Rural Urban Divide One of Many Reasons to Give to NU Board of Regents Friend of Agriculture

The purpose of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation Political Action Committee (NEFB-PAC) is to support candidates for state and national public office who understand the needs of agriculture and rural communities. Funds from NEFB-PAC can also be used to support or oppose ballot initiatives.

Rural vs Urban Representation In 1963, 203 of our 435 U.S. Congressional Districts were classified “rural”. Today, that number is 34. And of our 49 state senators in Nebraska, fewer than 14 could be classified as “rural”. Rural residents in general, and especially farmers and ranchers, are very much a minority. We are already seeing the impact and the future holds much the same if we do not do something to change it. Rob Schafer Last year, for instance, Nebraska Farm Bureau fought off an effort to create a one-cent tax on every 10 gallons of water pumped District 5 from an irrigation well. We also found ourselves lobbying the governor to veto a bill, introduced on behalf of animal activists, which would have repealed a program to manage black-tailed prairie dogs. Misguided, reckless efforts like these threaten agriculture and the strength of our rural way of life. Pooling our limited resources through the NEFB-PAC offers us leverage to fight for a stronger, more effective presence in federal, state, and local offices.

Support Ag-Friendly Candidates Through our “Friend of Agriculture” process, your contribution to the NEFB-PAC is given to candidates who support the positions of the Nebraska Farm Bureau. The PAC relies on the input from County Farm Bureau District Evaluation Committees to determine who receives a “Friend of Agriculture” designation, and eventually, a financial contribution. But it doesn’t stop there, NEFB-PAC also partners with Nebraska Farm Bureau grassroots and communications personnel to place candidate signs, develop print material, cut The Nebraska Farm Bureau is radio ads, and assist with other types of costly, but important and effective, in-kind contributions. opposing Initiative 427, a measure to expand Medicaid in Nebraska. Though folks generally don’t enjoy talking, or even thinking, about money in politics, the reality over the next three years. is running a campaign is costly. We should never be ashamed of supporting candidates who represent our values and interests and Farm Bureau policy states: "We doing all we can to help them get elected.
