Member Motion City Council Notice of Motion MM20.32 ACTION Ward:All Looking for a Place to Happen: Finding a City Facility to Broadcast the Final Tragically Hip Concert - by Councillor Mike Layton, seconded by Councillor Joe Cressy * Notice of this Motion has been given. * This Motion is subject to referral to the Economic Development Committee. A two-thirds vote is required to waive referral. Recommendations Councillor Mike Layton, seconded by Councillor Joe Cressy, recommends that: 1. City Council authorize the General Manager, Economic Development and Culture, in consultation with the General Manager, Parks, Forestry and Recreation and impacted local City Councillors, to explore options to broadcast the final Tragically Hip concert in a City of Toronto square, theatre or a park, including the authority to assign necessary funds from their existing operating budget or through identification of a sponsor for all or part of the cost. Summary One of Canada's most beloved bands will be soon be starting their final tour across Canada. For over 30 years, the Tragically Hip have rocked shows across Canada and around the world. With 13 studio albums, one live album and 54 singles, the Tragically Hip have been part our shared Canadian soundtrack for generations. The Hip frequently use Canadian heritage and geography in their music, something celebrated by communities across Canada. This can be heard in their song, "Fifty Mission Cap", a tribute to Toronto Maple Leafs' defenseman Bill Barilko who, shortly after scoring the goal that won the Leafs the 1951 Stanley Cup, went missing on a fishing trip having perished in a plane crash only to be found a decade later. As a last gift to their fans, despite the personal and physical toll it will have, the Hip will share a final concert tour with Canada. CBC has since announced that they will be broadcasting their final performance live from Kingston. We, as the City, should create a shared space for Toronto Hip fans to join together to watch this historic concert live. Background Information (City Council) Member Motion MM20.32.

INTRODUCTION An Educational Experience In many countries, hockey is just a game, but to Canadians it’s a thread woven into the very fabric of our society. The Hockey Hall of Fame is a museum where participants and builders of the sport are honoured and the history of hockey is preserved. Through the Education Program, students can share in the glory of great moments on the ice that are now part of our Canadian culture. The Hockey Hall of Fame has used components of the sport to support educational core curriculum. The goal of this program is to provide an arena in which students can utilize critical thinking skills and experience hands-on interactive opportunities that will assure a successful and worthwhile field trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Nicknames and the Lexicon of Sports
NICKNAMES AND THE LEXICON OF SPORTS ROBERT KENNEDY TANIA ZAMUNER University of California, Santa Barbara Radboud University Nijmegen abstract: This article examines the structure and usage of nicknames given to professional hockey and baseball players. Two general types are observed: a phrasal referring expression and a single-word hypocoristic. The phrasal nickname is descrip- tive but is only used referentially, usually in sports narrative. The hypocoristic is used for both reference and address and may be descriptive or shortened from a formal name. In addition, its inclusion of a hypocoristic sufﬁx is sensitive to the segmental content of the shortened form. A model of nickname assignment is proposed in which the creation of any kind of nickname is treated as enriching the lexicon. This model relates nicknames to other types of specialized or elaborate referring expres- sions and encodes the social meaning of nicknames and other informal names in the lexicon. The tradition of assigning nicknames to athletes is typical of all sports and is notably vibrant in baseball and hockey. Indeed, nicknaming practices are prevalent in many cultures and subcultures, carrying a wide range of social and semantic functions, and are often derived with specialized phonological structures. In this article, we study the athlete nickname as both a cultural and a linguistic phenomenon, focusing both on its function as a potential form of address and reference and on its form as a descriptive or shortened label. Like nicknames discussed in the studies surveyed in section 1 below, athlete nicknames carry social meaning about their referents; in many cases, they are also constrained in their phonological structure.

REAL ROCK: AUTHENTICITY AND POPULAR MUSIC IN CANADA, 1984-1994 PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2018 © PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD, 2018 Abstract This dissertation investigates the production and reception of English-Canadian rock music sound recordings, from 1984 to 1994, in relation to mutually constitutive understandings of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, age, and place. It examines how different forms of domestic Anglo rock served to reinforce or subvert the dominant ideologies undergirding the social order in Canada during the late twentieth century. This study analyzes a multifaceted discourse about authenticity that illustrates the ways in which a host of people – including musicians, music journalists, record label representatives and other professionals from across the music industries, government administrators, and consumers – categorized recorded sound, defined bodily norms, negotiated commerce and technology, and evaluated collective communication in Canada. This study finds that the principle of originality fundamentally structured the categorization of sound recordings in Canada. Originality, according to rock culture, encompassed the balancing of traditionalism with innovation. This dissertation determines that Whiteness organized English-Canadian rock culture in terms of its corporeal standards. White bodies functioned as the norm against which racialized Others were compared and measured. This study also shows how the concept of autonomy encouraged the proper negotiation of commerce and technology in an increasingly neoliberal political and economic condition. Independence of will fostered acceptable behaviour. Finally, this dissertation reveals that the rock status of a given concert rested upon the actions of the performers as well as the composition and reactions of ticket holders in the audience.
