t have happened without yoU!

We are looking forward to meeting new families at our Faith! Family! Fun! on March 28; our Easter Egg Hunt Open House on April 3; and at one of our Falcon Spring Flings on April 27, May 5, and May 13. Be sure to refer often to our website https://www.saintjoe.org/school for the most up to date information as new school registration for the ‘21-22 year is open!
